Design and implementation of a real-time autonomous navigation system applied to lego robots
Teaching theoretical concepts of a real-time autonomous robot system may be a challenging task without real hardware support. The paper discusses the application of the Lego Robot for teaching multi interdisciplinary subjects to Mechatronics students. A real-time mobile robot system with perception using sensors, path planning algorithm, PID controller is used as the case to demonstrate the teaching methodology. The novelties are introduced compared to classical robotic classes: (i) the adoption of a project-based learning approach as teaching methodology; (ii) an effective real-time autonomous navigation approach for the mobile robot. However, the extendibility and applicability of the presented approach are not limited to only the educational purpose
Challenges and solutions for autonomous ground robot scene understanding and navigation in unstructured outdoor environments: A review
The capabilities of autonomous mobile robotic systems have been steadily improving due to recent advancements in computer science, engineering, and related disciplines such as cognitive science. In controlled environments, robots have achieved relatively high levels of autonomy. In more unstructured environments, however, the development of fully autonomous mobile robots remains challenging due to the complexity of understanding these environments. Many autonomous mobile robots use classical, learning-based or hybrid approaches for navigation. More recent learning-based methods may replace the complete navigation pipeline or selected stages of the classical approach. For effective deployment, autonomous robots must understand their external environments at a sophisticated level according to their intended applications. Therefore, in addition to robot perception, scene analysis and higher-level scene understanding (e.g., traversable/non-traversable, rough or smooth terrain, etc.) are required for autonomous robot navigation in unstructured outdoor environments. This paper provides a comprehensive review and critical analysis of these methods in the context of their applications to the problems of robot perception and scene understanding in unstructured environments and the related problems of localisation, environment mapping and path planning. State-of-the-art sensor fusion methods and multimodal scene understanding approaches are also discussed and evaluated within this context. The paper concludes with an in-depth discussion regarding the current state of the autonomous ground robot navigation challenge in unstructured outdoor environments and the most promising future research directions to overcome these challenges
SLAM algorithm applied to robotics assistance for navigation in unknown environments
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The combination of robotic tools with assistance technology determines a slightly explored area of applications and advantages for disability or elder people in their daily tasks. Autonomous motorized wheelchair navigation inside an environment, behaviour based control of orthopaedic arms or user's preference learning from a friendly interface are some examples of this new field. In this paper, a Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) algorithm is implemented to allow the environmental learning by a mobile robot while its navigation is governed by electromyographic signals. The entire system is part autonomous and part user-decision dependent (semi-autonomous). The environmental learning executed by the SLAM algorithm and the low level behaviour-based reactions of the mobile robot are robotic autonomous tasks, whereas the mobile robot navigation inside an environment is commanded by a Muscle-Computer Interface (MCI).</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>In this paper, a sequential Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) feature-based SLAM algorithm is implemented. The features correspond to lines and corners -concave and convex- of the environment. From the SLAM architecture, a global metric map of the environment is derived. The electromyographic signals that command the robot's movements can be adapted to the patient's disabilities. For mobile robot navigation purposes, five commands were obtained from the MCI: turn to the left, turn to the right, stop, start and exit. A kinematic controller to control the mobile robot was implemented. A low level behavior strategy was also implemented to avoid robot's collisions with the environment and moving agents.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The entire system was tested in a population of seven volunteers: three elder, two below-elbow amputees and two young normally limbed patients. The experiments were performed within a closed low dynamic environment. Subjects took an average time of 35 minutes to navigate the environment and to learn how to use the MCI. The SLAM results have shown a consistent reconstruction of the environment. The obtained map was stored inside the Muscle-Computer Interface.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The integration of a highly demanding processing algorithm (SLAM) with a MCI and the communication between both in real time have shown to be consistent and successful. The metric map generated by the mobile robot would allow possible future autonomous navigation without direct control of the user, whose function could be relegated to choose robot destinations. Also, the mobile robot shares the same kinematic model of a motorized wheelchair. This advantage can be exploited for wheelchair autonomous navigation.</p

Socially Compliant Navigation Dataset (SCAND): A Large-Scale Dataset of Demonstrations for Social Navigation
Social navigation is the capability of an autonomous agent, such as a robot,
to navigate in a 'socially compliant' manner in the presence of other
intelligent agents such as humans. With the emergence of autonomously
navigating mobile robots in human populated environments (e.g., domestic
service robots in homes and restaurants and food delivery robots on public
sidewalks), incorporating socially compliant navigation behaviors on these
robots becomes critical to ensuring safe and comfortable human robot
coexistence. To address this challenge, imitation learning is a promising
framework, since it is easier for humans to demonstrate the task of social
navigation rather than to formulate reward functions that accurately capture
the complex multi objective setting of social navigation. The use of imitation
learning and inverse reinforcement learning to social navigation for mobile
robots, however, is currently hindered by a lack of large scale datasets that
capture socially compliant robot navigation demonstrations in the wild. To fill
this gap, we introduce Socially CompliAnt Navigation Dataset (SCAND) a large
scale, first person view dataset of socially compliant navigation
demonstrations. Our dataset contains 8.7 hours, 138 trajectories, 25 miles of
socially compliant, human teleoperated driving demonstrations that comprises
multi modal data streams including 3D lidar, joystick commands, odometry,
visual and inertial information, collected on two morphologically different
mobile robots a Boston Dynamics Spot and a Clearpath Jackal by four different
human demonstrators in both indoor and outdoor environments. We additionally
perform preliminary analysis and validation through real world robot
experiments and show that navigation policies learned by imitation learning on
SCAND generate socially compliant behavior
A Comprehensive Review on Autonomous Navigation
The field of autonomous mobile robots has undergone dramatic advancements
over the past decades. Despite achieving important milestones, several
challenges are yet to be addressed. Aggregating the achievements of the robotic
community as survey papers is vital to keep the track of current
state-of-the-art and the challenges that must be tackled in the future. This
paper tries to provide a comprehensive review of autonomous mobile robots
covering topics such as sensor types, mobile robot platforms, simulation tools,
path planning and following, sensor fusion methods, obstacle avoidance, and
SLAM. The urge to present a survey paper is twofold. First, autonomous
navigation field evolves fast so writing survey papers regularly is crucial to
keep the research community well-aware of the current status of this field.
Second, deep learning methods have revolutionized many fields including
autonomous navigation. Therefore, it is necessary to give an appropriate
treatment of the role of deep learning in autonomous navigation as well which
is covered in this paper. Future works and research gaps will also be
discussed
Neuro-Fuzzy Combination for Reactive Mobile Robot Navigation: A Survey
Autonomous navigation of mobile robots is a fruitful research area because of the diversity of methods adopted by artificial intelligence. Recently, several works have generally surveyed the methods adopted to solve the path-planning problem of mobile robots. But in this paper, we focus on methods that combine neuro-fuzzy techniques to solve the reactive navigation problem of mobile robots in a previously unknown environment. Based on information sensed locally by an onboard system, these methods aim to design controllers capable of leading a robot to a target and avoiding obstacles encountered in a workspace. Thus, this study explores the neuro-fuzzy methods that have shown their effectiveness in reactive mobile robot navigation to analyze their architectures and discuss the algorithms and metaheuristics adopted in the learning phase
A biologically inspired meta-control navigation system for the Psikharpax rat robot
A biologically inspired navigation system for the mobile rat-like robot named Psikharpax is presented, allowing for self-localization and autonomous navigation in an initially unknown environment. The ability of parts of the model (e. g. the strategy selection mechanism) to reproduce rat behavioral data in various maze tasks has been validated before in simulations. But the capacity of the model to work on a real robot platform had not been tested. This paper presents our work on the implementation on the Psikharpax robot of two independent navigation strategies (a place-based planning strategy and a cue-guided taxon strategy) and a strategy selection meta-controller. We show how our robot can memorize which was the optimal strategy in each situation, by means of a reinforcement learning algorithm. Moreover, a context detector enables the controller to quickly adapt to changes in the environment-recognized as new contexts-and to restore previously acquired strategy preferences when a previously experienced context is recognized. This produces adaptivity closer to rat behavioral performance and constitutes a computational proposition of the role of the rat prefrontal cortex in strategy shifting. Moreover, such a brain-inspired meta-controller may provide an advancement for learning architectures in robotics
Benchmarking Reinforcement Learning Techniques for Autonomous Navigation
Deep reinforcement learning (RL) has brought many successes for autonomous
robot navigation. However, there still exists important limitations that
prevent real-world use of RL-based navigation systems. For example, most
learning approaches lack safety guarantees; and learned navigation systems may
not generalize well to unseen environments. Despite a variety of recent
learning techniques to tackle these challenges in general, a lack of an
open-source benchmark and reproducible learning methods specifically for
autonomous navigation makes it difficult for roboticists to choose what
learning methods to use for their mobile robots and for learning researchers to
identify current shortcomings of general learning methods for autonomous
navigation. In this paper, we identify four major desiderata of applying deep
RL approaches for autonomous navigation: (D1) reasoning under uncertainty, (D2)
safety, (D3) learning from limited trial-and-error data, and (D4)
generalization to diverse and novel environments. Then, we explore four major
classes of learning techniques with the purpose of achieving one or more of the
four desiderata: memory-based neural network architectures (D1), safe RL (D2),
model-based RL (D2, D3), and domain randomization (D4). By deploying these
learning techniques in a new open-source large-scale navigation benchmark and
real-world environments, we perform a comprehensive study aimed at establishing
to what extent can these techniques achieve these desiderata for RL-based
navigation systems
