    Rights on news : expanding copyright on the internet

Legacy news organisations, publishers of newspapers, have moved to the internet. In the online news environment, however, they are no longer the exclusive suppliers of news. New digital intermediaries have emerged, search engines and news aggregators in particular. They select and display links and fragments of press publishers’ content as a part of their services, without seeking the news organisations’ prior consent. To shield themselves from exploitation by digital intermediaries, press publishers have begun to seek legal protection, and called for the introduction of a new right under the umbrella of copyright and related rights. Following these calls, the press publishers’ right was introduced into the EU copyright framework by the Directive on Copyright in the Digital Single Market in 2019

    Supporting the executability of R markdown files

    R Markdown files are examples of literate programming documents that combine R code with results and explanations. Such dynamic documents are designed to execute easily and reproduce study results. However, little is known about the executability of R Markdown files which can cause frustration among its users who intend to reuse the document. This thesis aims to understand the executability of R Markdown files and improve the current state of supporting the executability of those files. Towards this direction, a large-scale study has been conducted on the executability of R Markdown files collected from GitHub repositories. Results from the study show that a significant number of R Markdown files (64.95%) are not executable, even after our best efforts. To better understand the challenges, the exceptions encountered while executing the files are categorized into different categories and a classifier is developed to determine which Markdown files are likely to be executable. Such a classifier can be utilized by search engines in their ranking which helps developers to find literate programming documents as learning resources. To support the executability of R Markdown files a command-line tool is developed. Such a tool can find issues in R Markdown files that prevent the executability of those files. Using an R Markdown file as an input, the tool generates an intuitive list of outputs that assist developers in identifying areas that require attention to ensure the executability of the file. The tool not only utilizes static analysis of source code but also uses a carefully crafted knowledge base of package dependencies to generate version constraints of involved packages and a Satisfiability Modulo Theories (SMT) solver (i.e., Z3) to identify compatible versions of those packages.     Global markets are currently immersed in two all-encompassing and unstoppable processes: internationalization and globalization. While the former pushes companies to look beyond the borders of their country of origin to forge relationships with foreign trading partners, the latter fosters the standardization in all countries, by reducing spatiotemporal distances and breaking down geographical, political, economic and socio-cultural barriers. In recent decades, another domain has appeared to propel these unifying drives: Artificial Intelligence, together with its high technologies aiming to implement human cognitive abilities in machinery. The “Language Toolkit – Le lingue straniere al servizio dell’internazionalizzazione dell’impresa” project, promoted by the Department of Interpreting and Translation (Forlì Campus) in collaboration with the Romagna Chamber of Commerce (Forlì-Cesena and Rimini), seeks to help Italian SMEs make their way into the global market. It is precisely within this project that this dissertation has been conceived. Indeed, its purpose is to present the translation and localization project from English into Chinese of a series of texts produced by Bioretics© S.r.l.: an investor deck, the company website and part of the installation and use manual of the Aliquis© framework software, its flagship product. This dissertation is structured as follows: Chapter 1 presents the project and the company in detail; Chapter 2 outlines the internationalization and globalization processes and the Artificial Intelligence market both in Italy and in China; Chapter 3 provides the theoretical foundations for every aspect related to Specialized Translation, including website localization; Chapter 4 describes the resources and tools used to perform the translations; Chapter 5 proposes an analysis of the source texts; Chapter 6 is a commentary on translation strategies and choices

    Design and Implementation of a Portable Framework for Application Decomposition and Deployment in Edge-Cloud Systems

    The emergence of cyber-physical systems has brought about a significant increase in complexity and heterogeneity in the infrastructure on which these systems are deployed. One particular example of this complexity is the interplay between cloud, fog, and edge computing. However, the complexity of these systems can pose challenges when it comes to implementing self-organizing mechanisms, which are often designed to work on flat networks. Therefore, it is essential to separate the application logic from the specific deployment aspects to promote reusability and flexibility in infrastructure exploitation. To address this issue, a novel approach called "pulverization" has been proposed. This approach involves breaking down the system into smaller computational units, which can then be deployed on the available infrastructure. In this thesis, the design and implementation of a portable framework that enables the "pulverization" of cyber-physical systems are presented. The main objective of the framework is to pave the way for the deployment of cyber-physical systems in the edge-cloud continuum by reducing the complexity of the infrastructure and exploit opportunistically the heterogeneous resources available on it. Different scenarios are presented to highlight the effectiveness of the framework in different heterogeneous infrastructures and devices. Current limitations and future work are examined to identify improvement areas for the framework

    Personality-Driven Social Media Curation: How Personality Traits Affect Following Decisions on Twitter

    As social media occupies an increasingly important place in people’s lives, new opportunities are presented for people to select and modify their online environments. On many platforms, users have significant control over what kind of information and experiences they are exposed to. For example, on Twitter, virtually everything users see is a function of their decisions about what accounts to follow. What drives those decisions? My dissertation explores the extent to which personality is reflected in our social media environment by examining the relationship between personality traits and the accounts that users follow on Twitter. Particularly, what features of accounts influence following decisions and how personality traits of users align with characteristics of Twitter accounts. Exploring the relationship between who we are and the decisions we make online provides a better understanding of how characteristics, such as personality traits, drive the curation of our social environments. Overall, findings indicate that personality does influence the decisions we make about which Twitter accounts to follow and in turn, how our social media environment is curated. The strength and stability of this relationship shows some heterogeneity across traits, though is generally comparable to the effect of some commonly used demographic variables. Personality traits of users also align with characteristics of Twitter accounts and moderate the effect of different Twitter profile features on our following decisions, highlighting potential psychological processes that drive following decisions. For example, extraverts want to feel connected to popular accounts and seek content on topics that lots of other people care about while Neuroticism is associated with following accounts that conform to gender and age norms. Perhaps most notably, these relationships demonstrate remarkable generalizability when tested on a set of real-world followed accounts. Though this research is a first step in exploring the influence of personality on the vast number behaviors that occur on social media, these findings establish foundational knowledge and inform future research

    A Comprehensive Survey of Artificial Intelligence Techniques for Talent Analytics

    In today's competitive and fast-evolving business environment, it is a critical time for organizations to rethink how to make talent-related decisions in a quantitative manner. Indeed, the recent development of Big Data and Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques have revolutionized human resource management. The availability of large-scale talent and management-related data provides unparalleled opportunities for business leaders to comprehend organizational behaviors and gain tangible knowledge from a data science perspective, which in turn delivers intelligence for real-time decision-making and effective talent management at work for their organizations. In the last decade, talent analytics has emerged as a promising field in applied data science for human resource management, garnering significant attention from AI communities and inspiring numerous research efforts. To this end, we present an up-to-date and comprehensive survey on AI technologies used for talent analytics in the field of human resource management. Specifically, we first provide the background knowledge of talent analytics and categorize various pertinent data. Subsequently, we offer a comprehensive taxonomy of relevant research efforts, categorized based on three distinct application-driven scenarios: talent management, organization management, and labor market analysis. In conclusion, we summarize the open challenges and potential prospects for future research directions in the domain of AI-driven talent analytics.Comment: 30 pages, 15 figure

    Implementation of ISO Frameworks to Risk Management in IPv6 Security

    The Internet of Things is a technology wave sweeping across various industries and sectors. It promises to improve productivity and efficiency by providing new services and data to users. However, the full potential of this technology is still not realized due to the transition to IPv6 as a backbone. Despite the security assurances that IPv6 provides, privacy and concerns about the Internet of Things remain. This is why it is important that organizations thoroughly understand the protocol and its migration to ensure that they are equipped to take advantage of its many benefits. Due to the lack of available IPv4 addresses, organizations are in an uncertain situation when it comes to implementing IoT technologies. The other aim is to fill in the gaps left by the ISO to identify and classify the risks that are not yet apparent. The thesis seeks to establish and implement the use of ISO to manage risks. It will also help to align security efforts with organizational goals. The proposed solution is evaluated through a survey that is designed to gather feedback from various levels of security and risk management professionals. The suggested modifications are also included in the study. A survey on the implementation of ISO frameworks to risk management in IPv6 was conducted and with results as shown in the random sampling technique that was used for conducting the research a total of 75 questionnaires were shared online, 50 respondents returned responses online through emails and social media platforms. The result of the analysis shows that system admin has the highest pooling 26% of all the overall participants, followed by network admin with 20%, then cybersecurity specialists with 16%. 14% of the respondents were network architects while senior management and risk management professionals were 4% and 2% respectively. The majority of the respondents agreed that risk treatment enhances the risk management performance of the IPv6 network resulting from the proper selection and implementation of correct risk prevention strategies

    Towards A Practical High-Assurance Systems Programming Language

    Writing correct and performant low-level systems code is a notoriously demanding job, even for experienced developers. To make the matter worse, formally reasoning about their correctness properties introduces yet another level of complexity to the task. It requires considerable expertise in both systems programming and formal verification. The development can be extremely costly due to the sheer complexity of the systems and the nuances in them, if not assisted with appropriate tools that provide abstraction and automation. Cogent is designed to alleviate the burden on developers when writing and verifying systems code. It is a high-level functional language with a certifying compiler, which automatically proves the correctness of the compiled code and also provides a purely functional abstraction of the low-level program to the developer. Equational reasoning techniques can then be used to prove functional correctness properties of the program on top of this abstract semantics, which is notably less laborious than directly verifying the C code. To make Cogent a more approachable and effective tool for developing real-world systems, we further strengthen the framework by extending the core language and its ecosystem. Specifically, we enrich the language to allow users to control the memory representation of algebraic data types, while retaining the automatic proof with a data layout refinement calculus. We repurpose existing tools in a novel way and develop an intuitive foreign function interface, which provides users a seamless experience when using Cogent in conjunction with native C. We augment the Cogent ecosystem with a property-based testing framework, which helps developers better understand the impact formal verification has on their programs and enables a progressive approach to producing high-assurance systems. Finally we explore refinement type systems, which we plan to incorporate into Cogent for more expressiveness and better integration of systems programmers with the verification process

    Beam scanning by liquid-crystal biasing in a modified SIW structure

    A fixed-frequency beam-scanning 1D antenna based on Liquid Crystals (LCs) is designed for application in 2D scanning with lateral alignment. The 2D array environment imposes full decoupling of adjacent 1D antennas, which often conflicts with the LC requirement of DC biasing: the proposed design accommodates both. The LC medium is placed inside a Substrate Integrated Waveguide (SIW) modified to work as a Groove Gap Waveguide, with radiating slots etched on the upper broad wall, that radiates as a Leaky-Wave Antenna (LWA). This allows effective application of the DC bias voltage needed for tuning the LCs. At the same time, the RF field remains laterally confined, enabling the possibility to lay several antennas in parallel and achieve 2D beam scanning. The design is validated by simulation employing the actual properties of a commercial LC medium
