    Merging enriched Finite Element triangle meshes for fast prototyping of alternate solutions in the context of industrial maintenance

    A new approach to the merging of Finite Element (FE) triangle meshes is proposed. Not only it takes into account the geometric aspects, but it also considers the way the semantic information possibly associated to the groups of entities (nodes, faces) can be maintained. Such high level modification capabilities are of major importance in all the engineering activities requiring fast modifications of meshes without going back to the CAD model. This is especially true in the context of industrial maintenance where the engineers often have to solve critical problems in very short time. Indeed, in this case, the product is already designed, the CAD models are not necessarily available and the FE models might be tuned. Thus, the product behaviour has to be studied and improved during its exploitation while prototyping directly several alternate solutions. Such a framework also finds interest in the preliminary design phases where alternative solutions have to be simulated. The algorithm first removes the intersecting faces in an n-ring neighbourhood so that the filling of the created holes produces triangles whose sizes smoothly evolve according to the possibly heterogeneous sizes of the surrounding triagles. The holefilling algorithm is driven by an aspect ratio factor which ensures that the produced triangulation fits well the FE requirements. It is also constrained by the boundaries of the groups of entities gathering together the simulation semantic. The filled areas are then deformed to blend smoothly with the surroundings meshes

    A framework for hull form reverse engineering and geometry integration into numerical simulations

    The thesis presents a ship hull form specific reverse engineering and CAD integration framework. The reverse engineering part proposes three alternative suitable reconstruction approaches namely curves network, direct surface fitting, and triangulated surface reconstruction. The CAD integration part includes surface healing, region identification, and domain preparation strategies which used to adapt the CAD model to downstream application requirements. In general, the developed framework bridges a point cloud and a CAD model obtained from IGES and STL file into downstream applications

    Geometric and form feature recognition tools applied to a design for assembly methodology

    The paper presents geometric tools for an automated Design for Assembly (DFA) assessment system. For each component in an assembly a two step features search is performed: firstly (using the minimal bounding box) mass, dimensions and symmetries are identified allowing the part to be classified, according to DFA convention, as either rotational or prismatic; secondly form features are extracted allowing an effective method of mechanised orientation to be determined. Together these algorithms support the fuzzy decision support system, of an assembly-orientated CAD system known as FuzzyDFA

The last avoids high expenses in terms of money and time spent on intermediate manufacturing. It is gainful from the reality to the virtuality but the process could be further optimized especially during the product behaviour optimization phase. This process involves repetition of four main processing steps: CAD design and modification, mesh creation, Finite Element (FE) model generation with the association of physical and geometric data, FE Analysis. The product behaviour analysis loop is performed on the rst design solution as well as on the numerous successive product optimization loops. Each design solution evaluation necessitates the same time as required for the first product design that is particularly crucial in the context of maintenance. In this paper we propose a new framework for CAD-less product optimisation through FE analysis which reduces the model preparation activities traditionally required for FE model creation. More concretely, the idea is to directly operate on the rstly created FE mesh, enriched with physical/geometric semantics, to perform the product modi cations required to achieve its optimised version. In order to accomplish the proposed CAD-less FE analysis framework, modification operators acting on both the mesh geometry and the associated semantics need to be devised. In this paper we discuss the underlying concepts and present possible components for the development of such operators. A high-level operator speci cation is proposed according to a modular structure that allows an easy realisation of di erent mesh modification operators. Here, two instances of this high-level operator are described: the planar cracking and the drilling. The realised prototypes validated on industrial FE models show clearly the feasibility of this approach

    Automatic surface mesh generation for discrete models: A complete and automatic pipeline based on reparameterization

    Triangulations are an ubiquitous input for the finite element community. However, most raw triangulations obtained by imaging techniques are unsuitable as-is for finite element analysis. In this paper, we give a robust pipeline for handling those triangulations, based on the computation of a one-to-one parametrization for automatically selected patches of input triangles, which makes each patch amenable to remeshing by standard finite element meshing algorithms. Using only geometrical arguments, we prove that a discrete parametrization of a patch is one-to-one if (and only if) its image in the parameter space is such that all parametric triangles have a positive area. We then derive a non-standard linear discretization scheme based on mean value coordinates to compute such one-to-one parametrizations, and show that the scheme does not discretize a Laplacian on a structured mesh. The proposed pipeline is implemented in the open source mesh generator Gmsh, where the creation of suitable patches is based on triangulation topology and parametrization quality, combined with feature edge detection.     A comparison of hole-filling methods in 3D

    This paper presents a review of the most relevant current techniques that deal with hole-filling in 3D models. Contrary to earlier reports, which approach mesh repairing in a sparse and global manner, the objective of this review is twofold. First, a specific and comprehensive review of hole-filling techniques (as a relevant part in the field of mesh repairing) is carried out. We present a brief summary of each technique with attention paid to its algorithmic essence, main contributions and limitations. Second, a solid comparison between 34 methods is established. To do this, we define 19 possible meaningful features and properties that can be found in a generic hole-filling process. Then, we use these features to assess the virtues and deficiencies of the method and to build comparative tables.     A survey on 3D CAD model quality assurance and testing

    [EN] A new taxonomy of issues related to CAD model quality is presented, which distinguishes between explicit and procedural models. For each type of model, morphologic, syntactic, and semantic errors are characterized. The taxonomy was validated successfully when used to classify quality testing tools, which are aimed at detecting and repairing data errors that may affect the simplification, interoperability, and reusability of CAD models. The study shows that low semantic level errors that hamper simplification are reasonably covered in explicit representations, although many CAD quality testers are still unaffordable for Small and Medium Enterprises, both in terms of cost and training time. Interoperability has been reasonably solved by standards like STEP AP 203 and AP214, but model reusability is not feasible in explicit representations. Procedural representations are promising, as interactive modeling editors automatically prevent most morphologic errors derived from unsuitable modeling strategies. Interoperability problems between procedural representations are expected to decrease dramatically with STEP AP242. Higher semantic aspects of quality such as assurance of design intent, however, are hardly supported by current CAD quality testers. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd.
