    Drawing with SAT: four methods and A tool for producing railway infrastructure schematics

    Schematic drawings showing railway tracks and equipment are commonly used to visualize railway operations and to communicate system specifications and construction blueprints. Recent advances in on-line collaboration and modeling tools have raised the expectations for quickly making changes to models, resulting in frequent changes to layouts, text, and/or symbols in schematic drawings. Automating the creation of high-quality schematic views from geographical and topological models can help engineers produce and update drawings efficiently. This paper introduces four methods for automatically producing schematic railway drawings with increasing level of quality and control over the result. The final method, implemented in the open-source tool that we have developed, can use any combination of the following optimization criteria, which can have different priorities in different use cases: width and height of the drawing, the diagonal line lengths, and the number of bends. We show how to encode schematic railway drawings as an optimization problem over Boolean and numerical domains, using combinations of unary number encoding, lazy difference constraints, and numerical optimization into an incremental SAT formulation. We compare drawings resulting from each of the four methods, applied to models of real-world engineering projects and existing railway infrastructure. We also show how to add symbols and labels to the track plan, which is important for the usefulness of the final outputs. Since the proposed tool is customizable and efficiently produces high-quality drawings from railML 2.x models, it can be used (as it is or extended) both as an integrated module in an industrial design tool like RailCOMPLETE, or by researchers for visualization purposes.publishedVersio

    OnTrack: Reflecting on domain specific formal methods for railway designs

    OnTrack is a tool that supports workflows for railway verification that has been implemented using model driven engineering frameworks. Starting with graphical scheme plans and finishing with automatically generated formal models set-up for verification, OnTrack allows railway engineers to interact with verification procedures through encapsulating formal methods. OnTrack is grounded on a domain specification language (DSL) capturing scheme plans and supports generation of various formal models using model transformations. In this paper, we detail the role model driven engineering takes within OnTrack and reflect on the use of model driven engineering concepts for developing domain specific formal methods toolsets

    On the Processing of Highly Nonlinear Solitarywaves and Guided Ultrasonic Waves for Structural Health Monitoring and Nondestructive Evaluation

    The in-situ measurement of thermal stress in civil and mechanical structures may prevent structural anomalies such as unexpected buckling. In the first half of the dissertation, we present a study where highly nonlinear solitary waves (HNSWs) were utilized to measure axial stress in slender beams. HNSWs are compact non-dispersive waves that can form and travel in nonlinear systems such as one-dimensional chains of particles. The effect of the axial stress acting in a beam on the propagation of HNSWs was studied. We found that certain features of the solitary waves enable the measurement of the stress. In general, most guided ultrasonic waves (GUWs)-based health monitoring approaches for structural waveguides are based on the comparison of testing data to baseline data. In the second half of the dissertation, we present a study where some baseline-free signal processing algorithms were presented and applied to numerical and experimental data for the structural health monitoring (SHM) of underwater or dry structures. The algorithms are based on one or more of the following: continuous wavelet transform, empirical mode decomposition, Hilbert transform, competitive optimization algorithm, probabilistic methods. Moreover, experimental data were also processed to extract some features from the time, frequency, and joint timefrequency domains. These features were then fed to a supervised learning algorithm based on artificial neural networks to classify the types of defect. The methods were validated using the numerical model of a plate and a pipe, and the experimental study of a plate in water. In experiment, the propagation of ultrasonic waves was induced by means of laser pulses or transducer and detected with an array of immersion transducers. The results demonstrated that the algorithms are effective, robust against noise, and able to localize and classify the damage

    Time Localization of Abrupt Changes in Cutting Process using Hilbert Huang Transform

    Cutting process is extremely dynamical process influenced by different phenomena such as chip formation, dynamical responses and condition of machining system elements. Different phenomena in cutting zone have signatures in different frequency bands in signal acquired during process monitoring. The time localization of signal’s frequency content is very important. An emerging technique for simultaneous analysis of the signal in time and frequency domain that can be used for time localization of frequency is Hilbert Huang Transform (HHT). It is based on empirical mode decomposition (EMD) of the signal into intrinsic mode functions (IMFs) as simple oscillatory modes. IMFs obtained using EMD can be processed using Hilbert Transform and instantaneous frequency of the signal can be computed. This paper gives a methodology for time localization of cutting process stop during intermittent turning. Cutting process stop leads to abrupt changes in acquired signal correlated to certain frequency band. The frequency band related to abrupt changes is localized in time using HHT. The potentials and limitations of HHT application in machining process monitoring are shown

    Network modeling and optimization for energy and sustainable transit

    Energy and transportation systems are integral to our infrastructure. Along with other types of networks, critical challenges constantly arise, particularly with regard to accessibility, efficiency, optimality, and sustainability. In this dissertation, we use mixed integer programming, data mining and mixed complementarity techniques to address some of these challenges. We have developed an improved schematic mapping algorithm to facilitate the process of network representation for a variety of systems beyond transportation. We also discover fundamental patterns in bicycle ownership on a global scale with implications for sustainable urban planning and public health outcomes. Finally, we model the fast-growing crude oil market in North America, implementing scenarios that point to integrated approaches to exports, pipeline investments and targeted rail restrictions as most viable for addressing medium-term oil transportation concerns. The methods we employ are generalizable to other types of energy and transit systems, and beyond. Finally, we discuss the importance of these methods to newer applications
