    Large Scale Visual Recommendations From Street Fashion Images

    We describe a completely automated large scale visual recommendation system for fashion. Our focus is to efficiently harness the availability of large quantities of online fashion images and their rich meta-data. Specifically, we propose four data driven models in the form of Complementary Nearest Neighbor Consensus, Gaussian Mixture Models, Texture Agnostic Retrieval and Markov Chain LDA for solving this problem. We analyze relative merits and pitfalls of these algorithms through extensive experimentation on a large-scale data set and baseline them against existing ideas from color science. We also illustrate key fashion insights learned through these experiments and show how they can be employed to design better recommendation systems. Finally, we also outline a large-scale annotated data set of fashion images (Fashion-136K) that can be exploited for future vision research

    Hybrid automated reliability predictor integrated work station (HiREL)

    The Hybrid Automated Reliability Predictor (HARP) integrated reliability (HiREL) workstation tool system marks another step toward the goal of producing a totally integrated computer aided design (CAD) workstation design capability. Since a reliability engineer must generally graphically represent a reliability model before he can solve it, the use of a graphical input description language increases productivity and decreases the incidence of error. The captured image displayed on a cathode ray tube (CRT) screen serves as a documented copy of the model and provides the data for automatic input to the HARP reliability model solver. The introduction of dependency gates to a fault tree notation allows the modeling of very large fault tolerant system models using a concise and visually recognizable and familiar graphical language. In addition to aiding in the validation of the reliability model, the concise graphical representation presents company management, regulatory agencies, and company customers a means of expressing a complex model that is readily understandable. The graphical postprocessor computer program HARPO (HARP Output) makes it possible for reliability engineers to quickly analyze huge amounts of reliability/availability data to observe trends due to exploratory design changes

    AmIE: An Ambient Intelligent Environment for Assisted Living

    In the modern world of technology Internet-of-things (IoT) systems strives to provide an extensive interconnected and automated solutions for almost every life aspect. This paper proposes an IoT context-aware system to present an Ambient Intelligence (AmI) environment; such as an apartment, house, or a building; to assist blind, visually-impaired, and elderly people. The proposed system aims at providing an easy-to-utilize voice-controlled system to locate, navigate and assist users indoors. The main purpose of the system is to provide indoor positioning, assisted navigation, outside weather information, room temperature, people availability, phone calls and emergency evacuation when needed. The system enhances the user's awareness of the surrounding environment by feeding them with relevant information through a wearable device to assist them. In addition, the system is voice-controlled in both English and Arabic languages and the information are displayed as audio messages in both languages. The system design, implementation, and evaluation consider the constraints in common types of premises in Kuwait and in challenges, such as the training needed by the users.     Design, implementation, and analysis of the Personnel, Operations, Equipment, and Training (POET) database and application program for the Turkish Navy Frigate

    The Turkish Navy frigates have a challenging mission, which encompasses tactical, operational and administrative tasks. Lacking an automated information infrastructure hinders the ships' ability to efficiently perform the administrative activities, to generate the required reports quickly and to make effective decisions based on this information. The objective of this thesis is to design and implement the Personnel, Operations, Equipment, and Training (POET) Database and Application Program for the Turkish Navy frigates and to analyze the potential benefits that will be obtained by using this system. The POET database system will provide the Turkish Navy frigates with an automated information system that will support the administrative activities, release manpower to perform other duties and reduce the productive power loss by increasing the availability, accuracy, and consistency of the data. The thesis covers the analysis of requirements, conceptual database design using Semantic Data Model, logical database design on Microsoft Access DBMS, and implementation of the application program using Java and JDBC API.     Optimising the maintenance strategy for a multi-AGV system using genetic algorithms

    Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs) are playing increasingly vital roles in a variety of applications in modern society, such as intelligent transportation in warehouses and material distribution in automated production lines. They improve production efficiency, save labour cost, and bring significant economic benefit to end users. However, to utilise these potential benefits is highly dependent on the reliability and availability of the AGVs. In other words, an effective maintenance strategy is critical in the application of AGVs. The research activity reported in this paper is to realise an effective maintenance strategy for a multi-AGV system by the approach of Genetic Algorithms (GA). To facilitate the research, an automated material distribution system consisting of three AGVs is considered in this paper for methodology development. The movement of every AGV in the multi-AGV system, and the corrective and periodic preventive maintenances of failed AGVs are modelled using the approach of Coloured Petri Nets (CPNs). Then, a GA is adopted for optimising the maintenance and associated design and operation of the multi-AGV system. From this research, it is disclosed that both the location selection of the maintenance site and the maintenance strategies that are adopted for AGV maintenance have significant influences on the efficiency, cost, and productivity of a multi-AGV system

    SRAT-Distribution Voltage Sags and Reliability Assessment Tool

    Interruptions to supply and sags of distribution system voltage are the main aspects causing customer complaints. There is a need for analysis of supply reliability and voltage sag to relate system performance with network structure and equipment design parameters. This analysis can also give prediction of voltage dips, as well as relating traditional reliability and momentary outage measures to the properties of protection systems and to network impedances. Existing reliability analysis software often requires substantial training, lacks automated facilities, and suffers from data availability. Thus it requires time-consuming manual intervention for the study of large networks. A user-friendly sag and reliability assessment tool (SRAT) has been developed based on existing impedance data, protection characteristics, and a model of failure probability. The new features included in SRAT are a) efficient reliability and sag assessments for a radial network with limited loops, b) reliability evaluation associated with realistic protection and restoration schemes, c) inclusion of momentary outages in the same model as permanent outage evaluation, d) evaluation of the sag transfer through meshed subtransmission network, and e) simplified probability distribution model determined from available faults records. Examples of the application of the tools to an Australian distribution network are used to illustrate the application of this model
