ConCall: An information service for researchers based on EdInfo
In this paper, we present new types of web information services, where users and information brokers collaborate in creating a user-adaptive information service. Such services impose a novel task on information brokers: they become responsible for maintaining the inference strategies used in user modeling. In return, information brokers obtain more accurate information about user needs, since the adaptivity ensures that user profiles are kept up to date and consistent with what users actually prefer, not only what they say that they prefer. We illustrate the approach by an example application, in which conference calls are collected and distributed to interested readers
Using Ontologies for the Design of Data Warehouses
Obtaining an implementation of a data warehouse is a complex task that forces
designers to acquire wide knowledge of the domain, thus requiring a high level
of expertise and becoming it a prone-to-fail task. Based on our experience, we
have detected a set of situations we have faced up with in real-world projects
in which we believe that the use of ontologies will improve several aspects of
the design of data warehouses. The aim of this article is to describe several
shortcomings of current data warehouse design approaches and discuss the
benefit of using ontologies to overcome them. This work is a starting point for
discussing the convenience of using ontologies in data warehouse design.Comment: 15 pages, 2 figure
Type-Based Detection of XML Query-Update Independence
This paper presents a novel static analysis technique to detect XML
query-update independence, in the presence of a schema. Rather than types, our
system infers chains of types. Each chain represents a path that can be
traversed on a valid document during query/update evaluation. The resulting
independence analysis is precise, although it raises a challenging issue:
recursive schemas may lead to infer infinitely many chains. A sound and
complete approximation technique ensuring a finite analysis in any case is
presented, together with an efficient implementation performing the chain-based
analysis in polynomial space and time.Comment: VLDB201
The StarView intelligent query mechanism
The StarView interface is being developed to facilitate the retrieval of scientific and engineering data produced by the Hubble Space Telescope. While predefined screens in the interface can be used to specify many common requests, ad hoc requests require a dynamic query formulation capability. Unfortunately, logical level knowledge is too sparse to support this capability. In particular, essential formulation knowledge is lost when the domain of interest is mapped to a set of database relation schemas. Thus, a system known as QUICK has been developed that uses conceptual design knowledge to facilitate query formulation. By heuristically determining strongly associated objects at the conceptual level, QUICK is able to formulate semantically reasonable queries in response to high-level requests that specify only attributes of interest. Moreover, by exploiting constraint knowledge in the conceptual design, QUICK assures that queries are formulated quickly and will execute efficiently
Model inference for spreadsheets
Many errors in spreadsheet formulas can be avoided if spreadsheets are built automati-
cally from higher-level models that can encode and enforce consistency constraints in the generated
spreadsheets. Employing this strategy for legacy spreadsheets is dificult, because the model has
to be reverse engineered from an existing spreadsheet and existing data must be transferred into
the new model-generated spreadsheet.
We have developed and implemented a technique that automatically infers relational schemas
from spreadsheets. This technique uses particularities from the spreadsheet realm to create better
schemas. We have evaluated this technique in two ways: First, we have demonstrated its appli-
cability by using it on a set of real-world spreadsheets. Second, we have run an empirical study
with users. The study has shown that the results produced by our technique are comparable to
the ones developed by experts starting from the same (legacy) spreadsheet data.
Although relational schemas are very useful to model data, they do not t well spreadsheets as
they do not allow to express layout. Thus, we have also introduced a mapping between relational
schemas and ClassSheets. A ClassSheet controls further changes to the spreadsheet and safeguards
it against a large class of formula errors. The developed tool is a contribution to spreadsheet
(reverse) engineering, because it lls an important gap and allows a promising design method
(ClassSheets) to be applied to a huge collection of legacy spreadsheets with minimal effort. We would like to thank Orlando Belo for his help on running and analyzing the empirical study. We would also like to thank Paulo Azevedo for his help in conducting the statistical analysis of our empirical study. We would also like to thank the anonymous reviewers for their suggestions which helped us to improve the paper.
