    Developing a MovieBrowser for supporting analysis and browsing of movie content

    There is a growing awareness of the importance of system evaluation directly with end-users in realistic environments, and as a result some novel applications have been deployed to the real world and evaluated in trial contexts. While this is certainly a desirable trend to relate a technical system to a real user-oriented perspective, most of these efforts do not involve end-user participation right from the start of the development, but only after deploying it. In this paper we describe our research in designing, deploying and assessing the impact of a web-based tool that incorporates multimedia techniques to support movie analysis and browsing for students of film studies. From the very start and throughout the development we utilize methodologies from usability engineering in order to feed in end-user needs and thus tailoring the underlying technical system to those needs. Starting by capturing real users’ current practices and matching them to the available technical elements of the system, we deployed an initial version of our system to University classes for a semester during which we obtained an extensive amount of rich usage data. We describe the process and some of the findings from this trial

    In this article we claim that the linguistic-centered view within hypermedia systems needs refinement through a semiotic-based approach before real interoperation between media can be achieved. We discuss the problems of visual signification for images and video in dynamic systems, in which users can access visual material in a non-linear fashion. We describe how semiotics can help overcome such problems, by allowing descriptions of the material on both denotative and connotative levels. Finally we propose an architecture for a dynamic semiotic-aware hypermedia system

    LookOut! Interactive Camera Gimbal Controller for Filming Long Takes

    The job of a camera operator is more challenging, and potentially dangerous, when filming long moving camera shots. Broadly, the operator must keep the actors in-frame while safely navigating around obstacles, and while fulfilling an artistic vision. We propose a unified hardware and software system that distributes some of the camera operator's burden, freeing them up to focus on safety and aesthetics during a take. Our real-time system provides a solo operator with end-to-end control, so they can balance on-set responsiveness to action vs planned storyboards and framing, while looking where they're going. By default, we film without a field monitor. Our LookOut system is built around a lightweight commodity camera gimbal mechanism, with heavy modifications to the controller, which would normally just provide active stabilization. Our control algorithm reacts to speech commands, video, and a pre-made script. Specifically, our automatic monitoring of the live video feed saves the operator from distractions. In pre-production, an artist uses our GUI to design a sequence of high-level camera "behaviors." Those can be specific, based on a storyboard, or looser objectives, such as "frame both actors." Then during filming, a machine-readable script, exported from the GUI, ties together with the sensor readings to drive the gimbal. To validate our algorithm, we compared tracking strategies, interfaces, and hardware protocols, and collected impressions from a) film-makers who used all aspects of our system, and b) film-makers who watched footage filmed using LookOut.Comment: V2: - Fixed typos. - Cleaner supplemental. - New plot in control section with same data from a supplemental vide

    Indian Monuments Classification using Support Vector Machine

    Recently, Content-Based Image Retrieval is a widely popular and efficient searching and indexing approach used by knowledge seekers. Use of images by e-commerce sites, by product and by service industries is not new nowadays. Travel and tourism are the largest service industries in India. Every year people visit tourist places and upload pictures of their visit on social networking sites or share via the mobile device with friends and relatives. Classification of the monuments is helpful to hoteliers for the development of a new hotel with state of the art amenities, to travel service providers, to restaurant owners, to government agencies for security, etc.. The proposed system had extracted features and classified the Indian monuments visited by the tourists based on the linear Support Vector Machine (SVM). The proposed system was divided into 3 main phases: preprocessing, feature vector creation and classification. The extracted features are based on Local Binary Pattern, Histogram, Co-occurrence Matrix and Canny Edge Detection methods.  Once the feature vector had been constructed, classification was   performed using Linear SVM. The Database of 10 popular Indian monuments was generated with 50 images for each class. The proposed system is implemented in MATLAB and achieves very high accuracy. The proposed system was also tested on other popular benchmark databases
