    Development of Multiobjective Optimization Techniques for Sonic Boom Minimization

    A discrete, semi-analytical sensitivity analysis procedure has been developed for calculating aerodynamic design sensitivities. The sensitivities of the flow variables and the grid coordinates are numerically calculated using direct differentiation of the respective discretized governing equations. The sensitivity analysis techniques are adapted within a parabolized Navier Stokes equations solver. Aerodynamic design sensitivities for high speed wing-body configurations are calculated using the semi-analytical sensitivity analysis procedures. Representative results obtained compare well with those obtained using the finite difference approach and establish the computational efficiency and accuracy of the semi-analytical procedures. Multidisciplinary design optimization procedures have been developed for aerospace applications namely, gas turbine blades and high speed wing-body configurations. In complex applications, the coupled optimization problems are decomposed into sublevels using multilevel decomposition techniques. In cases with multiple objective functions, formal multiobjective formulation such as the Kreisselmeier-Steinhauser function approach and the modified global criteria approach have been used. Nonlinear programming techniques for continuous design variables and a hybrid optimization technique, based on a simulated annealing algorithm, for discrete design variables have been used for solving the optimization problems. The optimization procedure for gas turbine blades improves the aerodynamic and heat transfer characteristics of the blades. The two-dimensional, blade-to-blade aerodynamic analysis is performed using a panel code. The blade heat transfer analysis is performed using an in-house developed finite element procedure. The optimization procedure yields blade shapes with significantly improved velocity and temperature distributions. The multidisciplinary design optimization procedures for high speed wing-body configurations simultaneously improve the aerodynamic, the sonic boom and the structural characteristics of the aircraft. The flow solution is obtained using a comprehensive parabolized Navier Stokes solver. Sonic boom analysis is performed using an extrapolation procedure. The aircraft wing load carrying member is modeled as either an isotropic or a composite box beam. The isotropic box beam is analyzed using thin wall theory. The composite box beam is analyzed using a finite element procedure. The developed optimization procedures yield significant improvements in all the performance criteria and provide interesting design trade-offs. The semi-analytical sensitivity analysis techniques offer significant computational savings and allow the use of comprehensive analysis procedures within design optimization studies

The high computational costs associated with the optimization have been avoided by using an indirect optimization approach, which was used to dcouple the effect of the flow field variables on the gradients involved. The main challenge while performing the optimization was to maintain low sensitivity to the number of input design variables. This necessitated the use of Reverse Automatic differentiation tools to generate the gradient. All efforts have been made to keep computational costs to a minimum, thereby enabling hi-fidelity optimization to be used even in the initial design stages.     International audienceIn the area of pure numerical simulation of multidisciplinary coupled systems, the computational cost to evaluate a configuration may be very high. A fortiori, in multi- disciplinary optimization, one is led to evaluate a number of different configurations to iterate on the design parameters. This observation motivates the search for the most in- novative and computationally efficient approaches in all the sectors of the computational chain : at the level of the solvers (using a hierarchy of physical models), the meshes and geometrical parameterizations for shape, or shape deformation, the implementation (on a sequential or parallel architecture; grid computing), and the optimizers (deterministic or semi-stochastic, or hybrid; synchronous, or asynchronous). In the present approach, we concentrate on situations typically involving a small number of disciplines assumed to be strongly antagonistic, and a relatively moderate number of related objective functions. However, our objective functions are functionals, that is, PDE-constrained, and thus costly to evaluate. The aerodynamic and structural optimization of an aircraft configuration is a prototype of such a context, when these disciplines have been reduced to a few major objectives. This is the case when, implicitly, many subsystems are taken into account by local optimizations. Our developments are focused on the question of approximating the Pareto set in cases of strongly-conflicting disciplines. For this purpose, a general computational technique is proposed, guided by a form of sensitivity analysis, with the additional objective to be more economical than standard evolutionary approaches

    High speed research system study. Advanced flight deck configuration effects

    In mid-1991 NASA contracted with industry to study the high-speed civil transport (HSCT) flight deck challenges and assess the benefits, prior to initiating their High Speed Research Program (HSRP) Phase 2 efforts, then scheduled for FY-93. The results of this nine-month effort are presented, and a number of the most significant findings for the specified advanced concepts are highlighted: (1) a no nose-droop configuration; (2) a far forward cockpit location; and (3) advanced crew monitoring and control of complex systems. The results indicate that the no nose-droop configuration is critically dependent upon the design and development of a safe, reliable, and certifiable Synthetic Vision System (SVS). The droop-nose configuration would cause significant weight, performance, and cost penalties. The far forward cockpit location, with the conventional side-by-side seating provides little economic advantage; however, a configuration with a tandem seating arrangement provides a substantial increase in either additional payload (i.e., passengers) or potential downsizing of the vehicle with resulting increases in performance efficiencies and associated reductions in emissions. Without a droop nose, forward external visibility is negated and takeoff/landing guidance and control must rely on the use of the SVS. The technologies enabling such capabilities, which de facto provides for Category 3 all-weather operations on every flight independent of weather, represent a dramatic benefits multiplier in a 2005 global ATM network: both in terms of enhanced economic viability and environmental acceptability

    A High-Speed Sonic Boom Workshop was held at NASA Langley Research Center on February 25-27, 1992. The purpose of the workshop was to make presentations on current research activities and accomplishments and to assess progress in the area of sonic boom since the program was initiated in FY-90. Twenty-nine papers were presented during the 2-1/2 day workshop. Attendees included representatives from academia, industry, and government who are actively involved in sonic-boom research.
