    A corpus-based study of Spanish L2 mispronunciations by Japanese speakers

    In a companion paper (Carranza et al.) submitted to this conference we discuss the importance of collecting specific L1-L2 speech corpora for the sake of developing effective Computer Assisted Pronunciation Training (CAPT) programs. In this paper we examine this point more deeply by reporting on a study that was aimed at compiling and analysing such a corpus to draw up an inventory of recurrent pronunciation errors to be addressed in a CAPT application that makes use of Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR). In particular we discuss some of the results obtained in the analyses of this corpus and some of the methodological issues we had to deal with. The corpus features 8.9 hours of spontaneous, semi-spontaneous and read speech recorded from 20 Japanese students of Spanish L2. The speech data was segmented and transcribed at the orthographic, canonical-phonemic and narrow-phonetic level using Praat software [1]. We adopted the SAMPA phonemic inventory for the phonemic transcription adapted to Spanish [2] and added 11 new symbols and 7 diacritics taken from X-SAMPA [3] for the narrow-phonetic transcription. Non linguistic phenomena and incidents were also annotated with XML tags in independent tiers. Standards for transcribing and annotating non-native spontaneous speech ([4], [5]), as well as the error encoding system used in the project will be addressed. Up to 13410 errors were segmented, aligned with the canonical-phonemic tier and the narrow-phonetic tier, and annotated following an encoding system that specifies the type of error (substitutions, insertion and deletion), the affected phone and the preceding and following phonemic contexts where the error occurred. We then carried out additional analyses to check the accuracy of the transcriptions by asking two other annotators to transcribe a subset of the speech material. We calculated intertranscriber agreement coefficients. The data was automatically recovered by Praat scripts and statistically analyzed with R. The resulting frequency ratios obtained for the most frequent errors and the most frequent contexts of appearance were statistically tested to determine their significance values. We report on the analyses of the combined annotations and draw up an inventory of errors that should be addressed in the training. We then consider how ASR can be employed to properly detect these errors. Furthermore, we suggest possible exercises that may be included in the training to improve the errors identified

Pronunciation variations in non-native speech are far more diverse than those observed in native speech, which may pose a difficulty in combining such knowledge in an automatic system. Moreover, most of the existing methods rely on feature extraction results from signal processing, prosodic analysis, and natural language processing techniques. Such methods entail limitations since they necessarily depend on finding the right features for the task and the extraction accuracies. This thesis presents a new approach for corrective feedback generation in a CAPT system, in which pronunciation variation patterns and linguistic correlates with accentedness are analyzed and combined with a deep neural network approach, so that feature engineering efforts are minimized while maintaining the linguistically important factors for the corrective feedback generation task. Investigations on non-native Korean speech characteristics in contrast with those of native speakers, and their correlation with accentedness judgement show that both segmental and prosodic variations are important factors in a Korean CAPT system. The present thesis argues that the feedback generation task can be interpreted as a style transfer problem, and proposes to evaluate the idea using generative adversarial network. A corrective feedback generation model is trained on 65,100 read utterances by 217 non-native speakers of 27 mother tongue backgrounds. The features are automatically learnt in an unsupervised way in an auxiliary classifier CycleGAN setting, in which the generator learns to map a foreign accented speech to native speech distributions. In order to inject linguistic knowledge into the network, an auxiliary classifier is trained so that the feedback also identifies the linguistic error types that were defined in the first half of the thesis.     L2-ARCTIC: A Non-Native English Speech Corpus

    In this paper, we introduce L2-ARCTIC, a speech corpus of non-native English that is intended for research in voice conversion, accent conversion, and mispronunciation detection. This initial release includes recordings from ten non-native speakers of English whose first languages (L1s) are Hindi, Korean, Mandarin, Spanish, and Arabic, each L1 containing recordings from one male and one female speaker. Each speaker recorded approximately one hour of read speech from the Carnegie Mellon University ARCTIC prompts, from which we generated orthographic and forced-aligned phonetic transcriptions. In addition, we manually annotated 150 utterances per speaker to identify three types of mispronunciation errors: substitutions, deletions, and additions, making it a valuable resource not only for research in voice conversion and accent conversion but also in computer-assisted pronunciation training.     Directions for the future of technology in pronunciation research and teaching

    This paper reports on the role of technology in state-of-the-art pronunciation research and instruction, and makes concrete suggestions for future developments. The point of departure for this contribution is that the goal of second language (L2) pronunciation research and teaching should be enhanced comprehensibility and intelligibility as opposed to native-likeness. Three main areas are covered here. We begin with a presentation of advanced uses of pronunciation technology in research with a special focus on the expertise required to carry out even small-scale investigations. Next, we discuss the nature of data in pronunciation research, pointing to ways in which future work can build on advances in corpus research and crowdsourcing. Finally, we consider how these insights pave the way for researchers and developers working to create research-informed, computer-assisted pronunciation teaching resources. We conclude with predictions for future developments

    The use of technology, such as computer-assisted language learning (CALL), is used in teaching and learning in the foreign language classrooms where it is most needed.One promising emerging technology that supports language learning is automatic speech recognition (ASR).Integrating such technology, especially in the instruction of pronunciation in the classroom, is important in helping students to achieve correct pronunciation. In Iraq, English is a foreign language, and it is not surprising that learners commit many pronunciation mistakes.One factor contributing to these mistakes is the difference between the Arabic and English phonetic systems.Thus, the sound transformation from the mother tongue (Arabic) to the target language (English) is one barrier for Arab learners.The purpose of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of using automatic speech recognition ASR EyeSpeak software in improving the pronunciation of Iraqi learners of English. An experimental research project with a pretest-posttest design is conducted over a one-month period in the Department of English at Al-Turath University College in Baghdad, Iraq.The ten participants are randomly selected first-year college students enrolled in a pronunciation class that uses traditional teaching methods and ASR EyeSpeak software.The findings show that using EyeSpeak software leads to a significant improvement in the studentsโ€™ English pronunciation, evident from the test scores they achieve after using EyeSpeak software

    Machine learning approaches to improving mispronunciation detection on an imbalanced corpus

    This thesis reports the investigations into the task of phone-level pronunciation error detection, the performance of which is heavily affected by the imbalanced distribution of the classes in a manually annotated data set of non-native English (Read Aloud responses from the TOEFL Junior Pilot assessment). In order to address problems caused by this extreme class imbalance, two machine learning approaches, cost-sensitive learning and over-sampling, are explored to improve the classification performance. Specifically, approaches which assigned weights inversely proportional to class frequencies and synthetic minority over-sampling technique (SMOTE) were applied to a range of classifiers using feature sets that included information about the acoustic signal, the linguistic properties of the utterance, and word identity. Empirical experiments demonstrate that both balancing approaches lead to a substantial performance improvement (in terms of f1 score) over the baseline on this extremely imbalanced data set. In addition, this thesis also discusses which features are the most important and which classifiers are most effective for the task of identifying phone-level pronunciation errors in non-native speech

    Reinvestment and spoken language proficiency : evidence from Cantonese learners of Mandarin and Mandarin learners of Cantonese

    The Speech Reinvestment Scale (SRS) (Wong, in preparation) was a newly developed questionnaire to investigate oneโ€™s predisposition to exert conscious control over speech movements. The present study was designed to determine (1) if any differences exist between SRS scores in first and second language production; (2) if any correlation exists between oneโ€™s oral proficiency and oneโ€™s SRS score in a second language. Two groups of participants (Group 1: 63 Cantonese-speaking learners of Mandarin; Group 2: 41 Mandarin-speaking learners of Cantonese) were recruited and each participant was asked to fill in a questionnaire on demographic information, complete two SRS forms, in regard to first and second language, respectively and to record a speech sample using their second language. The speech samples were rated by 3 listeners in each group to obtain an average proficiency score for each participant. The results revealed a significant difference between SRS score in first and second language. No significant correlation was found between L2 SRS and proficiency score. This may indicate that the relationship between reinvestment and speech proficiency is more complicated than we expected.     Phonologically-Informed Speech Coding for Automatic Speech Recognition-based Foreign Language Pronunciation Training

    Automatic speech recognition (ASR) and computer-assisted pronunciation training (CAPT) systems used in foreign-language educational contexts are often not developed with the specific task of second-language acquisition in mind. Systems that are built for this task are often excessively targeted to one native language (L1) or a single phonemic contrast and are therefore burdensome to train. Current algorithms have been shown to provide erroneous feedback to learners and show inconsistencies between human and computer perception. These discrepancies have thus far hindered more extensive application of ASR in educational systems. This thesis reviews the computational models of the human perception of American English vowels for use in an educational context; exploring and comparing two types of acoustic representation: a low-dimensionality linguistically-informed formant representation and more traditional Mel frequency cepstral coefficients (MFCCs). We first compare two algorithms for phoneme classification (support vector machines and long short-term memory recurrent neural networks) trained on American English vowel productions from the TIMIT corpus. We then conduct a perceptual study of non-native English vowel productions perceived by native American English speakers. We compare the results of the computational experiment and the human perception experiment to assess human/model agreement. Dissimilarities between human and model classification are explored. More phonologically-informed audio signal representations should create a more human-aligned, less L1-dependent vowel classification system with higher interpretability that can be further refined with more phonetic- and/or phonological-based research. Results show that linguistically-informed speech coding produces results that better align with human classification, supporting use of the proposed coding for ASR-based CAPT
