Romoth J, Porrmann M, Rückert U. Survey of FPGA applications in the period 2000 – 2015 (Technical Report).; 2017.Since their introduction, FPGAs can be seen in more and more different fields of applications. The key advantage is the combination of software-like flexibility with the performance otherwise common to hardware. Nevertheless, every application field introduces special requirements to the used computational architecture. This paper provides an overview of the different topics FPGAs have been used for in the last 15 years of research and why they have been chosen over other processing units like e.g. CPUs

    MediaSync: Handbook on Multimedia Synchronization

    Get PDF
This book provides an approachable overview of the most recent advances in the fascinating field of media synchronization (mediasync), gathering contributions from the most representative and influential experts. Understanding the challenges of this field in the current multi-sensory, multi-device, and multi-protocol world is not an easy task. The book revisits the foundations of mediasync, including theoretical frameworks and models, highlights ongoing research efforts, like hybrid broadband broadcast (HBB) delivery and users' perception modeling (i.e., Quality of Experience or QoE), and paves the way for the future (e.g., towards the deployment of multi-sensory and ultra-realistic experiences). Although many advances around mediasync have been devised and deployed, this area of research is getting renewed attention to overcome remaining challenges in the next-generation (heterogeneous and ubiquitous) media ecosystem. Given the significant advances in this research area, its current relevance and the multiple disciplines it involves, the availability of a reference book on mediasync becomes necessary. This book fills the gap in this context. In particular, it addresses key aspects and reviews the most relevant contributions within the mediasync research space, from different perspectives. Mediasync: Handbook on Multimedia Synchronization is the perfect companion for scholars and practitioners that want to acquire strong knowledge about this research area, and also approach the challenges behind ensuring the best mediated experiences, by providing the adequate synchronization between the media elements that constitute these experiences

Recent Advances in Volatile Organic Compound Analysis as Diagnostic Biomarkers

    Get PDF
Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are a diverse group of carbon-based molecules that are volatile at ambient temperatures and are emitted by an organism as a result of metabolic processes of cells and associated microbiome. The qualitative and quantitative profile of VOCs in biological fluids can vary depending on the physiological changes. Therefore, the pattern of volatile metabolites may reflect the presence of several diseases. This has been intensively investigated in the last few decades, resulting in an increasing number of studies focused on new volatile biomarker discovery. This reprint aimed to summarize the recent findings related to VOCs detected in various biological fluids such as breath, urine and feces for biomedical applications. The content covers various topics, including but not limited to biomedical/medical application of VOC analysis, biomarker discovery, and novel approaches for sampling and analyzing VOCs

Deep Learning Enabled Semantic Communication Systems

In the past decades, communications primarily focus on how to accurately and effectively transmit symbols (measured by bits) from the transmitter to the receiver. Recently, various new applications appear, such as autonomous transportation, consumer robotics, environmental monitoring, and tele-health. The interconnection of these applications will generate a staggering amount of data in the order of zetta-bytes and require massive connectivity over limited spectrum resources but with lower latency, which poses critical challenges to conventional communication systems. Semantic communication has been proposed to overcome the challenges by extracting the meanings of data and filtering out the useless, irrelevant, and unessential information, which is expected to be robust to terrible channel environments and reduce the size of transmitted data. While semantic communications have been proposed decades ago, their applications to the wireless communication scenario remain limited. Deep learning (DL) based neural networks can effectively extract semantic information and can be optimized in an end-to-end (E2E) manner. The inborn characteristics of DL are suitable for semantic communications, which motivates us to exploit DL-enabled semantic communication. Inspired by the above, this thesis focus on exploring the semantic communication theory and designing semantic communication systems. First, a basic DL based semantic communication system, named DeepSC, is proposed for text transmission. In addition, DL based multi-user semantic communication systems are investigated for transmitting single-modal data and multimodal data, respectively, in which intelligent tasks are performed at the receiver directly. Moreover, a semantic communication system with a memory module, named Mem-DeepSC, is designed to support both memoryless and memory intelligent tasks. Finally, a lite distributed semantic communication system based on DL, named L-DeepSC, is proposed with low complexity, where the data transmission from the Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices to the cloud/edge works at the semantic level to improve transmission efficiency. The proposed various DeepSC systems can achieve less data transmission to reduce the transmission latency, lower complexity to fit capacity-constrained devices, higher robustness to multi-user interference and channel noise, and better performance to perform various intelligent tasks compared to the conventional communication systems

The Logic of Random Pulses: Stochastic Computing.

Recent developments in the field of electronics have produced nano-scale devices whose operation can only be described in probabilistic terms. In contrast with the conventional deterministic computing that has dominated the digital world for decades, we investigate a fundamentally different technique that is probabilistic by nature, namely, stochastic computing (SC). In SC, numbers are represented by bit-streams of 0's and 1's, in which the probability of seeing a 1 denotes the value of the number. The main benefit of SC is that complicated arithmetic computation can be performed by simple logic circuits. For example, a single (logic) AND gate performs multiplication. The dissertation begins with a comprehensive survey of SC and its applications. We highlight its main challenges, which include long computation time and low accuracy, as well as the lack of general design methods. We then address some of the more important challenges. We introduce a new SC design method, called STRAUSS, that generates efficient SC circuits for arbitrary target functions. We then address the problems arising from correlation among stochastic numbers (SNs). In particular, we show that, contrary to general belief, correlation can sometimes serve as a resource in SC design. We also show that unlike conventional circuits, SC circuits can tolerate high error rates and are hence useful in some new applications that involve nondeterministic behavior in the underlying circuitry. Finally, we show how SC's properties can be exploited in the design of an efficient vision chip that is suitable for retinal implants. In particular, we show that SC circuits can directly operate on signals with neural encoding, which eliminates the need for data conversion.PhDComputer Science and EngineeringUniversity of Michigan, Horace H.
