Acoustic Echo and Noise Cancellation System for Hand-Free Telecommunication using Variable Step Size Algorithms
In this paper, acoustic echo cancellation with doubletalk detection system is implemented for a hand-free telecommunication system using Matlab. Here adaptive noise canceller with blind source separation (ANC-BSS) system is proposed to remove both background noise and far-end speaker echo signal in presence of double-talk. During the absence of double-talk, far-end speaker echo signal is cancelled by adaptive echo canceller. Both adaptive noise canceller and adaptive echo canceller are implemented using LMS, NLMS, VSLMS and VSNLMS algorithms. The normalized cross-correlation method is used for double-talk detection. VSNLMS has shown its superiority over all other algorithms both for double-talk and in absence of double-talk. During the absence of double-talk it shows its superiority in terms of increment in ERLE and decrement in misalignment. In presence of double-talk, it shows improvement in SNR of near-end speaker signal
Emerging applications of integrated optical microcombs for analogue RF and microwave photonic signal processing
We review new applications of integrated microcombs in RF and microwave
photonic systems. We demonstrate a wide range of powerful functions including a
photonic intensity high order and fractional differentiators, optical true time
delays, advanced filters, RF channelizer and other functions, based on a Kerr
optical comb generated by a compact integrated microring resonator, or
microcomb. The microcomb is CMOS compatible and contains a large number of comb
lines, which can serve as a high performance multiwavelength source for the
transversal filter, thus greatly reduce the cost, size, and complexity of the
system. The operation principle of these functions is theoretically analyzed,
and experimental demonstrations are presented.Comment: 16 pages, 8 figures, 136 References. Photonics West 2018 invited

Modelling Methods for the Highly Dispersive Slinky Spring: A Novel Musical Toy
ABSTRACT The 'Slinky' spring is a popular and beloved toy for many children. Like its smaller relatives, used in spring reverberation units, it can produce interesting sonic behaviors. We explore the behavior of the 'Slinky' spring via measurement, and discover that its sonic characteristics are notably different to those of smaller springs. We discuss methods of modeling the behavior of a Slinky via the use of finite-difference techniques and digital waveguides. We then apply these models in different structures to build a number of interesting tools for computer-based music production
Photonic RF and microwave reconfigurable filters and true time delays based on an integrated optical Kerr frequency comb source
We demonstrate advanced transversal radio frequency (RF) and microwave
functions based on a Kerr optical comb source generated by an integrated
micro-ring resonator. We achieve extremely high performance for an optical true
time delay aimed at tunable phased array antenna applications, as well as
reconfigurable microwave photonic filters. Our results agree well with theory.
We show that our true time delay would yield a phased array antenna with
features that include high angular resolution and a wide range of beam steering
angles, while the microwave photonic filters feature high Q factors, wideband
tunability, and highly reconfigurable filtering shapes. These results show that
our approach is a competitive solution to implementing reconfigurable, high
performance and potentially low cost RF and microwaveComment: 15 pages, 11 Figures, 60 Reference
Eigenfilters: A new approach to least-squares FIR filter design and applications including Nyquist filters
A new method of designing linear-phase FIR filters is proposed by minimizing a quadratic measure of the error in the passband and stopband. The method is based on the computation of an eigenvector of an appropriate real, symmetric, and positive-definite matrix. The proposed design procedure is general enough to incorporate both time- and frequency-domain constraints. For example, Nyquist filters can be easily designed using this approach. The design time for the new method is comparable to that of Remez exchange techniques. The passband and stopband errors in the frequency domain can be made equiripple by an iterative process, which involves feeding back the approximation error at each iteration. Several numerical design examples and comparisons to existing methods are presented, which demonstrate the usefulness of the present approach
Generalization of a 3-D resonator model for the simulation of spherical enclosures
A rectangular enclosure has such an even distribution of resonances that it
can be accurately and efficiently modelled using a feedback delay network.
Conversely, a non rectangular shape such as a sphere has a distribution of
resonances that challenges the construction of an efficient model. This work
proposes an extension of the already known feedback delay network structure to
model the resonant properties of a sphere. A specific frequency distribution of
resonances can be approximated, up to a certain frequency, by inserting an
allpass filter of moderate order after each delay line of a feedback delay
network. The structure used for rectangular boxes is therefore augmented with a
set of allpass filters allowing parametric control over the enclosure size and
the boundary properties. This work was motivated by informal listening tests
which have shown that it is possible to identify a basic shape just from the
distribution of its audible resonances.Comment: 39 pages, 16 figures, 6 tables. Accepted for publication in Applied
