Understanding consumer demand for new transport technologies and services, and implications for the future of mobility
The transport sector is witnessing unprecedented levels of disruption.
Privately owned cars that operate on internal combustion engines have been the
dominant modes of passenger transport for much of the last century. However,
recent advances in transport technologies and services, such as the development
of autonomous vehicles, the emergence of shared mobility services, and the
commercialization of alternative fuel vehicle technologies, promise to
revolutionise how humans travel. The implications are profound: some have
predicted the end of private car dependent Western societies, others have
portended greater suburbanization than has ever been observed before. If
transport systems are to fulfil current and future needs of different
subpopulations, and satisfy short and long-term societal objectives, it is
imperative that we comprehend the many factors that shape individual behaviour.
This chapter introduces the technologies and services most likely to disrupt
prevailing practices in the transport sector. We review past studies that have
examined current and future demand for these new technologies and services, and
their likely short and long-term impacts on extant mobility patterns. We
conclude with a summary of what these new technologies and services might mean

Design Criteria to Architect Continuous Experimentation for Self-Driving Vehicles
The software powering today's vehicles surpasses mechatronics as the
dominating engineering challenge due to its fast evolving and innovative
nature. In addition, the software and system architecture for upcoming vehicles
with automated driving functionality is already processing ~750MB/s -
corresponding to over 180 simultaneous 4K-video streams from popular
video-on-demand services. Hence, self-driving cars will run so much software to
resemble "small data centers on wheels" rather than just transportation
vehicles. Continuous Integration, Deployment, and Experimentation have been
successfully adopted for software-only products as enabling methodology for
feedback-based software development. For example, a popular search engine
conducts ~250 experiments each day to improve the software based on its users'
behavior. This work investigates design criteria for the software architecture
and the corresponding software development and deployment process for complex
cyber-physical systems, with the goal of enabling Continuous Experimentation as
a way to achieve continuous software evolution. Our research involved reviewing
related literature on the topic to extract relevant design requirements. The
study is concluded by describing the software development and deployment
process and software architecture adopted by our self-driving vehicle

Quantitative constraint-based computational model of tumor-to-stroma coupling via lactate shuttle
Cancer cells utilize large amounts of ATP to sustain growth, relying primarily on non-oxidative,
fermentative pathways for its production. In many types of cancers this leads, even in the presence
of oxygen, to the secretion of carbon equivalents (usually in the form of lactate) in the cell’s
surroundings, a feature known as the Warburg effect. While the molecular basis of this phenomenon
are still to be elucidated, it is clear that the spilling of energy resources contributes to creating a
peculiar microenvironment for tumors, possibly characterized by a degree of toxicity. This suggests
that mechanisms for recycling the fermentation products (e.g. a lactate shuttle) may be active,
effectively inducing a mutually beneficial metabolic coupling between aberrant and non-aberrant
cells. Here we analyze this scenario through a large-scale in silico metabolic model of interacting
human cells. By going beyond the cell-autonomous description, we show that elementary physico-
chemical constraints indeed favor the establishment of such a coupling under very broad conditions.
The characterization we obtained by tuning the aberrant cell’s demand for ATP, amino-acids and
fatty acids and/or the imbalance in nutrient partitioning provides quantitative support to the idea
that synergistic multi-cell effects play a central role in cancer sustainmen
Ultrafast optical ranging using microresonator soliton frequency combs
Light detection and ranging (LIDAR) is critical to many fields in science and
industry. Over the last decade, optical frequency combs were shown to offer
unique advantages in optical ranging, in particular when it comes to fast
distance acquisition with high accuracy. However, current comb-based concepts
are not suited for emerging high-volume applications such as drone navigation
or autonomous driving. These applications critically rely on LIDAR systems that
are not only accurate and fast, but also compact, robust, and amenable to
cost-efficient mass-production. Here we show that integrated dissipative
Kerr-soliton (DKS) comb sources provide a route to chip-scale LIDAR systems
that combine sub-wavelength accuracy and unprecedented acquisition speed with
the opportunity to exploit advanced photonic integration concepts for
wafer-scale mass production. In our experiments, we use a pair of free-running
DKS combs, each providing more than 100 carriers for massively parallel
synthetic-wavelength interferometry. We demonstrate dual-comb distance
measurements with record-low Allan deviations down to 12 nm at averaging times
of 14 s as well as ultrafast ranging at unprecedented measurement rates of
up to 100 MHz. We prove the viability of our technique by sampling the
naturally scattering surface of air-gun projectiles flying at 150 m/s (Mach
0.47). Combining integrated dual-comb LIDAR engines with chip-scale
nanophotonic phased arrays, the approach could allow widespread use of compact

Business Case and Technology Analysis for 5G Low Latency Applications
A large number of new consumer and industrial applications are likely to
change the classic operator's business models and provide a wide range of new
markets to enter. This article analyses the most relevant 5G use cases that
require ultra-low latency, from both technical and business perspectives. Low
latency services pose challenging requirements to the network, and to fulfill
them operators need to invest in costly changes in their network. In this
sense, it is not clear whether such investments are going to be amortized with
these new business models. In light of this, specific applications and
requirements are described and the potential market benefits for operators are
analysed. Conclusions show that operators have clear opportunities to add value
and position themselves strongly with the increasing number of services to be

Trends in life cycle greenhouse gas emissions of future light duty electric vehicles
The majority of previous studies examining life cycle greenhouse gas (LCGHG) emissions of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) have focused on efficiency-oriented vehicle designs with limited battery capacities. However, two dominant trends in the US BEV market make these studies increasingly obsolete: sales show significant increases in battery capacity and attendant range and are increasingly dominated by large luxury or high-performance vehicles. In addition, an era of new use and ownership models may mean significant changes to vehicle utilization, and the carbon intensity of electricity is expected to decrease. Thus, the question is whether these trends significantly alter our expectations of future BEV LCGHG emissions. To answer this question, three archetypal vehicle designs for the year 2025 along with scenarios for increased range and different use models are simulated in an LCGHG model: an efficiency-oriented compact vehicle; a high performance luxury sedan; and a luxury sport utility vehicle. While production emissions are less than 10% of LCGHG emissions for today's gasoline vehicles, they account for about 40% for a BEV, and as much as two-thirds of a future BEV operated on a primarily renewable grid. Larger battery systems and low utilization do not outweigh expected reductions in emissions from electricity used for vehicle charging. These trends could be exacerbated by increasing BEV market shares for larger vehicles. However, larger battery systems could reduce per-mile emissions of BEVs in high mileage applications, like on-demand ride sharing or shared vehicle fleets, meaning that trends in use patterns may countervail those in BEV design
