    Quantum Convolutional BCH Codes

Quantum convolutional codes can be used to protect a sequence of qubits of arbitrary length against decoherence. We introduce two new families of quantum convolutional codes. Our construction is based on an algebraic method which allows to construct classical convolutional codes from block codes, in particular BCH codes. These codes have the property that they contain their Euclidean, respectively Hermitian, dual codes. Hence, they can be used to define quantum convolutional codes by the stabilizer code construction. We compute BCH-like bounds on the free distances which can be controlled as in the case of block codes, and establish that the codes have non-catastrophic encoders.Comment: 4 pages, minor changes, accepted for publication at the 10th Canadian Workshop on Information Theory (CWIT'07

Space-time block codes provide substantial diversity advantages for multiple transmit antenna systems at a low decoding complexity. In this paper, we concatenate space-time codes with Convolutional Codes (CC), Turbo Convolutional codes (TC), Turbo BCH codes (TBCH), Trellis Coded Modulation (TCM) and Turbo Trellis Coded Modulation (TTCM) schemes for achieving a high coding gain. The associated performance and complexity of the coding schemes is compared

On the Energy Efficiency of LT Codes in Proactive Wireless Sensor Networks

This paper presents an in-depth analysis on the energy efficiency of Luby Transform (LT) codes with Frequency Shift Keying (FSK) modulation in a Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) over Rayleigh fading channels with pathloss. We describe a proactive system model according to a flexible duty-cycling mechanism utilized in practical sensor apparatus. The present analysis is based on realistic parameters including the effect of channel bandwidth used in the IEEE 802.15.4 standard, active mode duration and computation energy. A comprehensive analysis, supported by some simulation studies on the probability mass function of the LT code rate and coding gain, shows that among uncoded FSK and various classical channel coding schemes, the optimized LT coded FSK is the most energy-efficient scheme for distance d greater than the pre-determined threshold level d_T , where the optimization is performed over coding and modulation parameters. In addition, although the optimized uncoded FSK outperforms coded schemes for d < d_T , the energy gap between LT coded and uncoded FSK is negligible for d < d_T compared to the other coded schemes. These results come from the flexibility of the LT code to adjust its rate to suit instantaneous channel conditions, and suggest that LT codes are beneficial in practical low-power WSNs with dynamic position sensor nodes.Comment: accepted for publication in IEEE Transactions on Signal Processin

Downlink LTE System Performance Improvement by Using BCH Codes over LTE-MIMO Channel

Long-term Evolution (LTE) has potential feasibility to implement high-speed data transmission. This technology is essential for accommodating the rising utilization of data and voice service. Nonetheless, the main problem is the deteriorated performance of wireless communication systems following the elevation in bit error rate (BER) owing to multipath fading environments. Therefore, using channel coding is essential to reduce BER, which leads to enhancement of system performance of digital communication systems. Previous studies have reported utilization of channel codes including turbo and convolutional codes in LTE systems for attaining error control system. As such, the key challenge of selecting category of coding method is the trade-off between elevating decoding complexity and enhancing system performance. Hence, the study herein proposed Bose and Chaudhuri (BCH) codes as channel coding for downlink LTE system over MIMO channel. This is aimed to attain an adaptive error control with low complexity compared to turbo and convolutional codes. The findings indicated that BCH codes had reduced BER compared to turbo and convolutional codes in both quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK) modulation schemes and binary phase-shift keying (BPSK) with regard to the downlink LTE system performance. The suggested method had approximately 4dB coding gain at 1X10-1 against both of convolutional and turbo codes in BPSK. While, for QPSK, the proposed method had approximately 5dB and 6dB compared to turbo and convolutional codes, respectively. Nonetheless, enhanced performance of the suggested system was observed through reducing BER of the received data by adding the number of antennas in MIMO channel
