    An Improved Observation Model for Super-Resolution under Affine Motion

    Super-resolution (SR) techniques make use of subpixel shifts between frames in an image sequence to yield higher-resolution images. We propose an original observation model devoted to the case of non isometric inter-frame motion as required, for instance, in the context of airborne imaging sensors. First, we describe how the main observation models used in the SR literature deal with motion, and we explain why they are not suited for non isometric motion. Then, we propose an extension of the observation model by Elad and Feuer adapted to affine motion. This model is based on a decomposition of affine transforms into successive shear transforms, each one efficiently implemented by row-by-row or column-by-column 1-D affine transforms. We demonstrate on synthetic and real sequences that our observation model incorporated in a SR reconstruction technique leads to better results in the case of variable scale motions and it provides equivalent results in the case of isometric motions

    3D reconstruction and object recognition from 2D SONAR data

    Accurate and meaningful representations of the environment are required for autonomy in underwater applications. Thanks to favourable propagation properties in water, acoustic sensors are commonly preferred to video cameras and lasers but do not provide direct 3D information. This thesis addresses the 3D reconstruction of underwater scenes from 2D imaging SONAR data as well as the recognition of objects of interest in the reconstructed scene. We present two 3D reconstruction methods and two model-based object recognition methods. We evaluate our algorithms on multiple scenarios including data gathered by an AUV. We show the ability to reconstruct underwater environments at centimetre-level accuracy using 2D SONARs of any aperture. We demonstrate the recognition of structures of interest on a medium-sized oil-field type environment providing accurate yet low memory footprint semantic world models. We conclude that accurate 3D semantic representations of partially-structured marine environments can be obtained from commonly embedded 2D SONARs, enabling online world modelling, relocalisation and model-based applications

    Towards Predictive Rendering in Virtual Reality

    The strive for generating predictive images, i.e., images representing radiometrically correct renditions of reality, has been a longstanding problem in computer graphics. The exactness of such images is extremely important for Virtual Reality applications like Virtual Prototyping, where users need to make decisions impacting large investments based on the simulated images. Unfortunately, generation of predictive imagery is still an unsolved problem due to manifold reasons, especially if real-time restrictions apply. First, existing scenes used for rendering are not modeled accurately enough to create predictive images. Second, even with huge computational efforts existing rendering algorithms are not able to produce radiometrically correct images. Third, current display devices need to convert rendered images into some low-dimensional color space, which prohibits display of radiometrically correct images. Overcoming these limitations is the focus of current state-of-the-art research. This thesis also contributes to this task. First, it briefly introduces the necessary background and identifies the steps required for real-time predictive image generation. Then, existing techniques targeting these steps are presented and their limitations are pointed out. To solve some of the remaining problems, novel techniques are proposed. They cover various steps in the predictive image generation process, ranging from accurate scene modeling over efficient data representation to high-quality, real-time rendering. A special focus of this thesis lays on real-time generation of predictive images using bidirectional texture functions (BTFs), i.e., very accurate representations for spatially varying surface materials. The techniques proposed by this thesis enable efficient handling of BTFs by compressing the huge amount of data contained in this material representation, applying them to geometric surfaces using texture and BTF synthesis techniques, and rendering BTF covered objects in real-time. Further approaches proposed in this thesis target inclusion of real-time global illumination effects or more efficient rendering using novel level-of-detail representations for geometric objects. Finally, this thesis assesses the rendering quality achievable with BTF materials, indicating a significant increase in realism but also confirming the remainder of problems to be solved to achieve truly predictive image generation

    Curve Estimation and Signal Discrimination in Spatial Problems

    In many instances arising prominently, but not exclusively, in imaging problems, it is important to condense the salient information so as to obtain a low-dimensional approximant of the data. This thesis is concerned with two basic situations which call for such a dimension reduction. The first of these is the statistical recovery of smooth edges in regression and density surfaces. The edges are understood to be contiguous curves, although they are allowed to meander almost arbitrarily through the plane, and may even split at a finite number of points to yield an edge graph. A novel locally-parametric nonparametric method is proposed which enjoys the benefit of being relatively easy to implement via a `tracking' approach. These topics are discussed in Chapters 2 and 3, with pertaining background material being given in the Appendix. In Chapter 4 we construct concomitant confidence bands for this estimator, which have asymptotically correct coverage probability. The construction can be likened to only a few existing approaches, and may thus be considered as our main contribution. ¶ Chapter 5 discusses numerical issues pertaining to the edge and confidence band estimators of Chapters 2-4. Connections are drawn to popular topics which originated in the fields of computer vision and signal processing, and which surround edge detection. These connections are exploited so as to obtain greater robustness of the likelihood estimator, such as with the presence of sharp corners. ¶ Chapter 6 addresses a dimension reduction problem for spatial data where the ultimate objective of the analysis is the discrimination of these data into one of a few pre-specified groups. In the dimension reduction step, an instrumental role is played by the recently developed methodology of functional data analysis. Relatively standar non-linear image processing techniques, as well as wavelet shrinkage, are used prior to this step. A case study for remotely-sensed navigation radar data exemplifies the methodology of Chapter 6
