Clustering extension of MOVICAB-IDS to identify SNMP community searches
There are many security systems to protect information resources, but we are still not free from possible successful attacks. This study aims at being one step towards the proposal of an intrusion detection system (IDS) that faces those attacks not previously seen (zero-day attacks), by studying the combination of clustering and neural visualization techniques. To do that, MObile VIsualization Connectionist Agent-Based IDS (MOVICAB-IDS), previously proposed as a hybrid intelligent IDS based on a visualization approach, is upgraded by adding clustering methods. One of the main drawbacks of MOVICAB-IDS was its dependence on human processing; it could not automatically raise an alarm to warn about attacks. Additionally, human users could fail to detect an intrusion even when visualized as an anomalous one. To overcome this limitation, present work proposes the application of clustering techniques to provide automatic response to MOVICAB-IDS to quickly abort intrusive actions while happening. To check the validity of the proposed clustering extension, it faces now an anomalous situation related to the Simple Network Management Protocol: a community search. This attack to get the community string (password guessing) is analysed by clustering and neural tools, individually and in conjunction. Through the experimental stage, it is shown that the combination of clustering and neural projection improves the detection capability on a continuous network flow
Hierarchical Design Based Intrusion Detection System For Wireless Ad hoc Network
In recent years, wireless ad hoc sensor network becomes popular both in civil
and military jobs. However, security is one of the significant challenges for
sensor network because of their deployment in open and unprotected environment.
As cryptographic mechanism is not enough to protect sensor network from
external attacks, intrusion detection system needs to be introduced. Though
intrusion prevention mechanism is one of the major and efficient methods
against attacks, but there might be some attacks for which prevention method is
not known. Besides preventing the system from some known attacks, intrusion
detection system gather necessary information related to attack technique and
help in the development of intrusion prevention system. In addition to
reviewing the present attacks available in wireless sensor network this paper
examines the current efforts to intrusion detection system against wireless
sensor network. In this paper we propose a hierarchical architectural design
based intrusion detection system that fits the current demands and restrictions
of wireless ad hoc sensor network. In this proposed intrusion detection system
architecture we followed clustering mechanism to build a four level
hierarchical network which enhances network scalability to large geographical
area and use both anomaly and misuse detection techniques for intrusion
detection. We introduce policy based detection mechanism as well as intrusion
response together with GSM cell concept for intrusion detection architecture.Comment: 16 pages, International Journal of Network Security & Its

Support Vector Machine for Network Intrusion and Cyber-Attack Detection
The file attached to this record is the author's final peer reviewed version. The Publisher's final version can be found by following the DOI link.Cyber-security threats are a growing concern in networked environments. The development of Intrusion Detection Systems (IDSs) is fundamental in order to provide extra level of security. We have developed an unsupervised anomaly-based IDS that uses statistical techniques to conduct the detection process. Despite providing many advantages, anomaly-based IDSs tend to generate a high number of false alarms. Machine Learning (ML) techniques have gained wide interest in tasks of intrusion detection. In this work, Support Vector Machine (SVM) is deemed as an ML technique that could complement the performance of our IDS, providing a second line of detection to reduce the number of false alarms, or as an alternative detection technique. We assess the performance of our IDS against one-class and two-class SVMs, using linear and non-linear forms. The results that we present show that linear two-class SVM generates highly accurate results, and the accuracy of the linear one-class SVM is very comparable, and it does not need training datasets associated with malicious data. Similarly, the results evidence that our IDS could benefit from the use of ML techniques to increase its accuracy when analysing datasets comprising of non-homogeneous features
A machine learning approach with verification of predictions and assisted supervision for a rule-based network intrusion detection system
Network security is a branch of network management in which network intrusion detection systems provide attack detection features by monitorization of traffic data. Rule-based misuse detection systems use a set of rules or signatures to detect attacks that exploit a particular vulnerability. These rules have to be handcoded by experts to properly identify vulnerabilities, which results in misuse detection systems having limited extensibility. This paper proposes a machine learning layer on top of a rule-based misuse detection system that provides automatic generation of detection rules, prediction verification and assisted classification of new data. Our system offers an overall good performance, while adding an heuristic and adaptive approach to existing rule-based misuse detection systems
The Challenges in SDN/ML Based Network Security : A Survey
Machine Learning is gaining popularity in the network security domain as many
more network-enabled devices get connected, as malicious activities become
stealthier, and as new technologies like Software Defined Networking (SDN)
emerge. Sitting at the application layer and communicating with the control
layer, machine learning based SDN security models exercise a huge influence on
the routing/switching of the entire SDN. Compromising the models is
consequently a very desirable goal. Previous surveys have been done on either
adversarial machine learning or the general vulnerabilities of SDNs but not
both. Through examination of the latest ML-based SDN security applications and
a good look at ML/SDN specific vulnerabilities accompanied by common attack
methods on ML, this paper serves as a unique survey, making a case for more
secure development processes of ML-based SDN security applications.Comment: 8 pages. arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with
