Context-aware person identification in personal photo collections
Identifying the people in photos is an important need for users of photo management systems. We present MediAssist, one such system which facilitates browsing, searching and semi-automatic annotation of personal photos, using analysis of both image content and the context in which the photo is captured. This semi-automatic annotation includes annotation of the identity of people in photos. In this paper, we focus on such person annotation, and propose person identiďŹcation techniques based on a combination of context and content. We propose language modelling and nearest neighbor approaches to context-based person identiďŹcation, in addition to novel face color and image color content-based features (used alongside face recognition and body patch features). We conduct a comprehensive empirical study of these techniques using the real private photo collections of a number of users, and show that combining context- and content-based analysis improves performance over content or context alone
Context-Aware Embeddings for Automatic Art Analysis
Automatic art analysis aims to classify and retrieve artistic representations
from a collection of images by using computer vision and machine learning
techniques. In this work, we propose to enhance visual representations from
neural networks with contextual artistic information. Whereas visual
representations are able to capture information about the content and the style
of an artwork, our proposed context-aware embeddings additionally encode
relationships between different artistic attributes, such as author, school, or
historical period. We design two different approaches for using context in
automatic art analysis. In the first one, contextual data is obtained through a
multi-task learning model, in which several attributes are trained together to
find visual relationships between elements. In the second approach, context is
obtained through an art-specific knowledge graph, which encodes relationships
between artistic attributes. An exhaustive evaluation of both of our models in
several art analysis problems, such as author identification, type
classification, or cross-modal retrieval, show that performance is improved by
up to 7.3% in art classification and 37.24% in retrieval when context-aware
embeddings are used
K-Space at TRECVid 2007
In this paper we describe K-Space participation in
TRECVid 2007. K-Space participated in two tasks, high-level feature extraction and interactive search. We present our approaches for each of these activities and provide a brief analysis of our results. Our high-level feature submission utilized multi-modal low-level features which included visual, audio and temporal elements. Specific concept detectors (such as Face detectors) developed by K-Space partners were also used. We experimented with different machine learning approaches including logistic regression and support vector machines (SVM). Finally we also experimented with both early and late fusion for feature combination. This year we also participated in interactive search, submitting 6 runs. We developed two interfaces which both utilized the same retrieval functionality. Our objective was to measure the effect of context, which was supported to different degrees in each interface, on user performance.
The first of the two systems was a âshotâ based interface,
where the results from a query were presented as a ranked
list of shots. The second interface was âbroadcastâ based,
where results were presented as a ranked list of broadcasts.
Both systems made use of the outputs of our high-level feature submission as well as low-level visual features
Hybrid image representation methods for automatic image annotation: a survey
In most automatic image annotation systems, images are represented with low level features using either global
methods or local methods. In global methods, the entire image is used as a unit. Local methods divide images into blocks where fixed-size sub-image blocks are adopted as sub-units; or into regions by using segmented regions as sub-units in images. In contrast to typical automatic image annotation methods that use either global or local features exclusively, several recent methods have considered incorporating the two kinds of information, and believe that the combination of the two levels of features is
beneficial in annotating images. In this paper, we provide a
survey on automatic image annotation techniques according to
one aspect: feature extraction, and, in order to complement
existing surveys in literature, we focus on the emerging image annotation methods: hybrid methods that combine both global and local features for image representation
Multimedia information technology and the annotation of video
The state of the art in multimedia information technology has not progressed to the point where a single solution is available to meet all reasonable needs of documentalists and users of video archives. In general, we do not have an optimistic view of the usability of new technology in this domain, but digitization and digital power can be expected to cause a small revolution in the area of video archiving. The volume of data leads to two views of the future: on the pessimistic side, overload of data will cause lack of annotation capacity, and on the optimistic side, there will be enough data from which to learn selected concepts that can be deployed to support automatic annotation. At the threshold of this interesting era, we make an attempt to describe the state of the art in technology. We sample the progress in text, sound, and image processing, as well as in machine learning
CHORUS Deliverable 2.1: State of the Art on Multimedia Search Engines
Based on the information provided by European projects and national initiatives related to multimedia search as well as domains experts that participated in the CHORUS Think-thanks and workshops, this document reports on the state of the art related to multimedia content search from, a technical, and socio-economic perspective.
The technical perspective includes an up to date view on content based indexing and retrieval technologies, multimedia search in the context of mobile devices and peer-to-peer networks, and an overview of current evaluation and benchmark inititiatives to measure the performance of multimedia search engines.
From a socio-economic perspective we inventorize the impact and legal consequences of these technical advances and point out future directions of research
