This dissertation provides an empirical investigation of German verbs conducted on the basis of statistical descriptions acquired from a large corpus of German text. In a brief overview of the linguistic theory pertaining to the lexical semantics of verbs, I outline the idea that verb meaning is composed of argument structure (the number and types of arguments that co-occur with a verb) and aspectual structure (properties describing the temporal progression of an event referenced by the verb). I then produce statistical descriptions of verbs according to these two distinct facets of meaning: In particular, I examine verbal subcategorisation, selectional preferences, and aspectual type. All three of these modelling strategies are evaluated on a common task, automatic verb classification. I demonstrate that automatically acquired features capturing verbal lexical aspect are beneficial for an application that concerns argument structure, namely semantic role labelling. Furthermore, I demonstrate that features capturing verbal argument structure perform well on the task of classifying a verb for its aspectual type. These findings suggest that these two facets of verb meaning are related in an underlying way

Eesti keele ühendverbide automaattuvastus lingvistiliste ja statistiliste meetoditega

Tänapäeval on inimkeeli (kaasa arvatud eesti keelt) töötlevad tehnoloogiaseadmed igapäevaelu osa, kuid arvutite „keeleoskus“ pole kaugeltki täiuslik. Keele automaattöötluse kõige rohkem kasutust leidev rakendus on ilmselt masintõlge. Seega on eriti inglise keele põhjal välja pakutud terve hulk meetodeid, mida pole siiamaani eesti keele püsiühendite tuvastamiseks rakendatud. Doktoritöös kasutataksegi masinõppe meetodeid, mis on teiste keelte püsiühendite tuvastamisel edukad olnud, üht liiki eesti keele püsiühendi – ühendverbi – automaatseks tuvastamiseks. Töös demonstreeritakse suurte tekstiandmete põhjal, et seni eesti keele traditsioonilises käsitluses esitatud eesti keele ühendverbide jaotus ainukordseteks (ühendi komponentide koosesinemisel tekib uus tähendus) ja korrapärasteks (ühendi tähendus on tema komponentide summa) ei ole piisavalt põhjalik. Nimelt kinnitab töö arvutilingvistilistes uurimustes laialt levinud arusaama, et püsiühendid (k.a ühendverbid) jaotuvad skaalale, mille ühes otsas on ühendid, mille tähendus on selgelt komponentide tähenduste summa. ja teises need ühendid, mis saavad uue tähenduse. Uurimus näitab, et lisaks kontekstile aitavad arvutil tuvastada ühendverbi õiget tähendust mitmed teised tunnuseid, näiteks subjekti ja objekti elusus ja käänded. Doktoritöö raames valminud andmestikud ja vektoresitused on vajalikud uued ressursid, mis on avalikud edaspidisteks uurimusteks.Nowadays, applications that process human languages (including Estonian) are part of everyday life. However, computers are not yet able to understand every nuance of language. Machine translation is probably the most well-known application of natural language processing. Occasionally, the worst failures of machine translation systems (e.g. Google Translate) are shared on social media. Most of such cases happen when sequences longer than words are translated. For example, translation systems are not able to catch the correct meaning of the particle verb alt (‘from under’) minema (‘to go’) (‘to get deceived’) in the sentence Ta läks lepinguga alt because the literal translation of the components of the expression is not correct. In order to improve the quality of machine translation systems and other useful applications, e.g. spam detection or question answering systems, such (idiomatic) multi-word expressions and their meanings must be well detected. The detection of multi-word expressions and their meaning is important in all languages and therefore much research has been done in the field, especially in English. However, the suggested methods have not been applied to the detection of Estonian multi-word expressions before. The dissertation fills that gap and applies well-known machine learning methods to detect one type of Estonian multi-word expressions – the particle verbs. Based on large textual data, the thesis demonstrates that the traditional binary division of Estonian particle verbs to non-compositional (ainukordne, meaning is not predictable from the meaning of its components) and compositional (korrapärane, meaning is predictable from the meaning of its components) is not comprehensive enough. The research confirms the widely adopted view in computational linguistics that the multi-word expressions form a continuum between the compositional and non-compositional units. Moreover, it is shown that in addition to context, there are some linguistic features, e.g. the animacy and cases of subject and object that help computers to predict whether the meaning of a particle verb in a sentence is compositional or non-compositional. In addition, the research introduces novel resources for Estonian language – trained embeddings and created compositionality datasets are available for the future research.https://www.ester.ee/record=b5252157~S

Exploiting Cross-Lingual Representations For Natural Language Processing

Traditional approaches to supervised learning require a generous amount of labeled data for good generalization. While such annotation-heavy approaches have proven useful for some Natural Language Processing (NLP) tasks in high-resource languages (like English), they are unlikely to scale to languages where collecting labeled data is di cult and time-consuming. Translating supervision available in English is also not a viable solution, because developing a good machine translation system requires expensive to annotate resources which are not available for most languages. In this thesis, I argue that cross-lingual representations are an effective means of extending NLP tools to languages beyond English without resorting to generous amounts of annotated data or expensive machine translation. These representations can be learned in an inexpensive manner, often from signals completely unrelated to the task of interest. I begin with a review of different ways of inducing such representations using a variety of cross-lingual signals and study algorithmic approaches of using them in a diverse set of downstream tasks. Examples of such tasks covered in this thesis include learning representations to transfer a trained model across languages for document classification, assist in monolingual lexical semantics like word sense induction, identify asymmetric lexical relationships like hypernymy between words in different languages, or combining supervision across languages through a shared feature space for cross-lingual entity linking. In all these applications, the representations make information expressed in other languages available in English, while requiring minimal additional supervision in the language of interest

[eng] Because parsers are still limited in analysing specific ambiguous constructions, the research presented in this thesis mainly aims to contribute to the improvement of parsing performance when it has knowledge integrated in order to deal with ambiguous linguistic phenomena. More precisely, this thesis intends to provide empirical solutions to the disambiguation of prepositional phrase attachment and argument recognition in order to assist parsers in generating a more accurate syntactic analysis. The disambiguation of these two highly ambiguous linguistic phenomena by the integration of knowledge about the language necessarily relies on linguistic and statistical strategies for knowledge acquisition. The starting point of this research proposal is the development of a rule-based grammar for Spanish and for Catalan following the theoretical basis of Dependency Grammar (Tesnière, 1959; Mel’čuk, 1988) in order to carry out two experiments about the integration of automatically- acquired knowledge. In order to build two robust grammars that understand a sentence, the FreeLing pipeline (Padró et al., 2010) has been used as a framework. On the other hand, an eclectic repertoire of criteria about the nature of syntactic heads is proposed by reviewing the postulates of Generative Grammar (Chomsky, 1981; Bonet and Solà, 1986; Haegeman, 1991) and Dependency Grammar (Tesnière, 1959; Mel’čuk, 1988). Furthermore, a set of dependency relations is provided and mapped to Universal Dependencies (Mcdonald et al., 2013). Furthermore, an empirical evaluation method has been designed in order to carry out both a quantitative and a qualitative analysis. In particular, the dependency parsed trees generated by the grammars are compared to real linguistic data. The quantitative evaluation is based on the Spanish Tibidabo Treebank (Marimon et al., 2014), which is large enough to carry out a real analysis of the grammars performance and which has been annotated with the same formalism as the grammars, syntactic dependencies. Since the criteria between both resources are differ- ent, a process of harmonization has been applied developing a set of rules that automatically adapt the criteria of the corpus to the grammar criteria. With regard to qualitative evaluation, there are no available resources to evaluate Spanish and Catalan dependency grammars quali- tatively. For this reason, a test suite of syntactic phenomena about structure and word order has been built. In order to create a representative repertoire of the languages observed, descriptive grammars (Bosque and Demonte, 1999; Solà et al., 2002) and the SenSem Corpus (Vázquez and Fernández-Montraveta, 2015) have been used for capturing relevant structures and word order patterns, respectively. Thanks to these two tools, two experiments have been carried out in order to prove that knowl- edge integration improves the parsing accuracy. On the one hand, the automatic learning of lan- guage models has been explored by means of statistical methods in order to disambiguate PP- attachment. More precisely, a model has been learned with a supervised classifier using Weka (Witten and Frank, 2005). Furthermore, an unsupervised model based on word embeddings has been applied (Mikolov et al., 2013a,b). The results of the experiment show that the supervised method is limited in predicting solutions for unseen data, which is resolved by the unsupervised method since provides a solution for any case. However, the unsupervised method is limited if it Parsing and Evaluation Improving Dependency Grammars Accuracy only learns from lexical data. For this reason, training data needs to be enriched with the lexical value of the preposition, as well as semantic and syntactic features. In addition, the number of patterns used to learn language models has to be extended in order to have an impact on the grammars. On the other hand, another experiment is carried out in order to improve the argument recog- nition in the grammars by the acquisition of linguistic knowledge. In this experiment, knowledge is acquired automatically from the extraction of verb subcategorization frames from the SenSem Corpus (Vázquez and Fernández-Montraveta, 2015) which contains the verb predicate and its arguments annotated syntactically. As a result of the information extracted, subcategorization frames have been classified into subcategorization classes regarding the patterns observed in the corpus. The results of the subcategorization classes integration in the grammars prove that this information increases the accuracy of the argument recognition in the grammars. The results of the research of this thesis show that grammars’ rules on their own are not ex- pressive enough to resolve complex ambiguities. However, the integration of knowledge about these ambiguities in the grammars may be decisive in the disambiguation. On the one hand, sta- tistical knowledge about PP-attachment can improve the grammars accuracy, but syntactic and semantic information, and new patterns of PP-attachment need to be included in the language models in order to contribute to disambiguate this phenomenon. On the other hand, linguistic knowledge about verb subcategorization acquired from annotated linguistic resources show a positive influence positively on grammars’ accuracy.[cat] Aquesta tesi vol tractar les limitacions amb què es troben els analitzadors sintàctics automàtics actualment.

Detecting subjectivity through lexicon-grammar. strategies databases, rules and apps for the italian language

2014 - 2015The present research handles the detection of linguistic phenomena connected to subjectivity, emotions and opinions from a computational point of view. The necessity to quickly monitor huge quantity of semi-structured and unstructured data from the web, poses several challenges to Natural Language Processing, that must provide strategies and tools to analyze their structures from a lexical, syntactical and semantic point of views. The general aim of the Sentiment Analysis, shared with the broader fields of NLP, Data Mining, Information Extraction, etc., is the automatic extraction of value from chaos; its specific focus instead is on opinions rather than on factual information. This is the aspect that differentiates it from other computational linguistics subfields. The majority of the sentiment lexicons has been manually or automatically created for the English language; therefore, existent Italian lexicons are mostly built through the translation and adaptation of the English lexical databases, e.g. SentiWordNet and WordNet-Affect. Unlike many other Italian and English sentiment lexicons, our database SentIta, made up on the interaction of electronic dictionaries and lexicon dependent local grammars, is able to manage simple and multiword structures, that can take the shape of distributionally free structures, distributionally restricted structures and frozen structures. Moreover, differently from other lexicon-based Sentiment Analysis methods, our approach has been grounded on the solidity of the Lexicon-Grammar resources and classifications, that provides fine-grained semantic but also syntactic descriptions of the lexical entries. According with the major contribution in the Sentiment Analysis literature, we did not consider polar words in isolation. We computed they elementary sentence contexts, with the allowed transformations and, then, their interaction with contextual valence shifters, the linguistic devices that are able to modify the prior polarity of the words from SentIta, when occurring with them in the same sentences. In order to do so, we took advantage of the computational power of the finite-state technology. We formalized a set of rules that work for the intensification, downtoning and negation modeling, the modality detection and the analysis of comparative forms. With regard to the applicative part of the research, we conducted, with satisfactory results, three experiments on the same number of Sentiment Analysis subtasks: the sentiment classification of documents and sentences, the feature-based Sentiment Analysis and the Semantic Role Labeling based on sentiments.

Induction, Semantic Validation and Evaluation of a Derivational Morphology Lexicon for German

This thesis is about computational morphology for German derivation. Derivation is a word formation process that creates new words from existing ones, where the base and the derived word share the same stem. Mostly, derivation is conducted by means of relatively regular affixation rules, as in to bake - bakery. In German, derivation is highly productive, thus leading to a high language variability which can be employed to express similar facts in different ways, as derivationally related words are often also semantically related (or transparent). However, linguistic variance is a challenge for computational applications, particularly in semantic processing: It makes it more difficult to automatically grasp the meaning of texts and to match similar information onto each other. Thus, computational systems require linguistic knowledge. We develop methods to induce and represent derivational knowledge, and to apply it in language processing. The main outcome of our study is DErivBase, a German derivational lexicon. It groups derivationally related words (words that are derived from the same stem) into derivational families. To achieve high quality and high coverage, we induce DErivBase by combining rule-based and data-driven methods: We implement linguistic derivation rules to define derivational processes, and feed lemmas extracted from a German corpus into the rules to derive new lemmas. All words that are connected - directly or indirectly - by such rules are considered a derivational family. As mentioned above, a derivational relationship often implies semantic relationship, but this is not always the case. Semantic drifts can cause semantically unrelated (opaque) derivational relations, such as to depart - department. Capturing the difference between transparent and opaque relations is important from a linguistic as well as a practical point of view. Thus, we conduct a semantic refinement of DErivBase, i.e., we determine which lemma pairs are derivationally and semantically related, and which are not. We establish a second, semantically validated version of our lexicon, where families are sub-clustered according to semantic coherence, using supervised machine learning methods: We learn a binary classifier based on features that arise from structural information about the derivation rules, and from distributional information about the semantic relatedness of lemmas. Accordingly, the derivational families are subdivided into semantically coherent clusters. To demonstrate the utility of the two lexicon versions, we evaluate them on three extrinsic - and in the broadest sense, semantic - tasks. The underlying assumption for applying DErivBase to semantic tasks is that derivational relatedness is a reasonable approximation to semantic relatedness, since derivation is often semantically transparent. Our three experiments are the following: 1., we incorporate DErivBase into distributional semantic models to overcome sparsity problems and to improve the prediction quality of the underlying model. We test this method, which we call derivational smoothing, for semantic similarity prediction, and for synonym choice. 2., we employ DErivBase to model a psycholinguistic experiment that examines priming effects of transparent and opaque derivations to draw conclusions about the mental lexical representation in German. Derivational information is again incorporated into a distributional model, but this time, it introduces a kind of morphological generalisation. 3., in order to solve the task of Recognising Textual Entailment, we integrate DErivBase into a matching-based entailment system by means of a query expansion. Assuming that derivational relationships between two texts suggest them to be entailing rather than non-entailing, this expansion increases the chance of a lexical overlap, which should improve the system's entailment predictions. The incorporation of DErivBase indeed improves the performance of the underlying systems in each task, however, it is differently suitable in different settings. In experiment 1., the semantically validated lexicon yields improvements over the purely morphological lexicon, and the more coarse-grained similarity prediction profits more from DErivBase than the synonym choice. In experiment 2., purely morphological information clearly outperforms the other lexicon version, as the latter cannot model opaque derivations. On the entailment task in experiment 3., DErivBase has only minor impact, because textual entailment is hard to solve by addressing only one linguistic phenomenon. In sum, our findings show that the induction of a high-quality, high-coverage derivational lexicon is beneficial for very different applications in computational linguistics. It might be worthwhile to further investigate the semantic aspects of derivation to better understand its impact on language and thus, on language processing
