    Dimensional Modeling of Emotions in Text with Appraisal Theories: Corpus Creation, Annotation Reliability, and Prediction

    The most prominent tasks in emotion analysis are to assign emotions to texts and to understand how emotions manifest in language. An observation for NLP is that emotions can be communicated implicitly by referring to events, appealing to an empathetic, intersubjective understanding of events, even without explicitly mentioning an emotion name. In psychology, the class of emotion theories known as appraisal theories aims at explaining the link between events and emotions. Appraisals can be formalized as variables that measure a cognitive evaluation by people living through an event that they consider relevant. They include the assessment if an event is novel, if the person considers themselves to be responsible, if it is in line with the own goals, and many others. Such appraisals explain which emotions are developed based on an event, e.g., that a novel situation can induce surprise or one with uncertain consequences could evoke fear. We analyze the suitability of appraisal theories for emotion analysis in text with the goal of understanding if appraisal concepts can reliably be reconstructed by annotators, if they can be predicted by text classifiers, and if appraisal concepts help to identify emotion categories. To achieve that, we compile a corpus by asking people to textually describe events that triggered particular emotions and to disclose their appraisals. Then, we ask readers to reconstruct emotions and appraisals from the text. This setup allows us to measure if emotions and appraisals can be recovered purely from text and provides a human baseline. Our comparison of text classification methods to human annotators shows that both can reliably detect emotions and appraisals with similar performance.     EXPLORATORY STUDY OF HUMAN RESOURCE BASED CONTROL MECHANISMS IN FINNISH-CHINESE INTERNATIONAL JOINT VENTURE: A FOREIGN PARENT PERSPECTIVE

    The main objective of this case study is to explore the use of four human resource based control mechanisms: staffing of the key positions , training and development , performance appraisals and compensation and rewards in a Finnish-Chinese international joint venture from the foreign (Finnish) parent perspective . The study suggests that these four human resource strategies which have proven effective in various other organizational environments can be utilized as important control tools within the context of IJVs though their importance have been neglected in the past . The study also comes with three main findings. First the ranking of these control mechanisms based on their importance differed and the staffing of personnel at key positions gave a greater sense of control to the foreign parent over the IJV followed by training and development, compensation and rewards and performance appraisal. Secondly the foreign parent staffed the key positions only with the PCNs (parent company nationals) and no TCNs (third country nationals) or HCNs (host country nationals) were used. Third the exercise of these four human control mechanisms resulted in greater foreign parent satisfaction and IJV performance. The exercise of these control mechanisms by the foreign parent is explained in the light of agency theory. Effective employment of these mechanisms by the foreign parent firm and implications of these concepts for the mangers and others interested in the successful formation and management of IJVs are also presented.     Unsupervised and knowledge-poor approaches to sentiment analysis

    Sentiment analysis focuses upon automatic classiffication of a document's sentiment (and more generally extraction of opinion from text). Ways of expressing sentiment have been shown to be dependent on what a document is about (domain-dependency). This complicates supervised methods for sentiment analysis which rely on extensive use of training data or linguistic resources that are usually either domain-specific or generic. Both kinds of resources prevent classiffiers from performing well across a range of domains, as this requires appropriate in-domain (domain-specific) data. This thesis presents a novel unsupervised, knowledge-poor approach to sentiment analysis aimed at creating a domain-independent and multilingual sentiment analysis system. The approach extracts domain-specific resources from documents that are to be processed, and uses them for sentiment analysis. This approach does not require any training corpora, large sets of rules or generic sentiment lexicons, which makes it domain- and languageindependent but at the same time able to utilise domain- and language-specific information. The thesis describes and tests the approach, which is applied to diffeerent data, including customer reviews of various types of products, reviews of films and books, and news items; and to four languages: Chinese, English, Russian and Japanese. The approach is applied not only to binary sentiment classiffication, but also to three-way sentiment classiffication (positive, negative and neutral), subjectivity classifiation of documents and sentences, and to the extraction of opinion holders and opinion targets. Experimental results suggest that the approach is often a viable alternative to supervised systems, especially when applied to large document collections

    Investigating and extending the methods in automated opinion analysis through improvements in phrase based analysis

    Opinion analysis is an area of research which deals with the computational treatment of opinion statement and subjectivity in textual data. Opinion analysis has emerged over the past couple of decades as an active area of research, as it provides solutions to the issues raised by information overload. The problem of information overload has emerged with the advancements in communication technologies which gave rise to an exponential growth in user generated subjective data available online. Opinion analysis has a rich set of applications which are used to enable opportunities for organisations such as tracking user opinions about products, social issues in communities through to engagement in political participation etc.The opinion analysis area shows hyperactivity in recent years and research at different levels of granularity has, and is being undertaken. However it is observed that there are limitations in the state-of-the-art, especially as dealing with the level of granularities on their own does not solve current research issues. Therefore a novel sentence level opinion analysis approach utilising clause and phrase level analysis is proposed. This approach uses linguistic and syntactic analysis of sentences to understand the interdependence of words within sentences, and further uses rule based analysis for phrase level analysis to calculate the opinion at each hierarchical structure of a sentence. The proposed opinion analysis approach requires lexical and contextual resources for implementation. In the context of this Thesis the approach is further presented as part of an extended unifying framework for opinion analysis resulting in the design and construction of a novel corpus. The above contributions to the field (approach, framework and corpus) are evaluated within the Thesis and are found to make improvements on existing limitations in the field, particularly with regards to opinion analysis automation. Further work is required in integrating a mechanism for greater word sense disambiguation and in lexical resource development

    Adaptability and mindfulness of Chinese knowledge workers in multinational companies

    Important aspects of human activity such as international trade, travel and investment are gaining pace, in what has become known as the “Great Acceleration”. For companies, technology adoption cycles are contracting, disrupting industries and increasing the pressure on workers to adapt. At the same time, mindfulness is attracting attention for its success in improving people’s mental health, including the reduction of stress. This research investigates how a group of 13 Chinese knowledge workers perceive and respond to their rapidly changing environment, and the possible influence of mindfulness on helping them cope with change. Adopting a critical realist approach, in-depth interviews were conducted with individuals at multinational corporations in China and analysed using the Framework process. The research builds on existing theory by developing a process model of adaptability that incorporates the new concept of “adaptability gaps” that need to be addressed in response to change and also highlights the influence of age and experience on successful coping. Evidence supports to some extent the theoretical linkages between mindfulness and adaptability, especially in participants’ attitude and responses to change. Implications for professional practice include the need for organisations to identify and nurture adaptability in their work forces, and for individuals to increase their awareness of change and develop tactics to close the “adaptability gaps” that it creates

    Trialing project-based learning in a new EAP ESP course: A collaborative reflective practice of three college English teachers

    Currently in many Chinese universities, the traditional College English course is facing the risk of being ‘marginalized’, replaced or even removed, and many hours previously allocated to the course are now being taken by EAP or ESP. At X University in northern China, a curriculum reform as such is taking place, as a result of which a new course has been created called ‘xue ke’ English. Despite the fact that ‘xue ke’ means subject literally, the course designer has made it clear that subject content is not the target, nor is the course the same as EAP or ESP. This curriculum initiative, while possibly having been justified with a rationale of some kind (e.g. to meet with changing social and/or academic needs of students and/or institutions), this is posing a great challenge for, as well as considerable pressure on, a number of College English teachers who have taught this single course for almost their entire teaching career. In such a context, three teachers formed a peer support group in Semester One this year, to work collaboratively co-tackling the challenge, and they chose Project-Based Learning (PBL) for the new course. This presentation will report on the implementation of this project, including the overall designing, operational procedure, and the teachers’ reflections. Based on discussion, pre-agreement was reached on the purpose and manner of collaboration as offering peer support for more effective teaching and learning and fulfilling and pleasant professional development. A WeChat group was set up as the chief platform for messaging, idea-sharing, and resource-exchanging. Physical meetings were supplementary, with sound agenda but flexible time, and venues. Mosoteach cloud class (lan mo yun ban ke) was established as a tool for virtual learning, employed both in and after class. Discussions were held at the beginning of the semester which determined only brief outlines for PBL implementation and allowed space for everyone to autonomously explore in their own way. Constant further discussions followed, which generated a great deal of opportunities for peer learning and lesson plan modifications. A reflective journal, in a greater or lesser detailed manner, was also kept by each teacher to record the journey of the collaboration. At the end of the semester, it was commonly recognized that, although challenges existed, the collaboration was overall a success and they were all willing to continue with it and endeavor to refine it to be a more professional and productive approach
