Supporting professional learning in a massive open online course
Professional learning, combining formal and on the job learning, is important for the development and maintenance of expertise in the modern workplace. To integrate formal and informal learning, professionals have to have good self-regulatory ability. Formal learning opportunities are opening up through massive open online courses (MOOCs), providing free and flexible access to formal education for millions of learners worldwide. MOOCs present a potentially useful mechanism for supporting and enabling professional learning, allowing opportunities to link formal and informal learning. However, there is limited understanding of their effectiveness as professional learning environments. Using self-regulated learning as a theoretical base, this study investigated the learning behaviours of health professionals within Fundamentals of Clinical Trials, a MOOC offered by edX. Thirty-five semi-structured interviews were conducted and analysed to explore how the design of this MOOC supported professional learning to occur. The study highlights a mismatch between learning intentions and learning behaviour of professional learners in this course. While the learners are motivated to participate by specific role challenges, their learning effort is ultimately focused on completing course tasks and assignments. The study found little evidence of professional learners routinely relating the course content to their job role or work tasks, and little impact of the course on practice. This study adds to the overall understanding of learning in MOOCs and provides additional empirical data to a nascent research field. The findings provide an insight into how professional learning could be integrated with formal, online learning
Ethical perspectives on advances in biogerontology
Worldwide populations are aging with economic development as a result of public health initiatives and advances in therapeutic discoveries. Since 1850, life expectancy has advanced by 1 year for every four. Accompanying this change is the rapid development of anti‐aging science. There are three schools of thought in the field of aging science. One perspective is the life course approach, which considers that aging is a good and natural process to be embraced as a necessary and positive aspect of life, where the aim is to improve the quality of existing lifespan and “compress” morbidity. Another view is that aging is undesirable, and that rejuvenation and indeed immortality are possible since the biological basis of aging is understood, and therefore, strategies are possible for engineering negligible senescence. Finally, a hybrid approach is that life span can be extended by anti‐aging medicines but with uncertain effects on health. While these advances offer much promise, the ethical perspectives are seldom discussed in cross‐disciplinary settings. Improved Network Performance via Antagonism: From Synthetic Rescues to Multi-drug Combinations
Recent research shows that a faulty or sub-optimally operating metabolic
network can often be rescued by the targeted removal of enzyme-coding
genes--the exact opposite of what traditional gene therapy would suggest.
Predictions go as far as to assert that certain gene knockouts can restore the
growth of otherwise nonviable gene-deficient cells. Many questions follow from
this discovery: What are the underlying mechanisms? How generalizable is this
effect? What are the potential applications? Here, I will approach these
questions from the perspective of compensatory perturbations on networks.
Relations will be drawn between such synthetic rescues and naturally occurring
cascades of reaction inactivation, as well as their analogues in physical and
other biological networks. I will specially discuss how rescue interactions can
lead to the rational design of antagonistic drug combinations that select
against resistance and how they can illuminate medical research on cancer,
