A Powerful Optimization Tool for Analog Integrated Circuits Design
This paper presents a new optimization tool for analog circuit design. Proposed tool is based on the robust version of the differential evolution optimization method. Corners of technology, temperature, voltage and current supplies are taken into account during the optimization. That ensures robust resulting circuits. Those circuits usually do not need any schematic change and are ready for the layout.. The newly developed tool is implemented directly to the Cadence design environment to achieve very short setup time of the optimization task. The design automation procedure was enhanced by optimization watchdog feature. It was created to control optimization progress and moreover to reduce the search space to produce better design in shorter time. The optimization algorithm presented in this paper was successfully tested on several design examples
Unsupervised Heart-rate Estimation in Wearables With Liquid States and A Probabilistic Readout
Heart-rate estimation is a fundamental feature of modern wearable devices. In
this paper we propose a machine intelligent approach for heart-rate estimation
from electrocardiogram (ECG) data collected using wearable devices. The novelty
of our approach lies in (1) encoding spatio-temporal properties of ECG signals
directly into spike train and using this to excite recurrently connected
spiking neurons in a Liquid State Machine computation model; (2) a novel
learning algorithm; and (3) an intelligently designed unsupervised readout
based on Fuzzy c-Means clustering of spike responses from a subset of neurons
(Liquid states), selected using particle swarm optimization. Our approach
differs from existing works by learning directly from ECG signals (allowing
personalization), without requiring costly data annotations. Additionally, our
approach can be easily implemented on state-of-the-art spiking-based
neuromorphic systems, offering high accuracy, yet significantly low energy
footprint, leading to an extended battery life of wearable devices. We
validated our approach with CARLsim, a GPU accelerated spiking neural network
simulator modeling Izhikevich spiking neurons with Spike Timing Dependent
Plasticity (STDP) and homeostatic scaling. A range of subjects are considered
from in-house clinical trials and public ECG databases. Results show high
accuracy and low energy footprint in heart-rate estimation across subjects with
and without cardiac irregularities, signifying the strong potential of this
approach to be integrated in future wearable devices.Comment: 51 pages, 12 figures, 6 tables, 95 references. Under submission at

Open-Source TIG-Based Metal 3D-Printing
Metal 3-D printing has been relegated to high-cost proprietary high-resolution systems and low-resolution low-cost metal inert gas (MIG) systems. In order to provide a path to high-resolution, low-cost, metal 3-D printing, this manuscript proposes a new open source metal 3-D printer design based around a low-cost tungsten inert gas (TIG) welder coupled to a commercial open source self replicating rapid prototyper. Optimal printing parameters for the machine are acquired using a novel computational intelligence software. TIG has many advantages over MIG, such as having a low heat input, clean beads, and the potential for both high-resolution prints as well as insitu alloying of complex geometries. The design can be adapted to most RepRap-class systems and has a basic yet powerful free and open source software (FOSS) package for the characterization of the 3-D printer. This system can be used for fabricating custom metal scientific components and tools, near net-shape structural metal component rapid prototyping, adapting and depositing on existing metal structures, and is deployable for in-field prototyping for appropriate technology applications
Particle Swarm Optimization
Particle swarm optimization (PSO) is a population based stochastic optimization technique influenced by the social behavior of bird flocking or fish schooling.PSO shares many similarities with evolutionary computation techniques such as Genetic Algorithms (GA). The system is initialized with a population of random solutions and searches for optima by updating generations. However, unlike GA, PSO has no evolution operators such as crossover and mutation. In PSO, the potential solutions, called particles, fly through the problem space by following the current optimum particles. This book represents the contributions of the top researchers in this field and will serve as a valuable tool for professionals in this interdisciplinary field
A Comprehensive Review of Bio-Inspired Optimization Algorithms Including Applications in Microelectronics and Nanophotonics
The application of artificial intelligence in everyday life is becoming all-pervasive and unavoidable. Within that vast field, a special place belongs to biomimetic/bio-inspired algorithms for multiparameter optimization, which find their use in a large number of areas. Novel methods and advances are being published at an accelerated pace. Because of that, in spite of the fact that there are a lot of surveys and reviews in the field, they quickly become dated. Thus, it is of importance to keep pace with the current developments. In this review, we first consider a possible classification of bio-inspired multiparameter optimization methods because papers dedicated to that area are relatively scarce and often contradictory. We proceed by describing in some detail some more prominent approaches, as well as those most recently published. Finally, we consider the use of biomimetic algorithms in two related wide fields, namely microelectronics (including circuit design optimization) and nanophotonics (including inverse design of structures such as photonic crystals, nanoplasmonic configurations and metamaterials). We attempted to keep this broad survey self-contained so it can be of use not only to scholars in the related fields, but also to all those interested in the latest developments in this attractive area
Genetic Algorithms in Stochastic Optimization and Applications in Power Electronics
Genetic Algorithms (GAs) are widely used in multiple fields, ranging from mathematics, physics, to engineering fields, computational science, bioinformatics, manufacturing, economics, etc. The stochastic optimization problems are important in power electronics and control systems, and most designs require choosing optimum parameters to ensure maximum control effect or minimum noise impact; however, they are difficult to solve using the exhaustive searching method, especially when the search domain conveys a large area or is infinite. Instead, GAs can be applied to solve those problems. And efficient computing budget allocation technique for allocating the samples in GAs is necessary because the real-life problems with noise are often difficult to evaluate and require significant computation effort. A single objective GA is proposed in which computing budget allocation techniques are integrated directly into the selection operator rather than being used during fitness evaluation. This allows fitness evaluations to be allocated towards specific individuals for whom the algorithm requires more information, and this selection-integrated method is shown to be more accurate for the same computing budget than the existing evaluation-integrated methods on several test problems. A combination of studies is performed on a multi-objective GA that compares integration of different computing budget allocation methods into either the evaluation or the environmental selection steps. These comparisons are performed on stochastic problems derived from benchmark multi-objective optimization problems and consider varying levels of noise. The algorithms are compared regarding both proximity to and coverage of the true Pareto-optimal front, and sufficient studies are performed to allow statistically significant conclusions to be drawn. Finally, the multi-objective GA with selection integrated sampling technique is applied to solve a multi-objective stochastic optimization problem in a grid connected photovoltaic inverter system with noise injected from both the solar power input and the utility grid

Fast and Robust Design of CMOS VCO for Optimal Performance
The exponentially growing design complexity with technological advancement calls for a large scope in the analog and mixed signal integrated circuit design automation. In the automation process, performance optimization under different environmental constraints is of prime importance. The analog integrated circuits design strongly requires addressing multiple competing performance objectives for optimization with ability to find global solutions in a constrained environment. The integrated circuit (IC) performances are significantly affected by the device, interconnect and package parasitics. Inclusion of circuit parasitics in the design phase along with performance optimization has become a bare necessity for faster prototyping. Besides this, the fabrication process variations have a predominant effect on the circuit performance, which is directly linked to the acceptability of manufactured integrated circuit chips. This necessitates a manufacturing process tolerant design. The development of analog IC design methods exploiting the computational intelligence of evolutionary techniques for optimization, integrating the circuit parasitic in the design optimization process in a more meaningful way and developing process fluctuation tolerant optimal design is the central theme of this thesis. Evolutionary computing multi-objective optimization techniques such as Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm-II and Infeasibility Driven Evolutionary Algorithm are used in this thesis for the development of parasitic aware design techniques for analog ICs. The realistic physical and process constraints are integrated in the proposed design technique. A fast design methodology based on one of the efficient optimization technique is developed and an extensive worst case process variation analysis is performed. This work also presents a novel process corner variation aware analog IC design methodology, which would effectively increase the yield of chips in the acceptable performance window. The performance of all the presented techniques is demonstrated through the application to CMOS ring oscillators, current starved and xi differential voltage controlled oscillators, designed in Cadence Virtuoso Analog Design Environment
