Consensus of Multi-Agent Networks in the Presence of Adversaries Using Only Local Information
This paper addresses the problem of resilient consensus in the presence of
misbehaving nodes. Although it is typical to assume knowledge of at least some
nonlocal information when studying secure and fault-tolerant consensus
algorithms, this assumption is not suitable for large-scale dynamic networks.
To remedy this, we emphasize the use of local strategies to deal with
resilience to security breaches. We study a consensus protocol that uses only
local information and we consider worst-case security breaches, where the
compromised nodes have full knowledge of the network and the intentions of the
other nodes. We provide necessary and sufficient conditions for the normal
nodes to reach consensus despite the influence of the malicious nodes under
different threat assumptions. These conditions are stated in terms of a novel

Evolutionary improvement of programs
Most applications of genetic programming (GP) involve the creation of an entirely new function, program or expression to solve a specific problem. In this paper, we propose a new approach that applies GP to improve existing software by optimizing its non-functional properties such as execution time, memory usage, or power consumption. In general, satisfying non-functional requirements is a difficult task and often achieved in part by optimizing compilers. However, modern compilers are in general not always able to produce semantically equivalent alternatives that optimize non-functional properties, even if such alternatives are known to exist: this is usually due to the limited local nature of such optimizations. In this paper, we discuss how best to combine and extend the existing evolutionary methods of GP, multiobjective optimization, and coevolution in order to improve existing software. Given as input the implementation of a function, we attempt to evolve a semantically equivalent version, in this case optimized to reduce execution time subject to a given probability distribution of inputs. We demonstrate that our framework is able to produce non-obvious optimizations that compilers are not yet able to generate on eight example functions. We employ a coevolved population of test cases to encourage the preservation of the function's semantics. We exploit the original program both through seeding of the population in order to focus the search, and as an oracle for testing purposes. As well as discussing the issues that arise when attempting to improve software, we employ rigorous experimental method to provide interesting and practical insights to suggest how to address these issues
Low computational complexity model reduction of power systems with preservation of physical characteristics
A data-driven algorithm recently proposed to solve the problem of model reduction by moment matching is extended to multi-input, multi-output systems. The algorithm is exploited for the model reduction of large-scale interconnected power systems and it offers, simultaneously, a low computational complexity approximation of the moments and the possibility to easily enforce constraints on the reduced order model. This advantage is used to preserve selected slow and poorly damped modes. The preservation of these modes has been shown to be important from a physical point of view and in obtaining an overall good approximation. The problem of the choice of the socalled tangential directions is also analyzed. The algorithm and the resulting reduced order model are validated with the study of the dynamic response of the NETS-NYPS benchmark system (68-Bus, 16-Machine, 5-Area) to multiple fault scenarios
On Submodularity and Controllability in Complex Dynamical Networks
Controllability and observability have long been recognized as fundamental
structural properties of dynamical systems, but have recently seen renewed
interest in the context of large, complex networks of dynamical systems. A
basic problem is sensor and actuator placement: choose a subset from a finite
set of possible placements to optimize some real-valued controllability and
observability metrics of the network. Surprisingly little is known about the
structure of such combinatorial optimization problems. In this paper, we show
that several important classes of metrics based on the controllability and
observability Gramians have a strong structural property that allows for either
efficient global optimization or an approximation guarantee by using a simple
greedy heuristic for their maximization. In particular, the mapping from
possible placements to several scalar functions of the associated Gramian is
either a modular or submodular set function. The results are illustrated on
randomly generated systems and on a problem of power electronic actuator

Towards Fast-Convergence, Low-Delay and Low-Complexity Network Optimization
Distributed network optimization has been studied for well over a decade.
However, we still do not have a good idea of how to design schemes that can
simultaneously provide good performance across the dimensions of utility
optimality, convergence speed, and delay. To address these challenges, in this
paper, we propose a new algorithmic framework with all these metrics
approaching optimality. The salient features of our new algorithm are
three-fold: (i) fast convergence: it converges with only
iterations that is the fastest speed among all the existing algorithms; (ii)
low delay: it guarantees optimal utility with finite queue length; (iii) simple
implementation: the control variables of this algorithm are based on virtual
queues that do not require maintaining per-flow information. The new technique
builds on a kind of inexact Uzawa method in the Alternating Directional Method
of Multiplier, and provides a new theoretical path to prove global and linear
convergence rate of such a method without requiring the full rank assumption of
the constraint matrix
