Unsupervised Text Extraction from G-Maps
This paper represents an text extraction method from Google maps, GIS
maps/images. Due to an unsupervised approach there is no requirement of any
prior knowledge or training set about the textual and non-textual parts. Fuzzy
CMeans clustering technique is used for image segmentation and Prewitt method
is used to detect the edges. Connected component analysis and gridding
technique enhance the correctness of the results. The proposed method reaches
98.5% accuracy level on the basis of experimental data sets.Comment: Proc. IEEE Conf. #30853, International Conference on Human Computer

Shape and Texture Combined Face Recognition for Detection of Forged ID Documents
This paper proposes a face recognition system that can be used to effectively match a face image scanned from an identity (ID) doc-ument against the face image stored in the biometric chip of such a document. The purpose of this specific face recognition algorithm is to aid the automatic detection of forged ID documents where the photography printed on the document’s surface has been altered or replaced. The proposed algorithm uses a novel combination of texture and shape features together with sub-space representation techniques. In addition, the robustness of the proposed algorithm when dealing with more general face recognition tasks has been proven with the Good, the Bad & the Ugly (GBU) dataset, one of the most challenging datasets containing frontal faces. The proposed algorithm has been complement-ed with a novel method that adopts two operating points to enhance the reliability of the algorithm’s final verification decision.Final Accepted Versio
A new approach for centerline extraction in handwritten strokes: an application to the constitution of a code book
International audienceWe present in this paper a new method of analysis and decomposition of handwritten documents into glyphs (graphemes) and their associated code book. The different techniques that are involved in this paper are inspired by image processing methods in a large sense and mathematical models implying graph coloring. Our approaches provide firstly a rapid and detailed characterization of handwritten shapes based on dynamic tracking of the handwriting (curvature, thickness, direction, etc.) and also a very efficient analysis method for the categorization of basic shapes (graphemes). The tools that we have produced enable paleographers to study quickly and more accurately a large volume of manuscripts and to extract a large number of characteristics that are specific to an individual or an era
A Multiple-Expert Binarization Framework for Multispectral Images
In this work, a multiple-expert binarization framework for multispectral
images is proposed. The framework is based on a constrained subspace selection
limited to the spectral bands combined with state-of-the-art gray-level
binarization methods. The framework uses a binarization wrapper to enhance the
performance of the gray-level binarization. Nonlinear preprocessing of the
individual spectral bands is used to enhance the textual information. An
evolutionary optimizer is considered to obtain the optimal and some suboptimal
3-band subspaces from which an ensemble of experts is then formed. The
framework is applied to a ground truth multispectral dataset with promising
results. In addition, a generalization to the cross-validation approach is
developed that not only evaluates generalizability of the framework, it also
provides a practical instance of the selected experts that could be then
applied to unseen inputs despite the small size of the given ground truth
dataset.Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures, 6 tables. Presented at ICDAR'1
Automatic License Plate Recognition Using Deep Learning Techniques
Automatic License Plate Recognition (ALPR) systems capture a vehicles license plate and recognize the license number and other required information from the captured image. ALPR systems have number of significant applications: law enforcement, public safety agencies, toll gate systems, etc. The goal of these systems is to recognize the characters and state on the license plate with high accuracy. ALPR has been implemented using various techniques. Traditional recognition methods use handcrafted features for obtaining features from the image. Unlike conventional methods, deep learning techniques automatically select features and are one of the game changing technologies in the field of computer vision, automatic recognition tasks, natural language processing. Some of the most successful deep learning methods involve Convolutional Neural Networks. This research applies deep learning techniques to the ALPR problem of recognizing the state and license number from the USA license plate. Existing ALPR systems include three stages of processing: license plate localization, character segmentation and character recognition but do little for the state recognition problem. Our research not only extracts the license number, but also processes state information from the license plate. We also propose various techniques for further research in the field of ALPR using deep learning techniques
