    ConXsense - Automated Context Classification for Context-Aware Access Control

    We present ConXsense, the first framework for context-aware access control on mobile devices based on context classification. Previous context-aware access control systems often require users to laboriously specify detailed policies or they rely on pre-defined policies not adequately reflecting the true preferences of users. We present the design and implementation of a context-aware framework that uses a probabilistic approach to overcome these deficiencies. The framework utilizes context sensing and machine learning to automatically classify contexts according to their security and privacy-related properties. We apply the framework to two important smartphone-related use cases: protection against device misuse using a dynamic device lock and protection against sensory malware. We ground our analysis on a sociological survey examining the perceptions and concerns of users related to contextual smartphone security and analyze the effectiveness of our approach with real-world context data. We also demonstrate the integration of our framework with the FlaskDroid architecture for fine-grained access control enforcement on the Android platform.Comment: Recipient of the Best Paper Awar

    Systematic review of smartphone-based passive sensing for health and wellbeing

    OBJECTIVE: To review published empirical literature on the use of smartphone-based passive sensing for health and wellbeing. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A systematic review of the English language literature was performed following PRISMA guidelines. Papers indexed in computing, technology, and medical databases were included if they were empirical, focused on health and/or wellbeing, involved the collection of data via smartphones, and described the utilized technology as passive or requiring minimal user interaction. RESULTS: Thirty-five papers were included in the review. Studies were performed around the world, with samples of up to 171 (median n = 15) representing individuals with bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, depression, older adults, and the general population. The majority of studies used the Android operating system and an array of smartphone sensors, most frequently capturing accelerometry, location, audio, and usage data. Captured data were usually sent to a remote server for processing but were shared with participants in only 40% of studies. Reported benefits of passive sensing included accurately detecting changes in status, behavior change through feedback, and increased accountability in participants. Studies reported facing technical, methodological, and privacy challenges. DISCUSSION: Studies in the nascent area of smartphone-based passive sensing for health and wellbeing demonstrate promise and invite continued research and investment. Existing studies suffer from weaknesses in research design, lack of feedback and clinical integration, and inadequate attention to privacy issues. Key recommendations relate to developing passive sensing strategies matching the problem at hand, using personalized interventions, and addressing methodological and privacy challenges. CONCLUSION: As evolving passive sensing technology presents new possibilities for health and wellbeing, additional research must address methodological, clinical integration, and privacy issues. Doing so depends on interdisciplinary collaboration between informatics and clinical experts

    Leveraging The Potential Of Personality Traits For Digital Health Interventions : A Literature Review On Digital Markers For Conscientiousness And Neurotism

    Digital health interventions (DHIs) are designed to help individuals manage their disease, such as asthma, diabetes, or major depression. While there is a broad body of literature on how to design evidence- based DHIs with respect to behavioral theories, behavior change techniques or various design features, targeting personality traits has been neglected so far in DHI designs, although there is evidence of their impact on health. In particular, conscientiousness, which is related to therapy adherence, and neuroticism, which impacts long-term health of chronic patients, are two personality traits with an impact on health. Sensing these traits via digital markers from online and smartphone data sources and providing corresponding personality change interventions, i.e. to increase conscientiousness and to reduce neuroticism, may be an important active and generic ingredient for various DHIs. As a first step towards this novel class of personality change DHIs, we conducted a systematic literature review on relevant digital markers related to conscientiousness and neuroticism. Overall, 344 articles were reviewed and 21 were selected for further analysis. We found various digital markers for conscientiousness and neuroticism and discuss them with respect to future work, i.e. the design and evaluation of personality change DHIs

    Using artificial intelligence and longitudinal location data to differentiate persons who develop posttraumatic stress disorder following childhood trauma

    Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is characterized by complex, heterogeneous symptomology, thus detection outside traditional clinical contexts is difficult. Fortunately, advances in mobile technology, passive sensing, and analytics offer promising avenues for research and development. The present study examined the ability to utilize Global Positioning System (GPS) data, derived passively from a smartphone across seven days, to detect PTSD diagnostic status among a cohort (N = 185) of high-risk, previously traumatized women. Using daily time spent away and maximum distance traveled from home as a basis for model feature engineering, the results suggested that diagnostic group status can be predicted out-of-fold with high performance (AUC = 0.816, balanced sensitivity = 0.743, balanced specificity = 0.8, balanced accuracy = 0.771). Results further implicate the potential utility of GPS information as a digital biomarker of the PTSD behavioral repertoire. Future PTSD research will benefit from application of GPS data within larger, more diverse populations

    Use of nonintrusive sensor-based information and communication technology for real-world evidence for clinical trials in dementia

    Cognitive function is an important end point of treatments in dementia clinical trials. Measuring cognitive function by standardized tests, however, is biased toward highly constrained environments (such as hospitals) in selected samples. Patient-powered real-world evidence using information and communication technology devices, including environmental and wearable sensors, may help to overcome these limitations. This position paper describes current and novel information and communication technology devices and algorithms to monitor behavior and function in people with prodromal and manifest stages of dementia continuously, and discusses clinical, technological, ethical, regulatory, and user-centered requirements for collecting real-world evidence in future randomized controlled trials. Challenges of data safety, quality, and privacy and regulatory requirements need to be addressed by future smart sensor technologies. When these requirements are satisfied, these technologies will provide access to truly user relevant outcomes and broader cohorts of participants than currently sampled in clinical trials

    Unobtrusive Recognition of Personality Traits with Health Impact: A Literature Review with a Focus on Conscientiousness and Neuroticism

    Non communicable diseases (NCDs) impose the greatest burden on global health. Any technology that helps making treatment more effective or efficient can potentially benefit humanity at a grand scale. Health information technology (HIT) has been identified as offering such potential, and indeed, existing HIT-based interventions are targeting NCD-related specific diseases such as diabetes, asthma, or mental illness. Rather generic determinants impacting health outcomes are the personality traits conscientiousness and neuroticism. We argue in this article that HIT-based interventions can benefit from an unobtrusive recognition of conscientiousness and neuroticism, both for tailoring interventions and for the adaptation of these traits. We conducted a systematic literature review to identify relevant behavioral features representing conscientiousness and neuroticism. Overall, 17 out of 262 articles have been found to be relevant for this purpose. We found that for conscientiousness, features relating to media consumption (video) and creation (photo) were highly relevant, as well as features related to communication style (use of negations), and features relating to the behavior of social contacts and variety of balancedness of relationships. For neuroticism, we found that features relating to the use of words of certain classes (religion, hearing) were particularly relevant, as well as variation in message length across contacts, and communication style (use of exclamation marks). This work concludes with an outlook on future research

    Predicting Personality Traits Using Smartphone Sensor Data and App Usage Data

    Human behavior is complex -- often defying explanation using traditional mathematical models. To simplify modeling, researchers often create intermediate psychological models to capture aspects of human behavior. These intermediate forms, such as those gleaned from personality inventories, are typically validated using standard survey instruments, and often correlate with behavior. Typically these constructs are used to predict stylized aspects of behavior. Novel sensing systems have made tracking behavior possible with unprecedented fidelity, posing the question as to whether the inverse process is possible: that is, inferring psychological constructs for individuals from behavioral data. Modern smartphones contain an array of sensors which can be filtered, combined, and analyzed to provide abstract measures of human behavior. Being able to extract a personal profile or personality type from data directly obtainable from a mobile phone without participant interaction could have applications for marketing or for initiating social or health interventions. In this work, we attempt to model a particularly salient and well-established personality inventory, the Big Five framework. Daily routines of participants were measured from parameters readily available from smartphones and supervised machine learning was used to create a model from that data. Cross validation-based evaluation demonstrated that the root mean squared error was sufficiently small to make actionable predictions about a person's personality from smartphone logs, but the model performed poorly for personality outliers
