    A global observer for attitude and gyro biases from vector measurements

    We consider the classical problem of estimating the attitude and gyro biases of a rigid body from vector measurements and a triaxial rate gyro. We propose a simple "geometry-free" nonlinear observer with guaranteed uniform global asymptotic convergence and local exponential convergence; the stability analysis, which relies on a strict Lyapunov function, is rather simple. The excellent behavior of the observer is illustrated through a detailed numerical simulation

    Design study for LANDSAT-D attitude control system

    The gimballed Ku-band antenna system for communication with TDRS was studied. By means of an error analysis it was demonstrated that the antenna cannot be open loop pointed to TDRS by an onboard programmer, but that an autotrack system was required. After some tradeoffs, a two-axis, azimuth-elevation type gimbal configuration was recommended for the antenna. It is shown that gimbal lock only occurs when LANDSAT-D is over water where a temporary loss of the communication link to TDRS is of no consequence. A preliminary gimbal control system design is also presented. A digital computer program was written that computes antenna gimbal angle profiles, assesses percent antenna beam interference with the solar array, and determines whether the spacecraft is over land or water, a lighted earth or a dark earth, and whether the spacecraft is in eclipse

    Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS) onboard attitude determination using a Kalman filter

    The Upper Atmospheric Research Satellite (UARS) requires a highly accurate knowledge of its attitude to accomplish its mission. Propagation of the attitude state using gyro measurements is not sufficient to meet the accuracy requirements, and must be supplemented by a observer/compensation process to correct for dynamics and observation anomalies. The process of amending the attitude state utilizes a well known method, the discrete Kalman Filter. This study is a sensitivity analysis of the discrete Kalman Filter as implemented in the UARS Onboard Computer (OBC). The stability of the Kalman Filter used in the normal on-orbit control mode within the OBC, is investigated for the effects of corrupted observations and nonlinear errors. Also, a statistical analysis on the residuals of the Kalman Filter is performed. These analysis is based on simulations using the UARS Dynamics Simulator (UARSDSIM) and compared against attitude requirements as defined by General Electric (GE). An independent verification of expected accuracies is performed using the Attitude Determination Error Analysis System (ADEAS)

    Gradient-like observer design on the Special Euclidean group SE(3) with system outputs on the real projective space

    A nonlinear observer on the Special Euclidean group SE(3)\mathrm{SE(3)} for full pose estimation, that takes the system outputs on the real projective space directly as inputs, is proposed. The observer derivation is based on a recent advanced theory on nonlinear observer design. A key advantage with respect to existing pose observers on SE(3)\mathrm{SE(3)} is that we can now incorporate in a unique observer different types of measurements such as vectorial measurements of known inertial vectors and position measurements of known feature points. The proposed observer is extended allowing for the compensation of unknown constant bias present in the velocity measurements. Rigorous stability analyses are equally provided. Excellent performance of the proposed observers are shown by means of simulations

    A Fault Tolerant System for an Integrated Avionics Sensor Configuration

    An aircraft sensor fault tolerant system methodology for the Transport Systems Research Vehicle in a Microwave Landing System (MLS) environment is described. The fault tolerant system provides reliable estimates in the presence of possible failures both in ground-based navigation aids, and in on-board flight control and inertial sensors. Sensor failures are identified by utilizing the analytic relationships between the various sensors arising from the aircraft point mass equations of motion. The estimation and failure detection performance of the software implementation (called FINDS) of the developed system was analyzed on a nonlinear digital simulation of the research aircraft. Simulation results showing the detection performance of FINDS, using a dual redundant sensor compliment, are presented for bias, hardover, null, ramp, increased noise and scale factor failures. In general, the results show that FINDS can distinguish between normal operating sensor errors and failures while providing an excellent detection speed for bias failures in the MLS, indicated airspeed, attitude and radar altimeter sensors
