    The potential of additive manufacturing in the smart factory industrial 4.0: A review

    Additive manufacturing (AM) or three-dimensional (3D) printing has introduced a novel production method in design, manufacturing, and distribution to end-users. This technology has provided great freedom in design for creating complex components, highly customizable products, and efficient waste minimization. The last industrial revolution, namely industry 4.0, employs the integration of smart manufacturing systems and developed information technologies. Accordingly, AM plays a principal role in industry 4.0 thanks to numerous benefits, such as time and material saving, rapid prototyping, high efficiency, and decentralized production methods. This review paper is to organize a comprehensive study on AM technology and present the latest achievements and industrial applications. Besides that, this paper investigates the sustainability dimensions of the AM process and the added values in economic, social, and environment sections. Finally, the paper concludes by pointing out the future trend of AM in technology, applications, and materials aspects that have the potential to come up with new ideas for the future of AM explorations

    Aspects of the present disclosure are generally directed to a custom three-dimensional (3D) printer system that allows for the offloading of timing sensitive operations for performance by a microcontroller. In particular, the present disclosure is directed to a 3D printer system that can include multiple classes of processors that are used to perform operations associated with three-dimensional (3D) printing, thereby showcasing a heterogeneous computing system which uses two classes of processor to collaborate to solve a complex problem.     The diffusion of disruptive technologies

    We identify novel technologies using textual analysis of patents, job postings, and earnings calls. Our approach enables us to identify and document the diffusion of 29 disruptive technologies across firms and labor markets in the U.S. Five stylized facts emerge from our data. First, the locations where technologies are developed that later disrupt businesses are geographically highly concentrated, even more so than overall patenting. Second, as the technologies mature and the number of new jobs related to them grows, they gradually spread across space. While initial hiring is concentrated in high-skilled jobs, over time the mean skill level in new positions associated with the technologies declines, broadening the types of jobs that adopt a given technology. At the same time, the geographic diffusion of low-skilled positions is significantly faster than higher-skilled ones, so that the locations where initial discoveries were made retain their leading positions among high-paying positions for decades. Finally, these technology hubs are more likely to arise in areas with universities and high skilled labor pools

    Autonomous Quadrotor Navigation and Guidance

    This project involves the design of a vision-based navigation and guidance system for a quadrotor unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), to enable the UAV to follow a planned route specified by navigational markers, such as brightly colored squares, on the ground. A commercially available UAV is modified by attaching a camera and an embedded computer called Raspberry Pi. An image processing algorithm is designed using the open-source software library OpenCV to capture streaming video data from the camera and recognize the navigational markers. A guidance algorithm, also executed by the Raspberry Pi, is designed to command with the UAV autopilot to move from the currently recognized marker to the next marker. Laboratory bench tests and flight tests are performed to validate the designs

The IoT influencerepresents new development and deployment challenges in different areassuch as seamless platform integration, context based cognitive network integration,new mobile sensor/actuator network paradigms, things identification(addressing, naming in IoT) and dynamic things discoverability and manyothers. The IoRT represents new convergence challenges and their need to be addressed, in one side the programmability and the communication ofmultiple heterogeneous mobile/autonomous/robotic things for cooperating,their coordination, configuration, exchange of information, security, safetyand protection. Developments in IoT heterogeneous parallel processing/communication and dynamic systems based on parallelism and concurrencyrequire new ideas for integrating the intelligent “devices”, collaborativerobots (COBOTS), into IoT applications.
