A service oriented approach for guidelines-based clinical decision support using BPMN
Evidence-based medical practice requires that clinical guidelines need to be documented in such a way that they represent a clinical workflow in its most accessible form. In order to optimize clinical processes to improve clinical outcomes, we propose a Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) based approach for implementing clinical guidelines that can be accessed from an Electronic Health Record (EHR) application with a Web Services enabled communication mechanism with the Enterprise Service Bus. We have used Business Process Modelling Notation (BPMN) for modelling and presenting the clinical pathway in the form of a workflow. The aim of this study is to produce spontaneous alerts in the healthcare workflow in the diagnosis of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). The use of BPMN as a tool to automate clinical guidelines has not been previously employed for providing Clinical Decision Support (CDS)

Hi, how can I help you?: Automating enterprise IT support help desks
Question answering is one of the primary challenges of natural language
understanding. In realizing such a system, providing complex long answers to
questions is a challenging task as opposed to factoid answering as the former
needs context disambiguation. The different methods explored in the literature
can be broadly classified into three categories namely: 1) classification
based, 2) knowledge graph based and 3) retrieval based. Individually, none of
them address the need of an enterprise wide assistance system for an IT support
and maintenance domain. In this domain the variance of answers is large ranging
from factoid to structured operating procedures; the knowledge is present
across heterogeneous data sources like application specific documentation,
ticket management systems and any single technique for a general purpose
assistance is unable to scale for such a landscape. To address this, we have
built a cognitive platform with capabilities adopted for this domain. Further,
we have built a general purpose question answering system leveraging the
platform that can be instantiated for multiple products, technologies in the
support domain. The system uses a novel hybrid answering model that
orchestrates across a deep learning classifier, a knowledge graph based context
disambiguation module and a sophisticated bag-of-words search system. This
orchestration performs context switching for a provided question and also does
a smooth hand-off of the question to a human expert if none of the automated
techniques can provide a confident answer. This system has been deployed across
675 internal enterprise IT support and maintenance projects.Comment: To appear in IAAI 201
Monitoring extensions for component-based distributed software
This paper defines a generic class of monitoring extensions to component-based distributed enterprise software. Introducing a monitoring extension to a legacy application system can be very costly. In this paper, we identify the minimum support for application monitoring within the generic components of a distributed system, necessary for rapid development of new monitoring extensions. Furthermore, this paper offers an approach for design and implementation of monitoring extensions at reduced cost. A framework of basic facilities supporting the monitoring extensions is presented. These facilities handle different aspects critical to the monitoring process, such as ordering of the generated monitoring events, decoupling of the application components from the components of the monitoring extensions, delivery of the monitoring events to multiple consumers, etc.\ud
The work presented in this paper is being validated in the prototype of a large distributed system, where a specific monitoring extension is built as a tool for debugging and testing the application behaviour.\u
SMiT: Local System Administration Across Disparate Environments Utilizing the Cloud
System administration can be tedious. Most IT departments maintain several (if not several hundred) computers, each of which requires periodic housecleaning: updating of software, clearing of log files, removing old cache files, etc. Compounding the problem is the computing environment itself. Because of the distributed nature of these computers, system administration time is often consumed in repetitive tasks that should be automated. Although current system administration tools exist, they are often centralized, unscalable, unintuitive, or inflexible. To meet the needs of system administrators and IT professionals, we developed the Script Management Tool (SMiT). SMiT is a web-based tool that permits administration of distributed computers from virtually anywhere via a common web browser. SMiT consists of a cloud-based server running on Google App Engine enabling users to intuitively create, manage, and deploy administration scripts. To support local execution of scripts, SMiT provides an execution engine that runs on the organization’s local machines and communicates with the server to fetch scripts, execute them, and deliver results back to the server. Because of its distributed asynchronous architecture SMiT is scalable to thousands of machines. SMiT is also extensible to a wide variety of system administration tasks via its plugin architecture
An automated ETL for online datasets
While using online datasets for machine learning is commonplace today, the quality of these datasets impacts on the performance
of prediction algorithms. One method for improving the semantics of new data sources is to map these sources to a common
data model or ontology. While semantic and structural heterogeneities must still be resolved, this provides a well established
approach to providing clean datasets, suitable for machine learning and analysis. However, when there is a requirement for a
close to real time usage of online data, a method for dynamic Extract-Transform-Load of new sources data must be developed.
In this work, we present a framework for integrating online and enterprise data sources, in close to real time, to provide
datasets for machine learning and predictive algorithms. An exhaustive evaluation compares a human built data transformation
process with our system’s machine generated ETL process, with very favourable results, illustrating the value and impact of
an automated approach
Service-Oriented Architecture for Space Exploration Robotic Rover Systems
Currently, industrial sectors are transforming their business processes into
e-services and component-based architectures to build flexible, robust, and
scalable systems, and reduce integration-related maintenance and development
costs. Robotics is yet another promising and fast-growing industry that deals
with the creation of machines that operate in an autonomous fashion and serve
for various applications including space exploration, weaponry, laboratory
research, and manufacturing. It is in space exploration that the most common
type of robots is the planetary rover which moves across the surface of a
planet and conducts a thorough geological study of the celestial surface. This
type of rover system is still ad-hoc in that it incorporates its software into
its core hardware making the whole system cohesive, tightly-coupled, more
susceptible to shortcomings, less flexible, hard to be scaled and maintained,
and impossible to be adapted to other purposes. This paper proposes a
service-oriented architecture for space exploration robotic rover systems made
out of loosely-coupled and distributed web services. The proposed architecture
consists of three elementary tiers: the client tier that corresponds to the
actual rover; the server tier that corresponds to the web services; and the
middleware tier that corresponds to an Enterprise Service Bus which promotes
interoperability between the interconnected entities. The niche of this
architecture is that rover's software components are decoupled and isolated
from the rover's body and possibly deployed at a distant location. A
service-oriented architecture promotes integrate-ability, scalability,
reusability, maintainability, and interoperability for client-to-server
