    Recent Trends in Communication Networks

    Get PDF
In recent years there has been many developments in communication technology. This has greatly enhanced the computing power of small handheld resource-constrained mobile devices. Different generations of communication technology have evolved. This had led to new research for communication of large volumes of data in different transmission media and the design of different communication protocols. Another direction of research concerns the secure and error-free communication between the sender and receiver despite the risk of the presence of an eavesdropper. For the communication requirement of a huge amount of multimedia streaming data, a lot of research has been carried out in the design of proper overlay networks. The book addresses new research techniques that have evolved to handle these challenges

    Honeypot for Wireless Sensor Networks

People have understood that computer systems need safeguarding and require knowledge of security principles for their protection. While this has led to solutions for system components such as malware-protection, firewalls and intrusion detection systems, the ubiquitous usage of tiny microcomputers appeared at the same time. A new interconnectivity is on the rise in our lives. Things become “smart” and increasingly build new networks of devices. In this context the wireless sensor networks here interact with users and also, vice versa as well; unprivileged users able to interact with the wireless sensor network may harm the privileged user as a result. The problem that needs to be solved consists of possible harm that may be caused by an unprivileged user interacting with the wireless sensor network of a privileged user and may come via an attack vector targeting a vul- nerability that may take as long as it is needed and the detection of such mal-behaviour can only be done if a sensing component is implemented as a kind of tool detecting the status of the attacked wireless sensor network component and monitors this problem happening as an event that needs to be researched further on. Innovation in attack detection comprehension is the key aspect of this work, because it was found to be a set of hitherto not combined aspects, mechanisms, drafts and sketches, lacking a central combined outcome. Therefore the contribution of this thesis consists in a span of topics starting with a summary of attacks, possible countermeasures and a sketch of the outcome to the design and implementation of a viable product, concluding in an outlook at possible further work. The chosen path for the work in this research was experimental prototype construction following an established research method that first highlights the analysis of attack vectors to the system component and then evaluates the possibilities in order to im- prove said method. This led to a concept well known in common large-scale computer science systems, called a honeypot. Its common definitions and setups were analy- sed and the concept translation to the wireless sensor network domain was evaluated. Then the prototype was designed and implemented. This was done by following the ap- proach set by the science of cybersecurity, which states that the results of experiments and prototypes lead to improving knowledge intentionally for re-use

The proliferation of cellular network enabled users through various positioning tools to track locations; location information is being continuously captured from mobile phones, where a prototype is created that enables to detect locations based on using the two invariant models for Global Systems for Mobile (GSM) and Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS). The smartphone application on an Android platform applies the location-sensing run as a background process, and the localization method is based on cell phones. The proposed application is associated with remote server and used to track a smartphone without permissions and Internet. Mobile stores data location information in the database (SQLite) and then transfers it into location API to obtain locations’ result implemented in Google Maps. Track a smartphone with fixed identifiers mostly SSN (SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) Serial Number) and IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) derived from an identifying string unique to the user’s device. The location result is moderately correct according to the cellular networks GSM and UMTS, which are used for obtaining location information

Odstraňuje nejednoznačnost z modelu hrozby a zároveň poskytuje plán implementace. ObhájenoThe thesis provides an analysis and adaptation of appropriate security methods from the software domain into the FPGA world and combines them with formal verification methods and machine learning techniques. The deployment of appropriate defense mechanisms requires intelligence about the threat agents, especially their motivation and capabilities. FPGA based designs are, like any other IT system, exposed to different threat agents throughout the systems lifetime, urging the need for a suitable and adaptable security strategy. The systematic analysis of the design, based on the STRIDE concept, provides valuable insight into the threats and the mandated counter mechanisms. Minimizing the attack surface is one essential step to create a resilient design. Conventional access control paradigms can model access control rules in FPGA designs and thereby restrict the exposure of sensitive elements to untrustworthy ones. A method to formalize the FPGA security challenge is presented. FPGASECML is a domain-specific language, suitable for dataflow-centric threat modeling as well as the formal definition of an enforceable security policy. The formal description of the FPGA architecture and the security policy promotes a precise definition of the assets and their possible, allowed, and prohibited interactions. Formalization removes ambiguity from the threat model while providing a blueprint for the implementation. Model transformations allow the application of dedicated and proven tools to answer specific questions while minimizing the workload for the user. Model-checking can be applied to verify if, and to a certain degree when, a design complies with the stated security policy. Transferring the architecture into a suitable model and the security policy into verifiable logic properties can be, as demonstrated in the thesis, automated, simplifying the process and mitigating one source of error. Reinforcement learning, a machine learning method, can identify potential weaknesses and the steps an attacker may take to exploit them. The approach presented uses a Markov Decision Process in combination with a Qlearning algorithm

Our society has developed into a networked information society, in which all aspects of human life are interconnected via the Internet — the backbone through which a significant part of communications traffic is routed. This makes the Internet arguably the most important piece of critical infrastructure in the world. Securing Internet communications for everyone using it is extremely important, as the continuing growth of the networked information society relies upon fast, reliable and secure communications. A prominent threat to the security and privacy of Internet users is mass surveillance of Internet communications. The methods and tools used to implement mass surveillance capabilities on the Internet pose a danger to the security of all communications, not just the intended targets. When we continue to further build the networked information upon the unreliable foundation of the Internet we encounter increasingly complex problems, which are the main focus of this dissertation. As the reliance on communication technology grows in a society, so does the importance of information security. At this stage, information security issues become separated from the purely technological domain and begin to affect everyone in society. The approach taken in this thesis is therefore both technical and socio-technical. The research presented in this PhD thesis builds security in to the networked information society and provides parameters for further development of a safe and secure networked information society. This is achieved by proposing improvements on a multitude of layers. In the technical domain we present an efficient design flow for secure embedded devices that use cryptographic primitives in a resource-constrained environment, examine and analyze threats to biometric passport and electronic voting systems, observe techniques used to conduct mass Internet surveillance, and analyze the security of Finnish web user passwords. In the socio-technical domain we examine surveillance and how it affects the citizens of a networked information society, study methods for delivering efficient security education, examine what is essential security knowledge for citizens, advocate mastery over surveillance data by the targeted citizens in the networked information society, and examine the concept of forced trust that permeates all topics examined in this work.Yhteiskunta, jossa elämme, on muovautunut teknologian kehityksen myötä todelliseksi tietoyhteiskunnaksi. Työn tavoitteena on osaltaan mahdollistaa entistä turvallisemman verkottuneen tietoyhteiskunnan rakentaminen tulevaisuudessa. Teknisestä näkökulmasta työssä esitetään suunnitteluvuo kryptografisia primitiivejä tehokkaasti hyödyntäville rajallisen laskentatehon sulautetuviiille järjestelmille, analysoidaan biometrisiin passeihin, kansainväliseen passijärjestelmään, sekä sähköiseen äänestykseen kohdistuvia uhkia, tarkastellaan joukkovalvontaan käytettyjen tekniikoiden toimintaperiaatteita ja niiden aiheuttamia uhkia, sekä tutkitaan suomalaisten Internet-käyttäjien salasanatottumuksia verkkosovelluksissa. Teknis-yhteiskunnallisesta näkökulmasta työssä tarkastellaan valvonnan teoriaa ja perehdytään siihen, miten valvonta vaikuttaa verkottuneen tietoyhteiskunnan kansalaisiin. Lisäksi kehitetään menetelmiä parempaan tietoturvaopetukseen kaikilla koulutusasteilla, määritellään keskeiset tietoturvatietouden käsitteet, tarkastellaan mahdollisuutta soveltaa tiedon herruuden periaatetta verkottuneen tietoyhteiskunnan kansalaisistaan keräämän tiedon hallintaan ja käyttöön, sekä tutkitaan luottamuksen merkitystä yhteiskunnan ydintoimintojen turvallisuudelle ja toiminnalle, keskittyen erityisesti pakotetun luottamuksen vaikutuksiin

Attacking GSM networks as a script kiddie using commodity hardware and software

    No full text
With the emergence of widely available hardware and software tools for GSM hacking, the security of cellular networks is threatened even by script kiddies. In this paper we present four different attacks in GSM networks, using commodity hardware as well as open source and freely available software tools. All attacks are performed using a common DVB-T TV tuner, which is used as a sniffer for the GSM radio interface, as well as an Arduino combined with a GSM shield that is used as a software programmable mobile phone. The attacks target both mobile users and the network, ranging from sniffing the signaling traffic to tracking and performing denial of service to the subscribers. Despite the script kiddie style of the attacks, their consequences are critical and threaten the normal operation of the cellular networks. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2015
