Surface Reconstruction from Unorganized Point Cloud Data via Progressive Local Mesh Matching
This thesis presents an integrated triangle mesh processing framework for surface reconstruction based on Delaunay triangulation. It features an innovative multi-level inheritance priority queuing mechanism for seeking and updating the optimum local manifold mesh at each data point. The proposed algorithms aim at generating a watertight triangle mesh interpolating all the input points data when all the fully matched local manifold meshes (umbrellas) are found. Compared to existing reconstruction algorithms, the proposed algorithms can automatically reconstruct watertight interpolation triangle mesh without additional hole-filling or manifold post-processing. The resulting surface can effectively recover the sharp features in the scanned physical object and capture their correct topology and geometric shapes reliably. The main Umbrella Facet Matching (UFM) algorithm and its two extended algorithms are documented in detail in the thesis. The UFM algorithm accomplishes and implements the core surface reconstruction framework based on a multi-level inheritance priority queuing mechanism according to the progressive matching results of local meshes. The first extended algorithm presents a new normal vector combinatorial estimation method for point cloud data depending on local mesh matching results, which is benefit to sharp features reconstruction. The second extended algorithm addresses the sharp-feature preservation issue in surface reconstruction by the proposed normal vector cone (NVC) filtering. The effectiveness of these algorithms has been demonstrated using both simulated and real-world point cloud data sets. For each algorithm, multiple case studies are performed and analyzed to validate its performance
Computerized Analysis of Magnetic Resonance Images to Study Cerebral Anatomy in Developing Neonates
The study of cerebral anatomy in developing neonates is of great importance for
the understanding of brain development during the early period of life. This
dissertation therefore focuses on three challenges in the modelling of cerebral
anatomy in neonates during brain development. The methods that have been
developed all use Magnetic Resonance Images (MRI) as source data.
To facilitate study of vascular development in the neonatal period, a set of image
analysis algorithms are developed to automatically extract and model cerebral
vessel trees. The whole process consists of cerebral vessel tracking from
automatically placed seed points, vessel tree generation, and vasculature
registration and matching. These algorithms have been tested on clinical Time-of-
Flight (TOF) MR angiographic datasets.
To facilitate study of the neonatal cortex a complete cerebral cortex segmentation
and reconstruction pipeline has been developed. Segmentation of the neonatal
cortex is not effectively done by existing algorithms designed for the adult brain
because the contrast between grey and white matter is reversed. This causes pixels
containing tissue mixtures to be incorrectly labelled by conventional methods. The
neonatal cortical segmentation method that has been developed is based on a novel
expectation-maximization (EM) method with explicit correction for mislabelled
partial volume voxels. Based on the resulting cortical segmentation, an implicit
surface evolution technique is adopted for the reconstruction of the cortex in
neonates. The performance of the method is investigated by performing a detailed
landmark study.
To facilitate study of cortical development, a cortical surface registration algorithm
for aligning the cortical surface is developed. The method first inflates extracted
cortical surfaces and then performs a non-rigid surface registration using free-form
deformations (FFDs) to remove residual alignment. Validation experiments using
data labelled by an expert observer demonstrate that the method can capture local
changes and follow the growth of specific sulcus
A framework for hull form reverse engineering and geometry integration into numerical simulations
The thesis presents a ship hull form specific reverse engineering and CAD integration framework. The reverse engineering part proposes three alternative suitable reconstruction approaches namely curves network, direct surface fitting, and triangulated surface reconstruction. The CAD integration part includes surface healing, region identification, and domain preparation strategies which used to adapt the CAD model to downstream application requirements. In general, the developed framework bridges a point cloud and a CAD model obtained from IGES and STL file into downstream applications
Felix:A Topology Based Framework for Visual Exploration of Cosmic Filaments
The large-scale structure of the universe is comprised of virialized blob-like clusters, linear filaments, sheet-like walls and huge near empty three-dimensional voids. Characterizing the large scale universe is essential to our understanding of the formation and evolution of galaxies. The density range of clusters, walls and voids are relatively well separated, when compared to filaments, which span a relatively larger range. The large scale filamentary network thus forms an intricate part of the cosmic web. In this paper, we describe Felix, a topology based framework for visual exploration of filaments in the cosmic web. The filamentary structure is represented by the ascending manifold geometry of the 2-saddles in the Morse-Smale complex of the density field. We generate a hierarchy of Morse-Smale complexes and query for filaments based on the density ranges at the end points of the filaments. The query is processed efficiently over the entire hierarchical Morse-Smale complex, allowing for interactive visualization. We apply Felix to computer simulations based on the heuristic Voronoi kinematic model and the standard LCDM cosmology, and demonstrate its usefulness through two case studies. First, we extract cosmic filaments within and across cluster like regions in Voronoi kinematic simulation datasets. We demonstrate that we produce similar results to existing structure finders. Second, we extract different classes of filaments based on their density characteristics from the LCDM simulation datasets. Filaments that form the spine of the cosmic web, which exist in high density regions in the current epoch, are isolated using Felix. Also, filaments present in void-like regions are isolated and visualized. These filamentary structures are often over shadowed by higher density range filaments and are not easily characterizable and extractable using other filament extraction methodologies
Past, Present, and Future of Simultaneous Localization And Mapping: Towards the Robust-Perception Age
Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM)consists in the concurrent
construction of a model of the environment (the map), and the estimation of the
state of the robot moving within it. The SLAM community has made astonishing
progress over the last 30 years, enabling large-scale real-world applications,
and witnessing a steady transition of this technology to industry. We survey
the current state of SLAM. We start by presenting what is now the de-facto
standard formulation for SLAM. We then review related work, covering a broad
set of topics including robustness and scalability in long-term mapping, metric
and semantic representations for mapping, theoretical performance guarantees,
active SLAM and exploration, and other new frontiers. This paper simultaneously
serves as a position paper and tutorial to those who are users of SLAM. By
looking at the published research with a critical eye, we delineate open
challenges and new research issues, that still deserve careful scientific
investigation. The paper also contains the authors' take on two questions that
often animate discussions during robotics conferences: Do robots need SLAM? and
Is SLAM solved
Strokes2Surface: Recovering Curve Networks From 4D Architectural Design Sketches
We present Strokes2Surface, an offline geometry reconstruction pipeline that
recovers well-connected curve networks from imprecise 4D sketches to bridge
concept design and digital modeling stages in architectural design. The input
to our pipeline consists of 3D strokes' polyline vertices and their timestamps
as the 4th dimension, along with additional metadata recorded throughout
sketching. Inspired by architectural sketching practices, our pipeline combines
a classifier and two clustering models to achieve its goal. First, with a set
of extracted hand-engineered features from the sketch, the classifier
recognizes the type of individual strokes between those depicting boundaries
(Shape strokes) and those depicting enclosed areas (Scribble strokes). Next,
the two clustering models parse strokes of each type into distinct groups, each
representing an individual edge or face of the intended architectural object.
Curve networks are then formed through topology recovery of consolidated Shape
clusters and surfaced using Scribble clusters guiding the cycle discovery. Our
evaluation is threefold: We confirm the usability of the Strokes2Surface
pipeline in architectural design use cases via a user study, we validate our
choice of features via statistical analysis and ablation studies on our
collected dataset, and we compare our outputs against a range of
reconstructions computed using alternative methods.Comment: 15 pages, 14 figure
A survey on rotation optimization in structure from motion
We consider the problem of robust rotation optimization
in Structure from Motion applications. A number of different
approaches have been recently proposed, with solutions that
are at times incompatible, and at times complementary. The
goal of this paper is to survey and compare these ideas in a
unified manner, and to benchmark their robustness against
the presence of outliers. In all, we have tested more than
forty variants of a these methods (including novel ones), and

A Unified Surface Geometric Framework for Feature-Aware Denoising, Hole Filling and Context-Aware Completion
Technologies for 3D data acquisition and 3D printing have enormously developed in the past few years, and, consequently, the demand for 3D virtual twins of the original scanned objects has increased. In this context, feature-aware denoising, hole filling and context-aware completion are three essential (but far from trivial) tasks. In this work, they are integrated within a geometric framework and realized through a unified variational model aiming at recovering triangulated surfaces from scanned, damaged and possibly incomplete noisy observations. The underlying non-convex optimization problem incorporates two regularisation terms: a discrete approximation of the Willmore energy forcing local sphericity and suited for the recovery of rounded features, and an approximation of the l(0) pseudo-norm penalty favouring sparsity in the normal variation. The proposed numerical method solving the model is parameterization-free, avoids expensive implicit volumebased computations and based on the efficient use of the Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers. Experiments show how the proposed framework can provide a robust and elegant solution suited for accurate restorations even in the presence of severe random noise and large damaged areas
