We thank MENSI and REALVIZ companies for their helpful comments and the following people for providing us images from their works: Francesca De Domenico (Fig. 1), Kyung-Tae Kim (Fig. 9). The CMN (French national center of patrimony buildings) is also acknowledged for the opportunity given to demonstrate our approach on the Hotel de Sully in Paris. We thank Tudor Driscu for his help on the English translation. This article presents a set of theoretical reflections and technical demonstrations that constitute a new methodological base for the architectural surveying and representation using computer graphics techniques. The problem we treated relates to three distinct concerns: the surveying of architectural objects, the construction and the semantic enrichment of their geometrical models, and their handling for the extraction of dimensional information. A hybrid approach to 3D reconstruction is described. This new approach combines range-based modeling and image-based modeling techniques; it integrates the concept of architectural feature-based modeling. To develop this concept set up a first process of extraction and formalization of architectural knowledge based on the analysis of architectural treaties is carried on. Then, the identified features are used to produce a template shape library. Finally the problem of the overall model structure and organization is addressed

A machine learning approach for layout inference in spreadsheets

Spreadsheet applications are one of the most used tools for content generation and presentation in industry and the Web. In spite of this success, there does not exist a comprehensive approach to automatically extract and reuse the richness of data maintained in this format. The biggest obstacle is the lack of awareness about the structure of the data in spreadsheets, which otherwise could provide the means to automatically understand and extract knowledge from these files. In this paper, we propose a classification approach to discover the layout of tables in spreadsheets. Therefore, we focus on the cell level, considering a wide range of features not covered before by related work. We evaluated the performance of our classifiers on a large dataset covering three different corpora from various domains. Finally, our work includes a novel technique for detecting and repairing incorrectly classified cells in a post-processing step. The experimental results show that our approach deliver s very high accuracy bringing us a crucial step closer towards automatic table extraction.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

    System architectures for telerobotic research

    Get PDF
Several activities are performed related to the definition and creation of telerobotic systems. The effort and investment required to create architectures for these complex systems can be enormous; however, the magnitude of process can be reduced if structured design techniques are applied. A number of informal methodologies supporting certain aspects of the design process are available. More recently, prototypes of integrated tools supporting all phases of system design from requirements analysis to code generation and hardware layout have begun to appear. Activities related to system architecture of telerobots are described, including current activities which are designed to provide a methodology for the comparison and quantitative analysis of alternative system architectures
