    An analysis of machine translation errors on the effectiveness of an Arabic-English QA system

    The aim of this paper is to investigate how much the effectiveness of a Question Answering (QA) system was affected by the performance of Machine Translation (MT) based question translation. Nearly 200 questions were selected from TREC QA tracks and ran through a question answering system. It was able to answer 42.6% of the questions correctly in a monolingual run. These questions were then translated manually from English into Arabic and back into English using an MT system, and then re-applied to the QA system. The system was able to answer 10.2% of the translated questions. An analysis of what sort of translation error affected which questions was conducted, concluding that factoid type questions are less prone to translation error than others

    iCLEF 2006 Overview: Searching the Flickr WWW photo-sharing repository

    This paper summarizes the task design for iCLEF 2006 (the CLEF interactive track). Compared to previous years, we have proposed a radically new task: searching images in a naturally multilingual database, Flickr, which has millions of photographs shared by people all over the planet, tagged and described in a wide variety of languages. Participants are expected to build a multilingual search front-end to Flickr (using Flickr’s search API) and study the behaviour of the users for a given set of searching tasks. The emphasis is put on studying the process, rather than evaluating its outcome

    DCU@FIRE2010: term conflation, blind relevance feedback, and cross-language IR with manual and automatic query translation

    For the first participation of Dublin City University (DCU) in the FIRE 2010 evaluation campaign, information retrieval (IR) experiments on English, Bengali, Hindi, and Marathi documents were performed to investigate term conation (different stemming approaches and indexing word prefixes), blind relevance feedback, and manual and automatic query translation. The experiments are based on BM25 and on language modeling (LM) for IR. Results show that term conation always improves mean average precision (MAP) compared to indexing unprocessed word forms, but different approaches seem to work best for different languages. For example, in monolingual Marathi experiments indexing 5-prefixes outperforms our corpus-based stemmer; in Hindi, the corpus-based stemmer achieves a higher MAP. For Bengali, the LM retrieval model achieves a much higher MAP than BM25 (0.4944 vs. 0.4526). In all experiments using BM25, blind relevance feedback yields considerably higher MAP in comparison to experiments without it. Bilingual IR experiments (English!Bengali and English!Hindi) are based on query translations obtained from native speakers and the Google translate web service. For the automatically translated queries, MAP is slightly (but not significantly) lower compared to experiments with manual query translations. The bilingual English!Bengali (English!Hindi) experiments achieve 81.7%-83.3% (78.0%-80.6%) of the best corresponding monolingual experiments

    Arabic Information Retrieval: A Relevancy Assessment Survey

    The paper presents a research in Arabic Information Retrieval (IR). It surveys the impact of statistical and morphological analysis of Arabic text in improving Arabic IR relevancy. We investigated the contributions of Stemming, Indexing, Query Expansion, Text Summarization (TS), Text Translation, and Named Entity Recognition (NER) in enhancing the relevancy of Arabic IR. Our survey emphasizing on the quantitative relevancy measurements provided in the surveyed publications. The paper shows that the researchers achieved significant enhancements especially in building accurate stemmers, with accuracy reaches 97%, and in measuring the impact of different indexing strategies. Query expansion and Text Translation showed positive relevancy effect. However, other tasks such as NER and TS still need more research to realize their impact on Arabic IR

    Mixed-Language Arabic- English Information Retrieval

    Includes abstract.Includes bibliographical references.This thesis attempts to address the problem of mixed querying in CLIR. It proposes mixed-language (language-aware) approaches in which mixed queries are used to retrieve most relevant documents, regardless of their languages. To achieve this goal, however, it is essential firstly to suppress the impact of most problems that are caused by the mixed-language feature in both queries and documents and which result in biasing the final ranked list. Therefore, a cross-lingual re-weighting model was developed. In this cross-lingual model, term frequency, document frequency and document length components in mixed queries are estimated and adjusted, regardless of languages, while at the same time the model considers the unique mixed-language features in queries and documents, such as co-occurring terms in two different languages. Furthermore, in mixed queries, non-technical terms (mostly those in non-English language) would likely overweight and skew the impact of those technical terms (mostly those in English) due to high document frequencies (and thus low weights) of the latter terms in their corresponding collection (mostly the English collection). Such phenomenon is caused by the dominance of the English language in scientific domains. Accordingly, this thesis also proposes reasonable re-weighted Inverse Document Frequency (IDF) so as to moderate the effect of overweighted terms in mixed queries

    Teaching a New Dog Old Tricks: Resurrecting Multilingual Retrieval Using Zero-shot Learning

    While billions of non-English speaking users rely on search engines every day, the problem of ad-hoc information retrieval is rarely studied for non-English languages. This is primarily due to a lack of data set that are suitable to train ranking algorithms. In this paper, we tackle the lack of data by leveraging pre-trained multilingual language models to transfer a retrieval system trained on English collections to non-English queries and documents. Our model is evaluated in a zero-shot setting, meaning that we use them to predict relevance scores for query-document pairs in languages never seen during training. Our results show that the proposed approach can significantly outperform unsupervised retrieval techniques for Arabic, Chinese Mandarin, and Spanish.     Embedding Web-based Statistical Translation Models in Cross-Language Information Retrieval

    Although more and more language pairs are covered by machine translation services, there are still many pairs that lack translation resources. Cross-language information retrieval (CLIR) is an application which needs translation functionality of a relatively low level of sophistication since current models for information retrieval (IR) are still based on a bag-of-words. The Web provides a vast resource for the automatic construction of parallel corpora which can be used to train statistical translation models automatically. The resulting translation models can be embedded in several ways in a retrieval model. In this paper, we will investigate the problem of automatically mining parallel texts from the Web and different ways of integrating the translation models within the retrieval process. Our experiments on standard test collections for CLIR show that the Web-based translation models can surpass commercial MT systems in CLIR tasks. These results open the perspective of constructing a fully automatic query translation device for CLIR at a very low cost.Comment: 37 page

    Identifying effective translations for cross-lingual Arabic-to-English user-generated speech search

    Cross Language Information Retrieval (CLIR) systems are a valuable tool to enable speakers of one language to search for content of interest expressed in a different language. A group for whom this is of particular interest is bilingual Arabic speakers who wish to search for English language content using information needs expressed in Arabic queries. A key challenge in CLIR is crossing the language barrier between the query and the documents. The most common approach to bridging this gap is automated query translation, which can be unreliable for vague or short queries. In this work, we examine the potential for improving CLIR effectiveness by predicting the translation effectiveness using Query Performance Prediction (QPP) techniques. We propose a novel QPP method to estimate the quality of translation for an Arabic-Engish Cross-lingual User-generated Speech Search (CLUGS) task. We present an empirical evaluation that demonstrates the quality of our method on alternative translation outputs extracted from an Arabic-to-English Machine Translation system developed for this task. Finally, we show how this framework can be integrated in CLUGS to find relevant translations for improved retrieval performance

    Two key assumptions shape the usual view of ranked retrieval: (1) that the searcher can choose words for their query that might appear in the documents that they wish to see, and (2) that ranking retrieved documents will suffice because the searcher will be able to recognize those which they wished to find. When the documents to be searched are in a language not known by the searcher, neither assumption is true. In such cases, Cross-Language Information Retrieval (CLIR) is needed.
