Subspace-Based Holistic Registration for Low-Resolution Facial Images
Subspace-based holistic registration is introduced as an alternative to landmark-based face registration, which has a poor performance on low-resolution images, as obtained in camera surveillance applications. The proposed registration method finds the alignment by maximizing the similarity score between a probe and a gallery image. We use a novel probabilistic framework for both user-independent as well as user-specific face registration. The similarity is calculated using the probability that the face image is correctly aligned in a face subspace, but additionally we take the probability into account that the face is misaligned based on the residual error in the dimensions perpendicular to the face subspace. We perform extensive experiments on the FRGCv2 database to evaluate the impact that the face registration methods have on face recognition. Subspace-based holistic registration on low-resolution images can improve face recognition in comparison with landmark-based registration on high-resolution images. The performance of the tested face recognition methods after subspace-based holistic registration on a low-resolution version of the FRGC database is similar to that after manual registration
Coronary Artery Centerline Extraction in Cardiac CT Angiography Using a CNN-Based Orientation Classifier
Coronary artery centerline extraction in cardiac CT angiography (CCTA) images
is a prerequisite for evaluation of stenoses and atherosclerotic plaque. We
propose an algorithm that extracts coronary artery centerlines in CCTA using a
convolutional neural network (CNN).
A 3D dilated CNN is trained to predict the most likely direction and radius
of an artery at any given point in a CCTA image based on a local image patch.
Starting from a single seed point placed manually or automatically anywhere in
a coronary artery, a tracker follows the vessel centerline in two directions
using the predictions of the CNN. Tracking is terminated when no direction can
be identified with high certainty.
The CNN was trained using 32 manually annotated centerlines in a training set
consisting of 8 CCTA images provided in the MICCAI 2008 Coronary Artery
Tracking Challenge (CAT08). Evaluation using 24 test images of the CAT08
challenge showed that extracted centerlines had an average overlap of 93.7%
with 96 manually annotated reference centerlines. Extracted centerline points
were highly accurate, with an average distance of 0.21 mm to reference
centerline points. In a second test set consisting of 50 CCTA scans, 5,448
markers in the coronary arteries were used as seed points to extract single
centerlines. This showed strong correspondence between extracted centerlines
and manually placed markers. In a third test set containing 36 CCTA scans,
fully automatic seeding and centerline extraction led to extraction of on
average 92% of clinically relevant coronary artery segments.
The proposed method is able to accurately and efficiently determine the
direction and radius of coronary arteries. The method can be trained with
limited training data, and once trained allows fast automatic or interactive
extraction of coronary artery trees from CCTA images.Comment: Accepted in Medical Image Analysi
On using gait to enhance frontal face extraction
Visual surveillance finds increasing deployment formonitoring urban environments. Operators need to be able to determine identity from surveillance images and often use face recognition for this purpose. In surveillance environments, it is necessary to handle pose variation of the human head, low frame rate, and low resolution input images. We describe the first use of gait to enable face acquisition and recognition, by analysis of 3-D head motion and gait trajectory, with super-resolution analysis. We use region- and distance-based refinement of head pose estimation. We develop a direct mapping to relate the 2-D image with a 3-D model. In gait trajectory analysis, we model the looming effect so as to obtain the correct face region. Based on head position and the gait trajectory, we can reconstruct high-quality frontal face images which are demonstrated to be suitable for face recognition. The contributions of this research include the construction of a 3-D model for pose estimation from planar imagery and the first use of gait information to enhance the face extraction process allowing for deployment in surveillance scenario
Reflectance Intensity Assisted Automatic and Accurate Extrinsic Calibration of 3D LiDAR and Panoramic Camera Using a Printed Chessboard
This paper presents a novel method for fully automatic and convenient
extrinsic calibration of a 3D LiDAR and a panoramic camera with a normally
printed chessboard. The proposed method is based on the 3D corner estimation of
the chessboard from the sparse point cloud generated by one frame scan of the
LiDAR. To estimate the corners, we formulate a full-scale model of the
chessboard and fit it to the segmented 3D points of the chessboard. The model
is fitted by optimizing the cost function under constraints of correlation
between the reflectance intensity of laser and the color of the chessboard's
patterns. Powell's method is introduced for resolving the discontinuity problem
in optimization. The corners of the fitted model are considered as the 3D
corners of the chessboard. Once the corners of the chessboard in the 3D point
cloud are estimated, the extrinsic calibration of the two sensors is converted
to a 3D-2D matching problem. The corresponding 3D-2D points are used to
calculate the absolute pose of the two sensors with Unified Perspective-n-Point
(UPnP). Further, the calculated parameters are regarded as initial values and
are refined using the Levenberg-Marquardt method. The performance of the
proposed corner detection method from the 3D point cloud is evaluated using
simulations. The results of experiments, conducted on a Velodyne HDL-32e LiDAR
and a Ladybug3 camera under the proposed re-projection error metric,
qualitatively and quantitatively demonstrate the accuracy and stability of the
