Eine neue, kopflose Gewalt hat den Imperialismus vergangener Zeiten abgelöst. Die neue Weltordnung, das »Empire«, überschreitet alle Grenzen unserer althergebrachten politischen Begriffe – Staat und Gesellschaft, Krieg und Frieden, Kontrolle und Freiheit. Das dezentralisierte und deterritorialisierte Empire beherrscht uns, indem es durch die Medien, die Technik und durch soziale Praktiken unmittelbaren Einfluss auf uns Menschen nimmt. Architektur und Raumplanung haben sich in den letzten Jahrzehnten radikal gewandelt. Die alten, modernistischen Bestrebungen nach erschwinglichen Wohnungen und einer rationalen Organisation der Städte sind ebenso in den Hintergrund gerückt wie die postmodernen Obsessionen der Kommunikation, der Nutzerbeteiligung und des öffentlichen Raumes. Stattdessen stehen nun ästhetische und entschieden unpolitischere Belange im Vordergrund: Diskussionen zwischen einer kritischen und einer projektiven Praxis, zwischen Blobs und Kisten, zwischen Atmosphäre und Ornament. Doch das ist noch lange nicht das Ende der Geschichte, wie im vorliegenden Band deutlich wird. Die Beiträge des 11. Bauhaus-Kolloquiums umspannen einen Zeitraum, der von der Gründung des Bauhauses in Weimar bis zur globalen Architektur unserer Zeit reicht, und verfolgen dabei die Entwicklung des Empires zurück, um gleichzeitig nach Konsequenzen und Alternativen zu fragen, denen die Architektur sich heute gegenübergestellt sieht

ICS Materials. Towards a re-Interpretation of material qualities through interactive, connected, and smart materials.

The domain of materials for design is changing under the influence of an increased technological advancement, miniaturization and democratization. Materials are becoming connected, augmented, computational, interactive, active, responsive, and dynamic. These are ICS Materials, an acronym that stands for Interactive, Connected and Smart. While labs around the world are experimenting with these new materials, there is the need to reflect on their potentials and impact on design. This paper is a first step in this direction: to interpret and describe the qualities of ICS materials, considering their experiential pattern, their expressive sensorial dimension, and their aesthetic of interaction. Through case studies, we analyse and classify these emerging ICS Materials and identified common characteristics, and challenges, e.g. the ability to change over time or their programmability by the designers and users. On that basis, we argue there is the need to reframe and redesign existing models to describe ICS materials, making their qualities emerge

The Reality of the Imaginary

Schon seit einiger Zeit wird die Architektur durch die neue Realität des Imaginären der digitalen Welt erschüttert. Mit dem digital turn sind wir Zeugen einer zunehmenden Liquidisierung einer Grenze zwischen der digitalen Bilder- und der materiellen Objektwelt. Dennoch, ob Idolatrie oder Ikonophilie, ob Handskizze oder Perspektive, war die Architektur nicht immer schon vom Bild her gedacht? War sie nicht immer schon eine Praxis medialer Grenzüberschreitung? Die Beiträge des Bauhaus-Kolloquiums gehen der Frage nach dem Grenzgängertum der Architektur zwischen Bild und Raum, zwischen Zeichenhaftigkeit und Vergegenständlichung, zwischen Realität und Imaginarität nach.The new digital media technologies have been unsetting architecture for quite some time. Erweiterte Prozessbewertung von Biogasanlagen unter Berücksichtigung organoleptischer Parameter und Erfahrungswissen

Landwirtschaftliche Biogasanlagen leisten mit ca. 9.300 Anlagen und einem Anteil von 5,3% an der Stromerzeugung, einen Beitrag zur Erzeugung Erneuer-barer Energien in Deutschland. Die Optimierung dieser Anlagen fördert die nachhaltige Bereitstellung von Strom, Wärme und BioErdgas. Das Ergebnis dieser Forschungsarbeit ist die Entwicklung eines mehrmethodi-schen Bewertungsansatzes zur Beschreibung der Qualität der Eingangs-substrate als Teil einer ganzheitlichen Prozessoptimierung. Dies gelingt durch die kombinierte Nutzung klassischer Analysesätze, der Nutzung organolepti-scher Parameter – der humansensorischen Sinnenprüfung – und der Integration von prozess- und substratspezifischem Erfahrungswissen. Anhand von halbtechnischen Versuchen werden Korrelationen und Kausalitäten zwi-schen chemisch-physikalischen, biologischen, organoleptischen und erfahrungsbezogenen Parametern erforscht. Die Entwicklung einer Fallbasis mit Hilfe des Fallbasierten Schließens, einer Form Künstlicher Intelligenz, zeigt das Entwicklungs- und Integrationspotenzial der Automatisierung auf, insbesondere auch im Hinblick auf neue Ansätze z.B. Industrie 4.0. Erste Lösungen zur Bewältigung der identifizierten Herausforderungen der mehrmethodischen Prozessbewertung werden vorgestellt. Abschließend wird ein Ausblick auf den weiteren Forschungsbedarf gegeben und die Übertragbarkeit des mehrmethodischen Bewertungsansatzes auf andere Anwendungsfelder z.B. Bioabfallbehandlung, Kläranlagen angeregt.Agricultural biogas plants significantly contribute to the generation of renewable energies in Germany. Approx. 9,300 facilities account 5.3% of the total generated electricity in Germany. Optimization of these biogas plants will undoubtably promote the sustainable provision of electricity, heat and natural gas. This research study developed a multi-methodical assessment approach to de-scribe the quality of input substrates as part of a holistic process optimization. This is achieved by combination of conventional analysis, use of organoleptic parameters, integration of process- as well as substrate-specific experient ba-sed knowledge. Correlations and causalities between chemical-physical, biological, organoleptic and experiential parameters are explored. These inves-tigations based on semi-technical experiments. Using case-based reasoning, a form of artificial intelligence, demonstrates the potential for development and integration of automation. Solving approaches to overcome the challenges of multi-methodical process assessment are presented. Finally, an outlook on further research needs is given. Furthermore, the trans-ferability of the multi-methodical assessment approach to other fields of application like bio-waste treatment or sewage treatment plants, is incited

Building community : design in the organizational mind

However, in business organizations, culture is complex and tacit- richer and deeper than any of its external manifestations, including architecture. To compensate for culture's incoherence, the profession assumes facile access to culture through existing artifacts and spatial usage. I contend this response limits the profession's ability to engage social complexity, imbue architecture with cultural relevancy, and establish competitive advantage. This dissertation aims to provide insights into architectural form and process in relation to organizational culture. Schon contends tacit frames revealed in design activity circumscribe organizational culture. Further, the institutional and cultural status of these frames requires engaging in a collaborative design process. 'Appearances of form' in design activity demonstrate the presence of frames and simultaneously enable speculating about their tacit nature. Similar to the construction of frames, the design of an evolving physical object reveals how prior knowledge is assembled to facilitate sense-making. Design in a social setting- characterized by negotiation, conflict, and agreement- sparks the frame restructuring required to coordinate disparate agendas through organizational learning. Designing within the 'collective memory' and supplemented by the theory of type, design can leverage its potential to enlighten and improve organizational culture. Beginning with what designers share, the practices of Louis Kahn demonstrate cultivating an 'archi-type'- form containing both cultural and architectural knowledge. To imbue each with 'good' form, the architects collaboratively creating organizational space to direct architectural form and redirect cultural action. By seeking shared understanding through form, architectural design stimulates organizational reflection, learning, and agreement. Implanting these virtues occurs by an architectural design process stimulating the emergence of culture though 'bricolage' - the synthesis of current and future concerns with an omnipresent past to guide daily interaction. As form emerges, the architect encourages an organization to reassess the frames circumscribing its cultural activity. Heightening the appreciation and awareness of culture instills communal practices of cooperation, respect, and learning. To achieve such acumen and influence, however, requires 'reframing' our professional agenda to reinvigorate the cultural significance of architecture and the design process.by B. Joseph Press.Ph.D

Fashioning space: transforming the use of textiles and their inherent properties by integrating spatial and garment design practices in space design and fabrication

This thesis aims to transform and extend the use of textile as a construction material in spatial design by integrating garment design practice. It builds on current research which explores how—rather than making new materials—material innovation occurs through transforming ways of material handling; by working with materials’ inherent properties rather than in opposition to them. This thesis speculates about the integration of currently separate disciplinary practices as a strategy for transformation and innovation in textile use, and as a way of knowing and producing knowledge. Therefore, it is important to understand how integrating spatial and garment design practices can extend and transform spatial designers’ use and understanding of the potential of textiles’ and their inherent properties. Furthermore, to consider how integration happens, or can happen, in practice. To answer these questions required an interdisciplinary approach in and of itself. Research ‘through’ practice was a crucial mode of inquiry in this design research: it allowed engagement with tacit and practical/experiential knowledge in addition to the imagining and creating of new realities. The dominant research strategy was an interdisciplinary ‘through’ practice strategy implementing concepts of reflective practice, experiential learning and designers’ ways of knowing into Repko’s (2008) interdisciplinary research framework. In a pilot stage, and then in a design project, this strategy encompassed reflexive design, making and learning activities using virtual and physical materials and models. I intended to reflect on that integration happened in my own reflexive design practice by comparing data generated and collected from my own practice with that collected from other designers’ practices. Hence, a case study strategy of the same project, designed by other designers (design students), augmented and reflected upon this research ‘through’ practice. This case was studied through participant observation and follow-up interviews. By reflecting on resulting interdisciplinary design processes, methods, outcomes and insights, this thesis indicates that achieving integration is not automatic when bringing two disciplinary practices together. Also, that the conditions in which it is achieved are those of being situated in context (e.g. in a design project) and experiential learning (of textile handling) involving interaction with members of the community of practice. Furthermore, experiential learning is shown to be the activating mechanism for achieving integration. This thesis develops a ‘Fashioning Space’ way of thinking as an extended and transformed understanding and use of textile and its potential in spatial design practice. This work prepares the ground for further research into the rich territory of integrated garment and spatial design practices. Furthermore, this thesis demonstrates how design, as a way of thinking through material, can be positioned within the design research context; and how design, as continual cycles of experiential learning and reflection-in-action, can be a strategy to achieve integration of practices
