Autonomous navigation system
An inertial navigation system utilizing a servo-controlled two degree of freedom pendulum to obtain specific force components in the locally level coordinate system is described. The pendulum includes a leveling gyroscope and an azimuth gyroscope supported on a two gimbal system. The specific force components in the locally level coordinate system are converted to components in the geographical coordinate system by means of a single Euler transformation. The standard navigation equations are solved to determine longitudinal and lateral velocities. Finally, vehicle position is determined by a further integration

The robot can rely on its eyes (the camera mounted on thc top of the robot) and control its wheels to walk through the sub-basement hallways of Caltech Moore Lab building. Efficient Autonomous Navigation for Planetary Rovers with Limited Resources
Rovers operating on Mars are in need of more and more autonomous features to ful ll their
challenging mission requirements. However, the inherent constraints of space systems make
the implementation of complex algorithms an expensive and difficult task. In this paper
we propose a control architecture for autonomous navigation. Efficient implementations of
autonomous features are built on top of the current ExoMars navigation method, enhancing
the safety and traversing capabilities of the rover. These features allow the rover to detect
and avoid hazards and perform long traverses by following a roughly safe path planned by
operators on ground. The control architecture implementing the proposed navigation mode
has been tested during a field test campaign on a planetary analogue terrain. The experiments
evaluated the proposed approach, autonomously completing two long traverses while
avoiding hazards. The approach only relies on the optical Localization Cameras stereobench,
a sensor that is found in all rovers launched so far, and potentially allows for computationally
inexpensive long-range autonomous navigation in terrains of medium difficulty
From Monocular SLAM to Autonomous Drone Exploration
Micro aerial vehicles (MAVs) are strongly limited in their payload and power
capacity. In order to implement autonomous navigation, algorithms are therefore
desirable that use sensory equipment that is as small, low-weight, and
low-power consuming as possible. In this paper, we propose a method for
autonomous MAV navigation and exploration using a low-cost consumer-grade
quadrocopter equipped with a monocular camera. Our vision-based navigation
system builds on LSD-SLAM which estimates the MAV trajectory and a semi-dense
reconstruction of the environment in real-time. Since LSD-SLAM only determines
depth at high gradient pixels, texture-less areas are not directly observed so
that previous exploration methods that assume dense map information cannot
directly be applied. We propose an obstacle mapping and exploration approach
that takes the properties of our semi-dense monocular SLAM system into account.
In experiments, we demonstrate our vision-based autonomous navigation and
exploration system with a Parrot Bebop MAV
Autonomous Spacecraft Navigation With Pulsars
An external reference system suitable for deep space navigation can be
defined by fast spinning and strongly magnetized neutron stars, called pulsars.
Their beamed periodic signals have timing stabilities comparable to atomic
clocks and provide characteristic temporal signatures that can be used as
natural navigation beacons, quite similar to the use of GPS satellites for
navigation on Earth. By comparing pulse arrival times measured on-board a
spacecraft with predicted pulse arrivals at a reference location, the
spacecraft position can be determined autonomously and with high accuracy
everywhere in the solar system and beyond. The unique properties of pulsars
make clear already today that such a navigation system will have its
application in future astronautics. In this paper we describe the basic
principle of spacecraft navigation using pulsars and report on the current

Design of a biologically inspired navigation system for the Psikharpax rodent robot
This work presents the development and implementation of a biologically inspired navigation system on the autonomous Psikharpax rodent robot. Our system comprises two independent navigation strategies: a taxon expert and a planning expert. The presented navigation system allows the robot to learn the optimal strategy in each situation, by relying upon a strategy selection mechanism
Autonomous navigation in interaction-based environments - a case of non-signalised roundabouts
To reduce the number of collision fatalities at crossroads intersections many countries have started replacing intersections with non-signalised roundabouts, forcing the drivers to be more situationally aware and to adapt their behaviours according to the scenario. A non-signalised roundabout adds to the autonomous vehicle planning challenge, as navigating such interaction dependent scenarios safely, efficiently and comfortably has been a challenge even for human drivers. Unlike traffic signal controlled roundabouts where the merging order is centrally controlled, driving a non-signalised roundabout requires the individual actor to make the decision to merge based on the movement of other interacting actors. Most traditional autonomous planning approaches use rule-based speed assignment for generating admissible motion trajectories, which work successfully in non-interaction-based driving scenarios. They, however, are less effective in interaction-based scenarios as they lack the necessary ability to adapt the vehicle's motion according to the evolving driving scenario. In this paper, we demonstrate an Adaptive Tactical Behaviour Planner (ATBP) for an autonomous vehicle that is capable of planning human-like motion behaviours for navigating a non-signalised roundabout, combining naturalistic behaviour planning and tactical decision-making algorithm.
