Development and Performance Evaluation of a Connected Vehicle Application Development Platform (CVDeP)
Connected vehicle (CV) application developers need a development platform to build,
test and debug real-world CV applications, such as safety, mobility, and environmental
applications, in edge-centric cyber-physical systems. Our study objective is to develop
and evaluate a scalable and secure CV application development platform (CVDeP)
that enables application developers to build, test and debug CV applications in realtime.
CVDeP ensures that the functional requirements of the CV applications meet the
corresponding requirements imposed by the specific applications. We evaluated the
efficacy of CVDeP using two CV applications (one safety and one mobility application)
and validated them through a field experiment at the Clemson University Connected
Vehicle Testbed (CU-CVT). Analyses prove the efficacy of CVDeP, which satisfies the
functional requirements (i.e., latency and throughput) of a CV application while
maintaining scalability and security of the platform and applications
Gender Differences in Equity Crowdfunding
Online peer-to-peer investment platforms are increasingly popular venues for entrepreneurs and investors to engage in financial transactions without the involvement of banks and loan managers. Despite their purported transparency and lack of bias, it is unclear whether social inequalities present in traditional capital markets transfer to these platforms as well, impeding their hoped revolutionary potential. In this paper we analyze nearly four years' worth of data from one of the leading UK-based equity crowdfunding platforms. Specifically, we investigate gender-related differences in patterns of entrepreneurship, investment, and success. In agreement with offline trends, men have more activity on the platform. Yet, women entrepreneurs benefit of higher success rates in fund-raising, a finding that mimics trends seen on some rewards-based crowdfunding platforms. Surprisingly, we also find that female investors tend to choose campaigns that have lower success rates. Our findings contribute to a better understanding of gender-related discrepancies in success on the online capital market and point to differences in activity that are key factors in the apparent patterns of gender inequality
Immunochromatographic diagnostic test analysis using Google Glass.
We demonstrate a Google Glass-based rapid diagnostic test (RDT) reader platform capable of qualitative and quantitative measurements of various lateral flow immunochromatographic assays and similar biomedical diagnostics tests. Using a custom-written Glass application and without any external hardware attachments, one or more RDTs labeled with Quick Response (QR) code identifiers are simultaneously imaged using the built-in camera of the Google Glass that is based on a hands-free and voice-controlled interface and digitally transmitted to a server for digital processing. The acquired JPEG images are automatically processed to locate all the RDTs and, for each RDT, to produce a quantitative diagnostic result, which is returned to the Google Glass (i.e., the user) and also stored on a central server along with the RDT image, QR code, and other related information (e.g., demographic data). The same server also provides a dynamic spatiotemporal map and real-time statistics for uploaded RDT results accessible through Internet browsers. We tested this Google Glass-based diagnostic platform using qualitative (i.e., yes/no) human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and quantitative prostate-specific antigen (PSA) tests. For the quantitative RDTs, we measured activated tests at various concentrations ranging from 0 to 200 ng/mL for free and total PSA. This wearable RDT reader platform running on Google Glass combines a hands-free sensing and image capture interface with powerful servers running our custom image processing codes, and it can be quite useful for real-time spatiotemporal tracking of various diseases and personal medical conditions, providing a valuable tool for epidemiology and mobile health
Building the Brazilian Academic Genealogy Tree
Along the history, many researchers provided remarkable contributions to
science, not only advancing knowledge but also in terms of mentoring new
scientists. Currently, identifying and studying the formation of researchers
over the years is a challenging task as current repositories of theses and
dissertations are cataloged in a decentralized way through many local digital
libraries. Following our previous work in which we created and analyzed a large
collection of genealogy trees extracted from NDLTD, in this paper we focus our
attention on building such trees for the Brazilian research community. For
this, we use data from the Lattes Platform, an internationally renowned
initiative from CNPq, the Brazilian National Council for Scientific and
Technological Development, for managing information about individual
researchers and research groups in Brazil
Profiling Attitudes for Personalized Information Provision
PAROS is a generic system under design whose goal is to offer personalization, recommendation, and other adaptation services to information providing systems. In its heart lies a rich user model able to capture several diverse aspects of user behavior, interests, preferences, and other attitudes. The user model is instantiated with profiles of users, which are obtained by analyzing and appropriately interpreting potentially arbitrary pieces of user-relevant information coming from diverse sources. These profiles are maintained by the system, updated incrementally as additional data on users becomes available, and used by a variety of information systems to adapt the functionality to the users’ characteristics
