    An identity framework for providing access to FIWARE OAuth 2.0-based services according to the eIDAS European Regulation

    Secure electronic identification (eID) is one of the key enablers of data protection, privacy, and the prevention of online fraud. However, until now, the lack of common legal basis prevented European Member States from recognizing and accepting eIDs issued in the other Member States. The electronic identification and trust services (eIDAS) regulation provides a solution to these issues by ensuring the cross-border mutual recognition of eIDs. FIWARE is a European initiative that provides a rather simple yet powerful set of application programming interfaces (APIs) that ease the development of smart applications in multiple vertical sectors and oriented to the future internet. In this paper, we propose a model that enables the connection of FIWARE OAuth 2.0-based services with the eID authentication provided by eIDAS reference. Thanks to this model, services already connected with an OAuth 2.0 identity provider can be automatically connected with eIDAS nodes for providing eID authentication to European citizens. For validating the proposed model, we have deployed an instance of the FIWARE identity manager connected to the Spanish eIDAS node. Then, we have registered two services, a private videoconferencing system, and a public smart city deployment, and extended their functionalities for enriching the user experience leveraging the eID authentication. We have evaluated the integration of both services in the eIDAS network with real users from seven different countries. We conclude that the proposed model facilitates the integration of generic and FIWARE-based OAuth 2.0 services to the eIDAS infrastructure, making the connection transparent for developers

    Federated identity architecture of the european eID system

    Federated identity management is a method that facilitates management of identity processes and policies among the collaborating entities without a centralized control. Nowadays, there are many federated identity solutions, however, most of them covers different aspects of the identification problem, solving in some cases specific problems. Thus, none of these initiatives has consolidated as a unique solution and surely it will remain like that in a near future. To assist users choosing a possible solution, we analyze different federated identify approaches, showing main features, and making a comparative study among them. The former problem is even worst when multiple organizations or countries already have legacy eID systems, as it is the case of Europe. In this paper, we also present the European eID solution, a purely federated identity system that aims to serve almost 500 million people and that could be extended in midterm also to eID companies. The system is now being deployed at the EU level and we present the basic architecture and evaluate its performance and scalability, showing that the solution is feasible from the point of view of performance while keeping security constrains in mind. The results show a good performance of the solution in local, organizational, and remote environments

    Identity assurance in the UK: technical implementations and legal implications under the eIDAS regulation

    The UK Government has been designing a new Electronic Identity Management (eIDM) system that, once rolled-out, will take over how citizens authenticate against online public services. This system, Gov.UK Verify, has been promoted as a state-of-the-art privacy-preserving system, tailored to meet the requirements of UK citizens and is the first eIDM interoperability in which the government does not act as an identity provider itself, delegating the provision of identity to competing third parties. According to the recently enacted EU eIDAS Regulation, member states can allow their citizens to transact with foreign services by notifying their national eID scheme. Once a scheme is notified, all other member states are obligated to incorporate it into their electronic identification procedures. The UK Government is contemplating at the moment whether it would be beneficial to notify. This article examines Gov.UK Verify 's compliance with the requirements set forth by the Regulation and the impact on privacy and data protection. It then explores potential interoperability issues with other national eID schemes, using the German nPA, an eIDM based on national identity cards, as a reference point. The article highlights areas of attention, should the UK decide to notify Gov.UK Verify. It also contributes to relevant literature of privacy-preserving eID management by offering policy and technical recommendations for compliance with the new Regulation and an evaluation of interoperability under eIDAS between systems of different architecture

    Supporting authorize-then-authenticate for wi-fi access based on an electronic identity infrastructure

    Federated electronic identity systems are increasingly used in commercial and public services to let users share their electronic identities (eIDs) across countries and providers. In Europe, the eIDAS Regulation and its implementation-the eIDAS Network-allowing mutual recognition of citizen’s eIDs in various countries, is now in action. We discuss authorization (before authentication), named also authorize-then-authenticate (AtA), in services exploiting the eIDAS Network. In the eIDAS Network, each European country runs a national eIDAS Node, which transfers in other Member State countries, via the eIDAS protocol, some personal attributes, upon successful authentication of a person in his home country. Service Providers in foreign countries typically use these attributes to implement authorization decisions for the requested service. We present a scenario where AtA is required, namely Wi-Fi access, in which the service provider has to implement access control decisions before the person is authenticated through the eIDAS Network with his/her national eID. The Wi-Fi access service is highly required in public and private places (e.g. shops, hotels, a.s.o.), but its use typically involves users’ registration at service providers and is still subject to security attacks. The eIDAS Network supports different authentication assurance levels, thus it might be exploited for a more secure and widely available Wi-Fi access service to the citizens with no prior registration, by exploiting their national eIDs. We propose first a model that discusses AtA in eIDAS-based services, and we consider different possible implementation choices. We describe next the implementation of AtA in an eIDAS-based Wi-Fi access service leveraging the eIDAS Network and a Zeroshell captive portal supporting the eIDAS protocol. We discuss the problems encountered and the deploy-ment issues that may impact on the service acceptance by the users and its exploitation on large scale

    Electronic identity services as sociotechnical and political-economic constructs

    Electronic identification services (eIDs) have become strategic services in the global governance of online societies. In this article, we argue that eIDs are sociotechnical constructs that also have political-economic dimensions. In the European context, governmental and corporate efforts to develop eIDs are shaped by legal EU frameworks, which are almost exclusively focussed on technical and legal interoperability, such as the European Interoperability Framework (EIF) and the European Interoperability Reference Architecture (EIRA). Public concerns such as privacy, security, user empowerment and control over one’s personal information prompts developers to propose a decentralized, attribute-based system governed on a nonprofit, nonstate basis (DAN-eID). To illustrate our argument, we explore a single emerging eID system (IRMA; acronym for I Reveal My Attributes) that is developing in a national context (The Netherlands). We argue that developing eIDs requires more than engineering ingenuity and legal compliance; as sociotechnical and political-economic constructs, they involve negotiation of conflicting social and political values

    Providing Login and Wi-Fi Access Services With the eIDAS Network: A Practical Approach

    The digital identity (or electronic identity) of a person is about being able to prove upon authentication who one is on the Internet, with a certain level of assurance, such as by means of some attributes obtained from a trustworthy Identity Provider. In Europe, the eIDAS Network allows the citizens to authenticate securely with their national credentials and to provide such personal attributes when getting access to Service Providers in a different European country. Although the eIDAS Network is more and more known, its integration with real operational services is still at an initial phase. This paper presents two eIDAS-enabled services, Login with eIDAS and Wi-Fi access with eIDAS , that we have designed, implemented, deployed, and validated at the Politecnico di Torino in Italy. The validation study involved several undergraduate students, who have run the above services with their authentication credentials and platforms and with minimal indications on their usage. The results indicate that the services were beneficial. Several advantages exist both for the users and for the Service Providers, such as resistance to some security attacks and the possibility to adopt the service without prior user registration ( e.g. for short meetings, or in public places). However, some students expressed doubts about exploiting their national eID for Wi-Fi access, mainly in connection with usability and privacy issues. We discuss also these concerns, along with advantages and disadvantages of the proposed services

    Cybersecurity and Privacy issues are becoming an important barrier for a trusted and dependable global digital society development. Cyber-criminals are continuously shifting their cyber-attacks specially against cyber-physical systems and IoT, since they present additional vulnerabilities due to their constrained capabilities, their unattended nature and the usage of potential untrustworthiness components. Likewise, identity-theft, fraud, personal data leakages, and other related cyber-crimes are continuously evolving, causing important damages and privacy problems for European citizens in both virtual and physical scenarios. In this context, new holistic approaches, methodologies, techniques and tools are needed to cope with those issues, and mitigate cyberattacks, by employing novel cyber-situational awareness frameworks, risk analysis and modeling, threat intelligent systems, cyber-threat information sharing methods, advanced big-data analysis techniques as well as exploiting the benefits from latest technologies such as SDN/NFV and Cloud systems. In addition, novel privacy-preserving techniques, and crypto-privacy mechanisms, identity and eID management systems, trust services, and recommendations are needed to protect citizens’ privacy while keeping usability levels. The European Commission is addressing the challenge through different means, including the Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation program, thereby financing innovative projects that can cope with the increasing cyberthreat landscape. This book introduces several cybersecurity and privacy research challenges and how they are being addressed in the scope of 15 European research projects. Each chapter is dedicated to a different funded European Research project, which aims to cope with digital security and privacy aspects, risks, threats and cybersecurity issues from a different perspective. Each chapter includes the project’s overviews and objectives, the particular challenges they are covering, research achievements on security and privacy, as well as the techniques, outcomes, and evaluations accomplished in the scope of the EU project. The book is the result of a collaborative effort among relative ongoing European Research projects in the field of privacy and security as well as related cybersecurity fields, and it is intended to explain how these projects meet the main cybersecurity and privacy challenges faced in Europe.
