    Linguistically motivated parameter estimation methods for a superpositional intonation model

    This paper proposes two novel approaches for parameter estimation of a superpositional intonation model. These approaches present linguistic and paralinguistic assumptions for initializing a pre-existing standard method. In addition, all restrictions on the configuration of commands were eliminated. The proposed linguistic hypotheses can be based on either pitch accents or lexical stress, which give rise to two different estimation methods. These two hypotheses were validated by comparison of the estimation performance relative to two standard methods, one manual and one automatic. The results of the experiments for German, English and Spanish corpora show that the proposed methods outperform the standard ones.Fil: Torres, Humberto Maximiliano.     Toward invariant functional representations of variable surface fundamental frequency contours: Synthesizing speech melody via model-based stochastic learning

    Variability has been one of the major challenges for both theoretical understanding and computer synthesis of speech prosody. In this paper we show that economical representation of variability is the key to effective modeling of prosody. Specifically, we report the development of PENTAtrainer—A trainable yet deterministic prosody synthesizer based on an articulatory–functional view of speech. We show with testing results on Thai, Mandarin and English that it is possible to achieve high-accuracy predictive synthesis of fundamental frequency contours with very small sets of parameters obtained through stochastic learning from real speech data. The first key component of this system is syllable-synchronized sequential target approximation—implemented as the qTA model, which is designed to simulate, for each tonal unit, a wide range of contextual variability with a single invariant target. The second key component is the automatic learning of function-specific targets through stochastic global optimization, guided by a layered pseudo-hierarchical functional annotation scheme, which requires the manual labeling of only the temporal domains of the functional units. The results in terms of synthesis accuracy demonstrate that effective modeling of the contextual variability is the key also to effective modeling of function-related variability. Additionally, we show that, being both theory-based and trainable (hence data-driven), computational systems like PENTAtrainer can serve as an effective modeling tool in basic research, with which the level of falsifiability in theory testing can be raised, and also a closer link between basic and applied research in speech science can be developed

    Fundamental frequency modelling: an articulatory perspective with target approximation and deep learning

    Current statistical parametric speech synthesis (SPSS) approaches typically aim at state/frame-level acoustic modelling, which leads to a problem of frame-by-frame independence. Besides that, whichever learning technique is used, hidden Markov model (HMM), deep neural network (DNN) or recurrent neural network (RNN), the fundamental idea is to set up a direct mapping from linguistic to acoustic features. Although progress is frequently reported, this idea is questionable in terms of biological plausibility. This thesis aims at addressing the above issues by integrating dynamic mechanisms of human speech production as a core component of F0 generation and thus developing a more human-like F0 modelling paradigm. By introducing an articulatory F0 generation model – target approximation (TA) – between text and speech that controls syllable-synchronised F0 generation, contextual F0 variations are processed in two separate yet integrated stages: linguistic to motor, and motor to acoustic. With the goal of demonstrating that human speech movement can be considered as a dynamic process of target approximation and that the TA model is a valid F0 generation model to be used at the motor-to-acoustic stage, a TA-based pitch control experiment is conducted first to simulate the subtle human behaviour of online compensation for pitch-shifted auditory feedback. Then, the TA parameters are collectively controlled by linguistic features via a deep or recurrent neural network (DNN/RNN) at the linguistic-to-motor stage. We trained the systems on a Mandarin Chinese dataset consisting of both statements and questions. The TA-based systems generally outperformed the baseline systems in both objective and subjective evaluations. Furthermore, the amount of required linguistic features were reduced first to syllable level only (with DNN) and then with all positional information removed (with RNN). Fewer linguistic features as input with limited number of TA parameters as output led to less training data and lower model complexity, which in turn led to more efficient training and faster synthesis

    Tone Sandhi Phenomena In Taiwan Southern Min

    This dissertation investigates various aspects of the tone sandhi phenomena in Taiwan Southern Min (TSM). Previous studies have reported complete tonal neutralization between the two sandhi 33 variants derived respectively from citation 55 and 24 variants, leading to the claim that tone sandhi in this language is categorical. The fact that tone sandhi in TSM is assumed to possess a mixture of properties of lexical and postlexical rules gives rise to the debate over the status of this phonological rule. The findings of the dissertation shows incomplete neutralization between the two sandhi 33 variants with an indication of an ongoing sound change towards a near- or complete tonal merger, possibly led by female speakers. In addition, citation form is proposed to be more underlyingly represented on account of the fact that subjects, especially old speakers, have stronger association with citation variants than with sandhi variants in the priming experiment. The spontaneous corpus study suggests that the Tone Circle is merely a phonological idealization in light of the systematic subphonemic difference in f0 between citation X and sandhi X that are supposed to correspond even with some control of conceivable confounding factors. By comparing direct- and indirect-reference models, I argue that tone sandhi in TSM should be analyzed as a head-left Concatenation rule within a DM-based theoretical framework

    Intonation Modelling for Speech Synthesis and Emphasis Preservation

    Speech-to-speech translation is a framework which recognises speech in an input language, translates it to a target language and synthesises speech in this target language. In such a system, variations in the speech signal which are inherent to natural human speech are lost, as the information goes through the different building blocks of the translation process. The work presented in this thesis addresses aspects of speech synthesis which are lost in traditional speech-to-speech translation approaches. The main research axis of this thesis is the study of prosody for speech synthesis and emphasis preservation. A first investigation of regional accents of spoken French is carried out to understand the sensitivity of native listeners with respect to accented speech synthesis. Listening tests show that standard adaptation methods for speech synthesis are not sufficient for listeners to perceive accentedness. On the other hand, combining adaptation with original prosody allows perception of accents. Addressing the need of a more suitable prosody model, a physiologically plausible intonation model is proposed. Inspired by the command-response model, it has basic components, which can be related to muscle responses to nerve impulses. These components are assumed to be a representation of muscle control of the vocal folds. A motivation for such a model is its theoretical language independence, based on the fact that humans share the same vocal apparatus. An automatic parameter extraction method which integrates a perceptually relevant measure is proposed with the model. This approach is evaluated and compared with the standard command-response model. Two corpora including sentences with emphasised words are presented, in the context of the SIWIS project. The first is a multilingual corpus with speech from multiple speaker; the second is a high quality speech synthesis oriented corpus from a professional speaker. Two broad uses of the model are evaluated. The first shows that it is difficult to predict model parameters; however the second shows that parameters can be transferred in the context of emphasis synthesis. A relation between model parameters and linguistic features such as stress and accent is demonstrated. Similar observations are made between the parameters and emphasis. Following, we investigate the extraction of atoms in emphasised speech and their transfer in neutral speech, which turns out to elicit emphasis perception. Using clustering methods, this is extended to the emphasis of other words, using linguistic context. This approach is validated by listening tests, in the case of English

    The aim of this study is to establish whether stylisation of F0 contours based on d'Alessandro and Mertens's model of tonal perception can be successfully applied to lexical tones of Central Thai.     A Likelihood-Ratio Based Forensic Voice Comparison in Standard Thai

    This research uses a likelihood ratio (LR) framework to assess the discriminatory power of a range of acoustic parameters extracted from speech samples produced by male speakers of Standard Thai. The thesis aims to answer two main questions: 1) to what extent the tested linguistic-phonetic segments of Standard Thai perform in forensic voice comparison (FVC); and 2) how such linguistic-phonetic segments are profitably combined through logistic regression using the FoCal Toolkit (Brümmer, 2007). The segments focused on in this study are the four consonants /s, ʨh, n, m/ and the two diphthongs [ɔi, ai]. First of all, using the alveolar fricative /s/, two different sets of features were compared in terms of their performance in FVC. The first comprised the spectrum-based distributional features of four spectral moments, namely mean, variance, skew and kurtosis; the second consisted of the coefficients of the Discrete Cosine Transform (DCTs) applied to a spectrum. As DCTs were found to perform better, they were subsequently used to model the consonant spectrum of the remaining consonants. The consonant spectrum was extracted at the center point of the /s, ʨh, n, m/ consonants with a Hamming window of 31.25 msec. For the diphthongs [ɔi] - [nɔi L] and [ai] - [mai HL], the cubic polynomials fitted to the F2 and F1-F3 formants were tested separately. The quadratic polynomials fitted to the tonal F0 contours of [ɔi] - [nɔi L] and [ai] - [mai HL] were tested as well. Long-term F0 distribution (LTF0) was also trialed. The results show the promising discriminatory power of the Standard Thai acoustic features and segments tested in this thesis. The main findings are as follows. 1. The fricative /s/ performed better with the DCTs (Cllr = 0.70) than with the spectral moments (Cllr = 0.92). 2. The nasals /n, m/ (Cllr = 0.47) performed better than the affricate /tɕh/ (Cllr = 0.54) and the fricative /s/ (Cllr = 0.70) when their DCT coefficients were parameterized. 3. F1-F3 trajectories (Cllr = 0.42 and Cllr = 0.49) outperformed F2 trajectory (Cllr = 0.69 and Cllr = 0.67) for both diphthongs [ɔi] and [ai]. 4. F1-F3 trajectories of the diphthong [ɔi] (Cllr = 0.42) outperformed those of [ai] (Cllr = 0.49). 5. Tonal F0 (Cllr = 0.52) outperformed LTF0 (Cllr = 0.74). 6. Overall, better results were obtained when DCTs of /n/ - [na: HL] and /n/ - [nɔi L] were fused. (Cllr = 0.40 with the largest consistent-with-fact SSLog10LR = 2.53). In light of the findings, we can conclude that Standard Thai is generally amenable to FVC, especially when linguistic-phonetic segments are being combined; it is recommended that the latter procedure be followed when dealing with forensically realistic casework
