Toward next generation coaching tools for court based racquet sports
Even with today’s advances in automatic indexing of multimedia content, existing coaching tools for court sports lack the ability to automatically index a competitive match into key events. This paper proposes an automatic event indexing and event retrieval system
for tennis, which can be used to coach from beginners upwards.
Event indexing is possible using either visual or inertial sensing, with the latter potentially providing system portability. To achieve maximum performance in event indexing, multi-sensor data integration is implemented, where data from both sensors is merged to automatically index key tennis events. A complete event retrieval
system is also presented to allow coaches to build advanced queries which existing sports coaching solutions cannot facilitate without an inordinate amount of manual indexing
Intelligent indexing of crime scene photographs
The Scene of Crime Information System's automatic image-indexing prototype goes beyond extracting keywords and syntactic relations from captions. The semantic information it gathers gives investigators an intuitive, accurate way to search a database of cases for specific photographic evidence. Intelligent, automatic indexing and retrieval of crime scene photographs is one of the main functions of SOCIS, our research prototype developed within the Scene of Crime Information System project. Thesaurus based automatic keyphrase indexing
We propose a new method that enhances automatic keyphrase extraction by using semantic information on terms and phrases gleaned from a domain-specific thesaurus. We evaluate the results against keyphrase sets assigned by a state-of-the-art keyphrase extraction system and those assigned by six professional indexers

Document indexation is an essential task achieved by archivists or automatic
indexing tools. To retrieve relevant documents to a query, keywords describing
this document have to be carefully chosen. Archivists have to find out the
right topic of a document before starting to extract the keywords. For an
archivist indexing specialized documents, experience plays an important role.
But indexing documents on different topics is much harder. This article
proposes an innovative method for an indexing support system. This system takes
as input an ontology and a plain text document and provides as output

An Approach to Automatic Indexing of Scientific Publications in High Energy Physics for Database SPIRES HEP
We introduce an approach to automatic indexing of e-prints based on a
pattern-matching technique making extensive use of an Associative Patterns
Dictionary (APD), developed by us. Entries in the APD consist of natural
language phrases with the same semantic interpretation as a set of keywords
from a controlled vocabulary. The method also allows to recognize within
e-prints formulae written in TeX notations that might also appear as keywords.
We present an automatic indexing system, AUTEX, which we have applied to
keyword index e-prints in selected areas in high energy physics (HEP) making
use of the DESY-HEPI thesaurus as a controlled vocabulary.Comment: 23 pages, 4 figure
Indexing with WordNet synsets can improve Text Retrieval
The classical, vector space model for text retrieval is shown to give better
results (up to 29% better in our experiments) if WordNet synsets are chosen as
the indexing space, instead of word forms. This result is obtained for a
manually disambiguated test collection (of queries and documents) derived from
the Semcor semantic concordance. The sensitivity of retrieval performance to
(automatic) disambiguation errors when indexing documents is also measured.
Finally, it is observed that if queries are not disambiguated, indexing by
