    Untangling hotel industry’s inefficiency: An SFA approach applied to a renowned Portuguese hotel chain

    The present paper explores the technical efficiency of four hotels from Teixeira Duarte Group - a renowned Portuguese hotel chain. An efficiency ranking is established from these four hotel units located in Portugal using Stochastic Frontier Analysis. This methodology allows to discriminate between measurement error and systematic inefficiencies in the estimation process enabling to investigate the main inefficiency causes.     Spatial processes in environmental economics: empirics and theory

    Economic activities are fundamentally influenced by their location in space, which determines the physical and natural environment in which they take place. Likewise, location defines the social context of economic activity prescribing the particular laws, regulations and social norms to which it should conform. Moreover, spatial location defines proximity, which shapes the costs of accessing factor inputs, product markets and other economic and social institutions. In fact, spatial location mediates most forms of interaction, intended and unintended, that may arise from communication and connections between economic agents. These spatial processes have important implications for estimation, policy evaluation and prediction in models of economic activity. This thesis is comprised of two parts. Part I presents a broad range of issues that arise in estimation due to space and frames these as general spatial omitted variables. I explore the use of semi-parametric estimators to identify the parameters of interest in this general model and derive identification conditions for fixed and local adaptive spatial smoothing estimators. The properties of these estimators are contrasted to OLS and spatial econometric estimators. Part II addresses issues in policy evaluation and prediction. I derive an equilibrium sorting model with endogenous tenure choice that can be used to evaluate the general equilibrium welfare effects of policies that affect local environmental quality. Using a series of simulations, motivated by a real world policy application, I contrast the welfare changes derived under this model to a conventional static approach. By allowing for rental and purchase markets the model I develop provides a far richer characterisation of the complex adjustments that propagate through the property market following policy changes and the contrary impact such policies can have upon renters and owners. The usefulness of the model for applied policy analysis is demonstrated through two applications: The Polegate Bypass and Mortgage Interest Deduction reform

Of the 50 papers presented , 26 were selected for publication, in such a way as to strike a balance between theory and application of regional systems analysis. The book is divided into seven parts. After an introduction, the second and third parts contain overviews of current modelling practice and planned economies. In the next two parts, the focus shifts to the theoretical problems encountered in structural and multi-objective analysis of regional systems. The final two sections contain examples of regional development models currently ready for use or in operation and analyze the success of these models in clarifying regional planning and policy problems

    Disruption analytics in urban metro systems with large-scale automated data

    Urban metro systems are frequently affected by disruptions such as infrastructure malfunctions, rolling stock breakdowns and accidents. Such disruptions give rise to delays, congestion and inconvenience for public transport users, which in turn, lead to a wider range of negative impacts on the social economy and wellbeing. This PhD thesis aims to improve our understanding of disruption impacts and improve the ability of metro operators to detect and manage disruptions by using large-scale automated data. The crucial precondition of any disruption analytics is to have accurate information about the location, occurrence time, duration and propagation of disruptions. In pursuit of this goal, the thesis develops statistical models to detect disruptions via deviations in trains’ headways relative to their regular services. Our method is a unique contribution in the sense that it is based on automated vehicle location data (data-driven) and the probabilistic framework is effective to detect any type of service interruptions, including minor delays that last just a few minutes. As an important research outcome, the thesis delivers novel analyses of the propagation progress of disruptions along metro lines, thus enabling us to distinguish primary and secondary disruptions as well as recovery interventions performed by operators. The other part of the thesis provides new insights for quantifying disruption impacts and measuring metro vulnerability. One of our key messages is that in metro systems there are factors influencing both the occurrence of disruptions and their outcomes. With such confounding factors, we show that causal inference is a powerful tool to estimate unbiased impacts on passenger demand and journey time, which is also capable of quantifying the spatial-temporal propagation of disruption impacts within metro networks. The causal inference approaches are applied to empirical studies based on the Hong Kong Mass Transit Railway (MTR). Our conclusions can assist researchers and practitioners in two applications: (i) the evaluation of metro performance such as service reliability, system vulnerability and resilience, and (ii) the management of future disruptions.Open Acces

    This open access book is the result of the 1st International Conference on Evaluating Challenges in the Implementation of EU Cohesion Policy (EvEUCoP 2022). It presents the recent findings, sparks discussion, and reveals new research paths addressing the use of novel methodologies and approaches to tackle the challenges and opportunities that are unveiled with the implementation of the EU cohesion policy. The authors cover a wide range of topics including the monitoring of data; the clearness of indicators in measuring the impact of interventions; novel evaluation methods, addressing the mid-term and terminal assessment; as well as case studies and applications on evaluations of the thematic objectives under the scrutiny of the cohesion policy, namely: • Research, technological development, and innovation; • Information and communication technologies; • Shift toward a low-carbon economy. During the 2014-2020 programmatic period, member states were required to undertake assessments to evaluate the efficacy, efficiency, and impact of each operational program. Such evaluations are generally concerned with the compliance of projects and activities with programmatic priorities, as well as with funds' absorption capacity and refer to ex-ante and ex-post assessments.
