Video Abstracting at a Semantical Level

    Get PDF
One the most common form of a video abstract is the movie trailer. Contemporary movie trailers share a common structure across genres which allows for an automatic generation and also reflects the corresponding moviea s composition. In this thesis a system for the automatic generation of trailers is presented. In addition to action trailers, the system is able to deal with further genres such as Horror and comedy trailers, which were first manually analyzed in order to identify their basic structures. To simplify the modeling of trailers and the abstract generation itself a new video abstracting application was developed. This application is capable of performing all steps of the abstract generation automatically and allows for previews and manual optimizations. Based on this system, new abstracting models for horror and comedy trailers were created and the corresponding trailers have been automatically generated using the new abstracting models. In an evaluation the automatic trailers were compared to the original Trailers and showed a similar structure. However, the automatically generated trailers still do not exhibit the full perfection of the Hollywood originals as they lack intentional storylines across shots

Digital tools in media studies: analysis and research. An overview

    Get PDF
Digital tools are increasingly used in media studies, opening up new perspectives for research and analysis, while creating new problems at the same time. In this volume, international media scholars and computer scientists present their projects, varying from powerful film-historical databases to automatic video analysis software, discussing their application of digital tools and reporting on their results. This book is the first publication of its kind and a helpful guide to both media scholars and computer scientists who intend to use digital tools in their research, providing information on applications, standards, and problems

Lowering Barriers to Entry: YouTube, Fair Use, and the Copyright Claims Board

    Get PDF
The Internet has transformed the landscape of media production by opening the doors of creation to anyone with a computer and an idea. YouTube allows for millions of individuals to post and disseminate content at a low cost to widespread audiences. But while the barriers to entry for content creation have lowered, the barriers to the legal copyright system have remained largely unmoved since YouTube’s inception. This Note seeks to explore the exact specifications of YouTube’s copyright system, both the one mandated by law and the one created voluntarily by YouTube, in order to understand where fair use stands in online copyright infringement detection. Additionally, the Note proposes the newly functional Copyright Claims Board as a way of lowering the barrier to entry into the legal system to allow for content creators to fight against online copyright abuse

Automated Composition of Picture-Synched Music Soundtracks for Movies

    Get PDF
We describe the implementation of and early results from a system that automatically composes picture-synched musical soundtracks for videos and movies. We use the phrase "picture-synched" to mean that the structure of the automatically composed music is determined by visual events in the input movie, i.e. the final music is synchronised to visual events and features such as cut transitions or within-shot key-frame events. Our system combines automated video analysis and computer-generated music-composition techniques to create unique soundtracks in response to the video input, and can be thought of as an initial step in creating a computerised replacement for a human composer writing music to fit the picture-locked edit of a movie. Working only from the video information in the movie, key features are extracted from the input video, using video analysis techniques, which are then fed into a machine-learning-based music generation tool, to compose a piece of music from scratch. The resulting soundtrack is tied to video features, such as scene transition markers and scene-level energy values, and is unique to the input video. Although the system we describe here is only a preliminary proof-of-concept, user evaluations of the output of the system have been positive.Comment: To be presented at the 16th ACM SIGGRAPH European Conference on Visual Media Production. IPTV data reduction strategy to measure real users’ behaviours

Dissertação para obtenção do Grau de Mestre em Engenharia InformáticaThe digital IPTV service has evolved in terms of features, technology and accessibility of their contents. However, the rapid evolution of features and services has brought a more complex offering to customers, which often are not enjoyed or even perceived. Therefore, it is important to measure the real advantage of those features and understand how they are used by customers. In this work, we present a strategy that deals directly with the real IPTV data, which result from the interaction actions with the set-top boxes by customers. But this data has a very low granularity level, which is complex and difficult to interpret. The approach is to transform the clicking actions to a more conceptual and representative level of the running activities. Furthermore, there is a significant reduction in the data cardinality, enhanced in terms of information quality. More than a transformation, this approach aims to be iterative, where at each level, we achieve a more accurate information, in order to characterize a particular behaviour. As experimental results, we present some application areas regarding the main offered features in this digital service. In particular, is made a study about zapping behaviour, and also an evaluation about DVR service usage. It is also discussed the possibility to integrate the strategy devised in a particular carrier, aiming to analyse the consumption rate of their services, in order to adjust them to customer real usage profile, and also to study the feasibility of new services introduction
