Authorship Identification of Li Qingzhao’s Anthology: A Computational Approach

    Get PDF
Li Qingzhao is one of China’s most famous pre-modern female poets. She is said to have read and composed thousands of poems. However, today, her entire anthology only contains less than one hundred separate works and many of these poems entered her collection several hundred years after her death. There is good reason to speculate that some of the works attributed to Li Qingzhao were written by people imitating her work. This thesis explores the authorship of Li Qingzhao’s anthology by using computational techniques and discusses their implications and significance. Some of the computational devices include bag of words and other similarity finding techniques. Although many of these tests are interesting, there are many limitations and issues with using these to explore authorship. The goal of this thesis is to explore computation\u27s role in authorship determination, and the significance of that authorship

'Out in the Dark': An Exploration of and Creative Response to the Process of Poetic Composition with Reference to Edward Thomas and a Self-reflexive Study

    Get PDF
Research through practice into the actual process of composing, such as William James on automatic writing and thought processes, or Sigmund Freud on creative writing and the unconscious, is rare, and needs extension and updating. This study builds a new theoretical framework for critical and practical work on imaginative composition by investigation of Edward Thomas's composing processes and complementary analysis of the processes of writing my own poetry collection. Thomas's emphasis on fragmentation of thought, hesitancy and silence in the content and form of his poetry, positioning him on the borders of Modernism, reflects essential aspects of his composing processes, as documented in his notes, letters, prose and poetry. The creating and revisiting of my own works-in-progress and final collection, in the light of the study of Thomas and in dialogue with readers, reveals further insights into poetic composition. Chapter One examines the point at which poems emerge and the influence of external writing conditions. Chapters Two and Three look at absence in the composing process in ellipses, aporia, gaps and unfinishedness, and in the art of submission as it is used in composing. Chapter Four investigates distraction, non-logical connections and physical and temporal disturbances in composing. Chapter Five shows the importance when composing of sustaining a flexible and exact attention to immediate perceptions and thoughts. The thesis concludes with an original poetry collection resulting from the documentation of my composing processes during the research period. These poems reflect and refract many points made in previous chapters, offering practical evidence of them. The principles of poetic composition established in this thesis are also more generally applicable to the composing of poetry. Similarities observed in composition processes in other art forms and in the writing of this thesis indicate that these principles also apply to other creative and academic disciplines, providing areas for further research

A conjecture of singing chinese in italian

    Get PDF
This research intends to show how Chinese contemporary vocal works can be sung with the western lyrical singing technique, focusing on the pronunciation of the Italian language: The way of dealing with Chinese vowels and consonants in the pronunciation of articulation refers to the rules/principles of that presented in Italian language. The subject was inspired by Dr. A. Hirt’s lecture about singing English like Italians in 2011. In terms of rationality, to convey a sense yet also to approach the maximization of the rules of phonation (vowels) and articulation (consonants), researchers hypothesize that Chinese language (Mandarin) can be pronounced like the Italian language but in the setting of singing. This study will take into consideration from pieces of literature about singing technique to teaching, from viewpoints about articulation (in singing) of performers, to recordings and videos. We Believe it’s necessary to import(impart) knowledge about the singing of Chinese phonetics and linguistics, compared to Italian, the most traditional language for singing and the original language of a considerable number of masterpieces on what regards vocal repertoire, since they have been evolving from two completely families of languages
