    The role of networking in the competitiveness profile of Spanish firms

    Two main forces coincide nowadays in the characterisation of productive systems. On the one hand, the internationalisation of markets and economic activities has resulted in an increasing competition worldwide and a new and more global division of labour. On the other, the greater complexity of technology makes innovation a key factor in manufacturing firms’ competitiveness. Cooperative network relationships seem to be important in both processes. This paper aims to explore this aspect in the competitiveness behaviour of four Spanish manufacturing industries: food, chemicals, electronics and vehicles. Data has been obtained from a survey conducted specifically for this purpose at the firm level. Findings from the empirical analysis, based on the application of the Polytomus Logit Universal Model (PLUM), confirm the positive effects of the ability to network on company performance, particularly, intra-firm cooperation, cooperation between competitors and user-producer relationships.La internacionalización de mercados, de actividades económicas y la creciente competencia global son algunos de los factores que caracterizan los sistemas productivos actuales. A ello se suma una intensa complejidad tecnológica que afecta tanto a productos como a procesos productivos, concediéndole a la innovación un papel clave en la competitividad de las empresas manufactureras. En ambos procesos, las relaciones de cooperación empresarial se erigen como forma organizativa de creciente importancia. En este documento se explora la relación entre cooperación y comportamiento competitivo en cuatro industrias manufactureras: alimentación, química, electrónica y automóviles. La información estadística se ha obtenido a partir de una encuesta realizada a nivel microeconómico y diseñada específicamente con este fin en España. Los resultados que se derivan del análisis empírico, basados en la aplicación de un modelo Logit Universal (PLUM), confirman los efectos positivos de las relaciones cooperativas en los resultados empresariales, concretamente las relaciones intra-empresa, la cooperación entre competidores y las relaciones usuario-proveedor.Co-operation, Networking, Innovation, Competitiveness.

    Industrial restructuring in European Transition Economies and TNC's Investment Motivations

    Using survey evidence the paper characterises TNCs' strategic positioning in central and eastern European economies in terms of the relative status of seven motives for investing and the degree of use of seven sources of technology. As a key theme the ways in which the diverse objectives and technological positioning of TNCs' operations in the transition economies can affect both the initial industrial transformation and further sustained development of such host countries is analysed. The entry of TNCs to the transition economies is found to target the supply of the local markets, using the groups' mature technologies as embodied in established products. However, the presence of various secondary motives and supporting localised technology sources demonstrates the presence of significant evolutionary processes. These may lead to individualised (exportoriented) roles of subsidiaries in transition economies using local technology and creative competences.

    Analysis of Competitive and Cooperative Technology Strategies of Electronics Firms in the Greater China Region

    This paper integrates several theoretical perspectives to discuss the attributes of successful implementing strategic alliances and supply chain management strategies in high-technology industries. A multiple- case study of Taiwanese and Chinese electronics industries is presented to demonstrate how and why different firms apply different technology strategies in alliances and supply chain formations. Due to intense global competition, technological integration, and product life-cycle time compression, Taiwanese and Chinese high-technology firms are suggested to formulate and implement a coherent technology strategy to enhance their global competitiveness. By applying an integrated framework based on major theoretical perspectives studying the formulation and implementation of competitive and cooperative strategies, the results of this multiple-case study concludes that six closely related strategies, i.e., supply chain positioning, operation efficiency, strategic motives, resource complementarity, organizational learning and capabilities, and strategic flexibility, can be employed by business executives in formulating alliances and supply chain strategies. The research findings serve as an illustration of the multi-dimensionality and complexity of alliance strategies. The framework also provides a useful start to better understanding the dynamic nature of formulating competitive and cooperative technology strategies and to facilitate the effective evaluation of the conditions under these strategies might achieve optimal results

    An investigation of key growth industry sectors in Wales using Multi-Sectoral Qualitative Analysis

    This paper examines the problem of key sector identification in regional economies. Whilst the paper questions the desirability of policy focusing on the promotion of key sectors, it suggests that tools are generally underdeveloped to identify these sectors. The paper suggests that multi-sectoral qualitative analysis provides one means of forming conclusions on sector potentials.
