    AliEnFS - a Linux File System for the AliEn Grid Services

    Among the services offered by the AliEn (ALICE Environment http://alien.cern.ch) Grid framework there is a virtual file catalogue to allow transparent access to distributed data-sets using various file transfer protocols. alienfsalienfs (AliEn File System) integrates the AliEn file catalogue as a new file system type into the Linux kernel using LUFS, a hybrid user space file system framework (Open Source http://lufs.sourceforge.net). LUFS uses a special kernel interface level called VFS (Virtual File System Switch) to communicate via a generalised file system interface to the AliEn file system daemon. The AliEn framework is used for authentication, catalogue browsing, file registration and read/write transfer operations. A C++ API implements the generic file system operations. The goal of AliEnFS is to allow users easy interactive access to a worldwide distributed virtual file system using familiar shell commands (f.e. cp,ls,rm ...)     Police SWAT teams and Military Special Forces face mounting pressure and challenges from adversaries that can only be resolved by way of ever more sophisticated inputs into tactical operations. Lethal Autonomy provides constrained military/security forces with a viable option, but only if implementation has got proper empirically supported foundations. Autonomous weapon systems can be designed and developed to conduct ground, air and naval operations. This monograph offers some insights into the challenges of developing legal, reliable and ethical forms of autonomous weapons, that address the gap between Police or Law Enforcement and Military operations that is growing exponentially small. National adversaries are today in many instances hybrid threats, that manifest criminal and military traits, these often require deployment of hybrid-capability autonomous weapons imbued with the capability to taken on both Military and/or Security objectives.     Improving Automated Layout Techniques for the Production of Schematic Diagrams

    This thesis explores techniques for the automated production of schematic diagrams, in particular those in the style of metro maps. Metro map style schematics are used across the world, typically to depict public transport networks, and therefore benefit from an innate level of user familiarity not found with most other data visualisation styles. Currently, this style of schematic is used infrequently due to the difficulties involved with creating an effective layout – there are no software tools to aid with the positioning of nodes and other features, resulting in schematics being produced by hand at great expense of time and effort. Automated schematic layout has been an active area of research for the past decade, and part of our work extends upon an effective current technique – multi-criteria hill climbing. We have implemented additional layout criteria and clustering techniques, as well as performance optimisations to improve the final results. Additionally, we ran a series of layouts whilst varying algorithm parameters in an attempt to identify patterns specific to map characteristics. This layout algorithm has been implemented into a custom-written piece of software running on the Android operating system. The software is targeted at tablet devices, using their touch-sensitive screens with a gesture recognition system to allow users to construct complex schematics using sequences of simple gestures. Following on from this, we present our work on a modified force-directed layout method capable of producing fast, high-quality, angular schematic layouts. Our method produces superior results to the previous octilinear force-directed layout method, and is capable of producing results comparable to many of the much slower current approaches. Using our force-directed layout method we then implemented a novel mental map preservation technique which aims to preserve node proximity relations during optimisation; we believe this approach provides a number of benefits over the the more common method of preserving absolute node positions. Finally, we performed a user study on our method to test the effect of varying levels of mental map preservation on diagram comprehension

    Task-based Adaptation of Graphical Content in Smart Visual Interfaces

    To be effective visual representations must be adapted to their respective context of use, especially in so-called Smart Visual Interfaces striving to present specifically those information required for the task at hand. This thesis proposes a generic approach that facilitate the automatic generation of task-specific visual representations from suitable task descriptions. It is discussed how the approach is applied to four principal content types raster images, 2D vector and 3D graphics as well as data visualizations, and how existing display techniques can be integrated into the approach.Effektive visuelle Repräsentationen müssen an den jeweiligen Nutzungskontext angepasst sein, insbesondere in sog.     Very Large Scale Integration (VLSI) deals with systems complexity rather than transistor size or circuit performance. VLSI design methodology is supported by Computer Aided Design (CAD) and Design Automation (DA) tools, which help VLSI designers to implement more complex and guaranteed designs. The increasing growth in VLSI complexity dictates a hierarchical design approach and the need for hardware DA tools.     Challenges in flexible microsystem manufacturing : fabrication, robotic assembly, control, and packaging.

    Microsystems have been investigated with renewed interest for the last three decades because of the emerging development of microelectromechanical system (MEMS) technology and the advancement of nanotechnology. The applications of microrobots and distributed sensors have the potential to revolutionize micro and nano manufacturing and have other important health applications for drug delivery and minimal invasive surgery. A class of microrobots studied in this thesis, such as the Solid Articulated Four Axis Microrobot (sAFAM) are driven by MEMS actuators, transmissions, and end-effectors realized by 3-Dimensional MEMS assembly. Another class of microrobots studied here, like those competing in the annual IEEE Mobile Microrobot Challenge event (MMC) are untethered and driven by external fields, such as magnetic fields generated by a focused permanent magnet. A third class of microsystems studied in this thesis includes distributed MEMS pressure sensors for robotic skin applications that are manufactured in the cleanroom and packaged in our lab. In this thesis, we discuss typical challenges associated with the fabrication, robotic assembly and packaging of these microsystems. For sAFAM we discuss challenges arising from pick and place manipulation under microscopic closed-loop control, as well as bonding and attachment of silicon MEMS microparts. For MMC, we discuss challenges arising from cooperative manipulation of microparts that advance the capabilities of magnetic micro-agents. Custom microrobotic hardware configured and demonstrated during this research (such as the NeXus microassembly station) include micro-positioners, microscopes, and controllers driven via LabVIEW. Finally, we also discuss challenges arising in distributed sensor manufacturing. We describe sensor fabrication steps using clean-room techniques on Kapton flexible substrates, and present results of lamination, interconnection and testing of such sensors are presented

    An Android-based personalized public transportation advisor

    This work presents the development of a mobile application which allows the user to access real time data related with public transportation information. This application combines the geographic user context and preferences with the data provided by a public transportation information system, fulfilling the necessities of today’s passengers and providing an incentive for the population to use the public transportation infrastructure. The proposed application, still in prototype stage, allows the user to benefit from real time access to public transportation data in a simple and intuitive form.
