    Hybrid Multiresolution Simulation & Model Checking: Network-On-Chip Systems

    abstract: Designers employ a variety of modeling theories and methodologies to create functional models of discrete network systems. These dynamical models are evaluated using verification and validation techniques throughout incremental design stages. Models created for these systems should directly represent their growing complexity with respect to composition and heterogeneity. Similar to software engineering practices, incremental model design is required for complex system design. As a result, models at early increments are significantly simpler relative to real systems. While experimenting (verification or validation) on models at early increments are computationally less demanding, the results of these experiments are less trustworthy and less rewarding. At any increment of design, a set of tools and technique are required for controlling the complexity of models and experimentation. A complex system such as Network-on-Chip (NoC) may benefit from incremental design stages. Current design methods for NoC rely on multiple models developed using various modeling frameworks. It is useful to develop frameworks that can formalize the relationships among these models. Fine-grain models are derived using their coarse-grain counterparts. Moreover, validation and verification capability at various design stages enabled through disciplined model conversion is very beneficial. In this research, Multiresolution Modeling (MRM) is used for system level design of NoC. MRM aids in creating a family of models at different levels of scale and complexity with well-formed relationships. In addition, a variant of the Discrete Event System Specification (DEVS) formalism is proposed which supports model checking. Hierarchical models of Network-on-Chip components may be created at different resolutions while each model can be validated using discrete-event simulation and verified via state exploration. System property expressions are defined in the DEVS language and developed as Transducers which can be applied seamlessly for model checking and simulation purposes. Multiresolution Modeling with verification and validation capabilities of this framework complement one another. MRM manages the scale and complexity of models which in turn can reduces V&V time and effort and conversely the V&V helps ensure correctness of models at multiple resolutions.     dissertationOver the last decade, cyber-physical systems (CPSs) have seen significant applications in many safety-critical areas, such as autonomous automotive systems, automatic pilot avionics, wireless sensor networks, etc. A Cps uses networked embedded computers to monitor and control physical processes. The motivating example for this dissertation is the use of fault- tolerant routing protocol for a Network-on-Chip (NoC) architecture that connects electronic control units (Ecus) to regulate sensors and actuators in a vehicle. With a network allowing Ecus to communicate with each other, it is possible for them to share processing power to improve performance. In addition, networked Ecus enable flexible mapping to physical processes (e.g., sensors, actuators), which increases resilience to Ecu failures by reassigning physical processes to spare Ecus. For the on-chip routing protocol, the ability to tolerate network faults is important for hardware reconfiguration to maintain the normal operation of a system. Adding a fault-tolerance feature in a routing protocol, however, increases its design complexity, making it prone to many functional problems. Formal verification techniques are therefore needed to verify its correctness. This dissertation proposes a link-fault-tolerant, multiflit wormhole routing algorithm, and its formal modeling and verification using two different methodologies. An improvement upon the previously published fault-tolerant routing algorithm, a link-fault routing algorithm is proposed to relax the unrealistic node-fault assumptions of these algorithms, while avoiding deadlock conservatively by appropriately dropping network packets. This routing algorithm, together with its routing architecture, is then modeled in a process-algebra language LNT, and compositional verification techniques are used to verify its key functional properties. As a comparison, it is modeled using channel-level VHDL which is compiled to labeled Petri-nets (LPNs). Algorithms for a partial order reduction method on LPNs are given. An optimal result is obtained from heuristics that trace back on LPNs to find causally related enabled predecessor transitions. Key observations are made from the comparison between these two verification methodologies

    Applying Deadlock Risk Assessment in Architectural Models of Real-Time Systems

    Software Architectural Assessment is a key discipline to identify at early stages of a real-time system (RTS) synthesis the problems that may become critical in its operation. Typical mechanisms supporting concurrency, such as semaphores or monitors, usually lead to concurrency problems in execution time difficult to identify, reproduce and solve. For this reason it is crucial to understand the root causes of these problems and to provide support to identify and mitigate them at early stages of the system lifecycle. This paper aims to present the results of a research work oriented to the creation of a tool to assess deadlock risk in architectural models of a RTS. A concrete architectural style (PPOOA-UML) was used to represent PIM (Platform Independent Models) of a RTS architecture supported by the PPOOA-Visio CASE tool. A case study was used to validate the deadlock assessment tool created. In the context of one of the functions of a military transport aircraft, the auto-tuning function of the communications system was selected for the assessment of the deadlock risk. According to the results obtained some guidelines are outlined to minimize the deadlock risk of the system architecture

    Composable Models for Timing and Liveness Analysis in Distributed Real-Time Embedded Systems Middleware

    Middleware for distributed real-time embedded (DRE) systems has grown increasingly complex, to address functional and temporal requirements of diverse applications. While current approaches to modeling middleware have eased the task of assembling, deploying and configuring middleware and the applications that use it, a lower-level set of formal models is needed to uncover subtle timing and liveness hazards introduced by interference between and within distributed computations, particularly in the face of alternative middleware concurrency strategies. In this paper, we propose timed automata as a formal model of low-level middleware building blocks from which a variety different middleware configurations can be constructed. When combined with analysis techniques such as model checking, this formal model can help developers in verifying the correctness of various middleware configurations with respect to the timing and liveness constraints of each particular application

    Modeling and Analyzing Cyber-Physical Systems Using Hybrid Predicate Transition Nets

    Cyber-Physical Systems (CPSs) are software controlled physical devices that are being used everywhere from utility features in household devices to safety-critical features in cars, trains, aircraft, robots, smart healthcare devices. CPSs have complex hybrid behaviors combining discrete states and continuous states capturing physical laws. Developing reliable CPSs are extremely difficult. Formal modeling methods are especially useful for abstracting and understanding complex systems and detecting and preventing early system design problems. To ensure the dependability of formal models, various analysis techniques, including simulation and reachability analysis, have been proposed in recent decades. This thesis aims to provide a unified formal modeling and analysis methodology for studying CPSs. Firstly, this thesis contributes to the modeling and analysis of discrete, continuous, and hybrid systems. This work enhances modeling of discrete systems using predicate transition nets (PrTNs) by fully realizing the underlying specification through incorporating the first-order logic with set theory, improving the type system, and providing incremental model composition. This work enhances the technique of analyzing discrete systems using PrTN by improving the simulation algorithm and its efficient implementation. This work also improves the analysis of discrete systems using SPIN by providing a more accurate and complete translation method. Secondly, this work contributes to the modeling and analysis of hybrid systems by proposing an extension of PrTNs, hybrid predicate transition nets (HPrTNs). The proposed method incorporates a novel concept of token evolution, which nicely addresses the continuous state evolution and the conflicts present in other related works. This work presents a powerful simulation capability that can handle linear, non-linear dynamics, transcendental functions through differential equations. This work also provides a complementary technique for reachability analysis through the translation of HPrTN models for analysis using SpaceEx

    Context Aware Model-Checking for Embedded Software

    Reactive systems are becoming extremely complex with the huge increase in high technologies. Despite technical improvements, the increasing size of the systems makes the introduction of a wide range of potential errors easier. Among reactive systems, the asynchronous systems communicating by exchanging messages via buffer queues are often characterized by a vast number of possible behaviors. To cope with this difficulty, manufacturers of industrial systems make significant efforts in testing and simulation to successfully pass the certification process. Nevertheless revealing errors and bugs in this huge number of behaviors remains a very difficult activity. An alternative method is to adopt formal methods, and to use exhaustive and automatic verification tools such as model-checkers. Model-checking algorithms can be used to verify requirements of a model formally and automatically. Several model checkers as (Berthomieu et al., 2004; Holzmann, 1997; Larsen et al., 1997), have been developed to help the verification of concurrent asynchronous systems. It is well known that an important issue that limits the application of model checking techniques in industrial software projects is the combinatorial explosion problem (Clarke et al., 1986; Holzmann & Peled, 1994; Park & Kwon, 2006). Because of the internal complexity of developed software, model checking of requirements over the system behavioral models could lead to an unmanageable state space. The approach described in this chapter presents an exploratory work to provide solutions to the problems mentioned above. It is based on two joint ideas: first, to reduce behaviors system to be validated during model-checking and secondly, help the user to specify the formal properties to check. For this, we propose to specify the behavior of the entities that compose the system environment. These entities interact with the system. Their behaviors are described by use cases (scenarios) called here contexts. They describe how the environment interacts with the system. Each context corresponds to an operational phase identified as system initialization, reconfiguration, graceful degradation, etc.. In addition, each context is associated with a set of properties to check. The aim is to guide the model-checker to focus on a restriction of the system behavior for verification of specific properties instead on exploring the global system automaton
