Keywords given by authors of scientific articles in database descriptors
This paper analyses the keywords given by authors of scientific articles and the descriptors assigned to the articles in order to ascertain the presence of the keywords in the descriptors. 640 INSPEC, CAB abstracts, ISTA and LISA database records were consulted. After detailed comparisons it was found that keywords provided by authors have an important presence in the database descriptors studied, since nearly 25% of all the keywords appeared in exactly the same form as descriptors, with another 21% while normalized, are still detected in the descriptors. This means that almost 46% of keywords appear in the descriptors, either as such or after normalization. Elsewhere, three distinct indexing policies appear, one represented by INSPEC and LISA (indexers seem to have freedom to assign the descriptors they deem necessary); another is represented by CAB (no record has fewer than four descriptors and, in general, a large number of descriptors is employed; in contrast, in ISTA, a certain institutional code towards economy in indexing, since 84% of records contain only four descriptors
On the Feasibility of Social Network-based Pollution Sensing in ITSs
Intense vehicular traffic is recognized as a global societal problem, with a
multifaceted influence on the quality of life of a person. Intelligent
Transportation Systems (ITS) can play an important role in combating such
problem, decreasing pollution levels and, consequently, their negative effects.
One of the goals of ITSs, in fact, is that of controlling traffic flows,
measuring traffic states, providing vehicles with routes that globally pursue
low pollution conditions. How such systems measure and enforce given traffic
states has been at the center of multiple research efforts in the past few
years. Although many different solutions have been proposed, very limited
effort has been devoted to exploring the potential of social network analysis
in such context. Social networks, in general, provide direct feedback from
people and, as such, potentially very valuable information. A post that tells,
for example, how a person feels about pollution at a given time in a given
location, could be put to good use by an environment aware ITS aiming at
minimizing contaminant emissions in residential areas. This work verifies the
feasibility of using pollution related social network feeds into ITS
operations. In particular, it concentrates on understanding how reliable such
information is, producing an analysis that confronts over 1,500,000 posts and

Can Lessons from Public Health Disease Surveillance Be Applied to Environmental Public Health Tracking?
Disease surveillance has a century-long tradition in public health, and environmental data have been collected at a national level by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for several decades. Recently, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced an initiative to develop a national environmental public health tracking (EPHT) network with “linkage” of existing environmental and chronic disease data as a central goal. On the basis of experience with long-established disease surveillance systems, in this article we suggest how a system capable of linking routinely collected disease and exposure data should be developed, but caution that formal linkage of data is not the only approach required for an effective EPHT program. The primary operational goal of EPHT has to be the “treatment” of the environment to prevent and/or reduce exposures and minimize population risk for developing chronic diseases. Chronic, multifactorial diseases do not lend themselves to data-driven evaluations of intervention strategies, time trends, exposure patterns, or identification of at-risk populations based only on routinely collected surveillance data. Thus, EPHT should be synonymous with a dynamic process requiring regular system updates to a) incorporate new technologies to improve population-level exposure and disease assessment, b) allow public dissemination of new data that become available, c) allow the policy community to address new and emerging exposures and disease “threads,” and d) evaluate the effectiveness of EPHT over some appropriate time interval. It will be necessary to weigh the benefits of surveillance against its costs, but the major challenge will be to maintain support for this important new system

Towards improved bioaerosol model validation and verification
Bioaerosols, comprised of bacteria, fungi and viruses are ubiquitous in ambient air. Known to adversely affect human health, the impact of bioaerosols on a population often manifests as outbreaks of illnesses such as Legionnaires Disease and Q fever, although the concentrations and environmental conditions in which these impacts occur are not well understood. Bioaerosol concentrations vary from source to source, but specific industrialised human activities such as water treatment, intensive agriculture and open windrow composting facilitate the generation of bioaerosol concentrations many times higher than natural background levels. Bioaerosol sampling is currently undertaken according to the requirements of the Environment Agency’s regulatory framework, in which the collection of bioaerosols and not its long-term measurement is of most importance. As a consequence, sampling devices are often moved around site according to changing wind direction and sampling intervals are invariably short-term. The dispersion modelling of bioaerosols from composting facilities typically relies on proxy pollutant parameters. In addition, the use of short term emission data gathering strategies in which monitors are moved frequently with wind direction, do not provide a robust reliable and repeatable dataset by which to validate any modelling or to verify its performance. New sampling methods such as the Spectral Intensity Bioaerosol Sensor (SIBS) provide an opportunity to address several gaps in bioaerosol model validation and verification. Project RISE: Recognizing Industrial Smoke Emissions
Industrial smoke emissions pose a significant concern to human health. Prior
works have shown that using Computer Vision (CV) techniques to identify smoke
as visual evidence can influence the attitude of regulators and empower
citizens to pursue environmental justice. However, existing datasets are not of
sufficient quality nor quantity to train the robust CV models needed to support
air quality advocacy. We introduce RISE, the first large-scale video dataset
for Recognizing Industrial Smoke Emissions. We adopted a citizen science
approach to collaborate with local community members to annotate whether a
video clip has smoke emissions. Our dataset contains 12,567 clips from 19
distinct views from cameras that monitored three industrial facilities. These
daytime clips span 30 days over two years, including all four seasons. We ran
experiments using deep neural networks to establish a strong performance
baseline and reveal smoke recognition challenges. Our survey study discussed
community feedback, and our data analysis displayed opportunities for
integrating citizen scientists and crowd workers into the application of
Artificial Intelligence for social good.Comment: Technical repor
Trade in environmental services: opportunities and constraints
The environmental services sector has been growing rapidly during the last two decades. Moreover, privatization and increasing outward-orientation of environmental services during the 1990s has made this sector an important service sector for negotiations under the new round of GATS.This study explores the nature and structure of the environmental services sector, both globally and in India, with particular focus on recent trends such as privatization and foreign investment in this sector. It also discusses issues of classification and definition which have occupied centre stage in the multilateral negotiations in this sector. The study assesses the implications of liberalizing environmental services in India, taking into account the country's strengths, weaknesses, and interests in this sector. Based on this assessment, it suggests a negotiating strategy for India in environmental services in the ongoing GATS 2000 negotiations. Given the special features of this sector, the study also suggests domestic reforms and regulations to ensure equity and sustainability along with economic efficiency in the provision of environmental services in India.
