Monus Semantics in Vector Addition Systems with States
Vector addition systems with states (VASS) are a popular model for concurrent systems. However, many decision problems have prohibitively high complexity. Therefore, it is sometimes useful to consider overapproximating semantics in which these problems can be decided more efficiently.
We study an overapproximation, called monus semantics, that slightly relaxes the semantics of decrements: A key property of a vector addition systems is that in order to decrement a counter, this counter must have a positive value. In contrast, our semantics allows decrements of zero-valued counters: If such a transition is executed, the counter just remains zero.
It turns out that if only a subset of transitions is used with monus semantics (and the others with classical semantics), then reachability is undecidable. However, we show that if monus semantics is used throughout, reachability remains decidable. In particular, we show that reachability for VASS with monus semantics is as hard as that of classical VASS (i.e. Ackermann-hard), while the zero-reachability and coverability are easier (i.e. EXPSPACE-complete and NP-complete, respectively). We provide a comprehensive account of the complexity of the general reachability problem, reachability of zero configurations, and coverability under monus semantics. We study these problems in general VASS, two-dimensional VASS, and one-dimensional VASS, with unary and binary counter updates
Revisiting Synthesis for One-Counter Automata
We study the (parameter) synthesis problem for one-counter automata with
parameters. One-counter automata are obtained by extending classical
finite-state automata with a counter whose value can range over non-negative
integers and be tested for zero. The updates and tests applicable to the
counter can further be made parametric by introducing a set of integer-valued
variables called parameters. The synthesis problem for such automata asks
whether there exists a valuation of the parameters such that all infinite runs
of the automaton satisfy some omega-regular property. Lechner showed that (the
complement of) the problem can be encoded in a restricted one-alternation
fragment of Presburger arithmetic with divisibility. In this work (i) we argue
that said fragment, called AERPADPLUS, is unfortunately undecidable.
Nevertheless, by a careful re-encoding of the problem into a decidable
restriction of AERPADPLUS, (ii) we prove that the synthesis problem is
decidable in general and in N2EXP for several fixed omega-regular properties.
Finally, (iii) we give a polynomial-space algorithm for the special case of the
problem where parameters can only be used in tests, and not updates, of the
counter

Solutions of twisted word equations, EDT0L languages, and context-free groups

We prove that the full solution set of a twisted word equation with regular constraints is an EDT0L language. It follows that the set of solutions to equations with rational constraints in a contextfree group (= finitely generated virtually free group) in reduced normal forms is EDT0L. We can also decide whether or not the solution set is finite, which was an open problem. Moreover, this can all be done in PSPACE. Our results generalize the work by Lohrey and Sénizergues (ICALP 2006) and Dahmani and Guirardel (J. of Topology 2010) with respect to complexity and with respect to expressive power. Both papers show that satisfiability is decidable, but neither gave any concrete complexity bound. Our results concern all solutions, and give, in some sense, the "optimal" formal language characterization
Decomposition of Decidable First-Order Logics over Integers and Reals
We tackle the issue of representing infinite sets of real- valued vectors.
This paper introduces an operator for combining integer and real sets. Using
this operator, we decompose three well-known logics extending Presburger with
reals. Our decomposition splits a logic into two parts : one integer, and one
decimal (i.e. on the interval [0,1]). We also give a basis for an
implementation of our representation
CGAAL: Distributed On-The-Fly ATL Model Checker with Heuristics
We present CGAAL, our efficient on-the-fly model checker for alternating-time temporal logic (ATL) on concurrent game structures (CGS). We present how our tool encodes ATL as extended dependency graphs with negation edges, and employs the distributed on-the-fly algorithm by Dalsgaard et al. Our tool offers multiple novel search strategies for the algorithm, including DHS which is inspired by PageRank and uses the in-degree of configurations as an heuristic, IHS which estimates instability of assignment values, and LPS which estimates the distance to a state satisfying the constituent property using linear programming. CGS are input using our modeling language LCGS, where composition and synchronisation are easily described. We prove the correctness of our encoding, and our experiments show that our tool CGAAL is often one to three orders of magnitude faster than the popular tool PRISM-games on case-studies from PRISM’s documentation and among case-studies we have developed. In our evaluation we also compare and evaluate our search strategies, and find that our custom search strategies are often significantly faster than the usual breadth-first and depth-first search strategies.We present CGAAL, our efficient on-the-fly model checker for alternating-time temporal logic (ATL) on concurrent game structures (CGS). Timed Automata May Cause Some Troubles
Timed automata are a widely studied model. Its decidability has been proved using the so-called region automaton construction. This construction provides a correct abstraction for the behaviours of timed automata, but it does not support a natural implementation and, in practice, algorithms based on the notion of zones are implemented using adapted data structures like DBMs. When we focus on forward analysis algorithms, the exact computation of all the successors of the initial configurations does not always terminate. Thus, some abstractions are often used to ensure termination, among which, a widening operator on zones. In this paper, we study in details this widening operator and the forward analysis algorithm that uses it. This algorithm is most used and implemented in tools like Kronos and Uppaal. One of our main results is that it is hopeless to find a forward analysis algorithm, that uses such a widening operator, and which is correct. This goes really against what one could think. We then study in details this algorithm in the more general framework of updatable timed automata, a model which has been introduced as a natural syntactic extension of classical timed automata. We describe subclasses of this model for which a correct widening operator can be found
A unified view of parameterized verification of abstract models of broadcast communication
We give a unified view of different parameterized models of concurrent and distributed systems with broadcast communication based on transition systems. Based on the resulting formal models, we discuss related verification methods and tools based on abstractions and symbolic state exploration
