Large-Scale Multi-Antenna Multi-Sine Wireless Power Transfer
Wireless Power Transfer (WPT) is expected to be a technology reshaping the
landscape of low-power applications such as the Internet of Things, Radio
Frequency identification (RFID) networks, etc. Although there has been some
progress towards multi-antenna multi-sine WPT design, the large-scale design of
WPT, reminiscent of massive MIMO in communications, remains an open challenge.
In this paper, we derive efficient multiuser algorithms based on a
generalizable optimization framework, in order to design transmit sinewaves
that maximize the weighted-sum/minimum rectenna output DC voltage. The study
highlights the significant effect of the nonlinearity introduced by the
rectification process on the design of waveforms in multiuser systems.
Interestingly, in the single-user case, the optimal spatial domain beamforming,
obtained prior to the frequency domain power allocation optimization, turns out
to be Maximum Ratio Transmission (MRT). In contrast, in the general weighted
sum criterion maximization problem, the spatial domain beamforming optimization
and the frequency domain power allocation optimization are coupled. Assuming
channel hardening, low-complexity algorithms are proposed based on asymptotic
analysis, to maximize the two criteria. The structure of the asymptotically
optimal spatial domain precoder can be found prior to the optimization. The
performance of the proposed algorithms is evaluated. Numerical results confirm
the inefficiency of the linear model-based design for the single and multi-user
scenarios. It is also shown that as nonlinear model-based designs, the proposed
algorithms can benefit from an increasing number of sinewaves.Comment: Accepted to IEEE Transactions on Signal Processin
Media-Based MIMO: A New Frontier in Wireless Communications
The idea of Media-based Modulation (MBM), is based on embedding information
in the variations of the transmission media (channel state). This is in
contrast to legacy wireless systems where data is embedded in a Radio Frequency
(RF) source prior to the transmit antenna. MBM offers several advantages vs.
legacy systems, including "additivity of information over multiple receive
antennas", and "inherent diversity over a static fading channel". MBM is
particularly suitable for transmitting high data rates using a single transmit
and multiple receive antennas (Single Input-Multiple Output Media-Based
Modulation, or SIMO-MBM). However, complexity issues limit the amount of data
that can be embedded in the channel state using a single transmit unit. To
address this shortcoming, the current article introduces the idea of Layered
Multiple Input-Multiple Output Media-Based Modulation (LMIMO-MBM). Relying on a
layered structure, LMIMO-MBM can significantly reduce both hardware and
algorithmic complexities, as well as the training overhead, vs. SIMO-MBM.
Simulation results show excellent performance in terms of Symbol Error Rate
(SER) vs. Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR). For example, a LMIMO-MBM is
capable of transmitting bits of information per (complex) channel-use,
with SER at dB (or SER
at dB). This performance is achieved using a single transmission
and without adding any redundancy for Forward-Error-Correction (FEC). This
means, in addition to its excellent SER vs. energy/rate performance, MBM
relaxes the need for complex FEC structures, and thereby minimizes the
transmission delay. Overall, LMIMO-MBM provides a promising alternative to MIMO
and Massive MIMO for the realization of 5G wireless networks.Comment: 26 pages, 11 figures, additional examples are given to further

An Optimized and Scalable Eigensolver for Sequences of Eigenvalue Problems
In many scientific applications the solution of non-linear differential
equations are obtained through the set-up and solution of a number of
successive eigenproblems. These eigenproblems can be regarded as a sequence
whenever the solution of one problem fosters the initialization of the next. In
addition, in some eigenproblem sequences there is a connection between the
solutions of adjacent eigenproblems. Whenever it is possible to unravel the
existence of such a connection, the eigenproblem sequence is said to be
correlated. When facing with a sequence of correlated eigenproblems the current
strategy amounts to solving each eigenproblem in isolation. We propose a
alternative approach which exploits such correlation through the use of an
eigensolver based on subspace iteration and accelerated with Chebyshev
polynomials (ChFSI). The resulting eigensolver is optimized by minimizing the
number of matrix-vector multiplications and parallelized using the Elemental
library framework. Numerical results show that ChFSI achieves excellent
scalability and is competitive with current dense linear algebra parallel
eigensolvers.Comment: 23 Pages, 6 figures. First revision of an invited submission to

Multiuser Random Beamforming in Millimetre-Waves Channels
This thesis aims to show that in mmWaves channels, schemes based on randomly-directional beamforming allow to harness both the spatial multiplexing and multi-user diversity characterizing the broadcast channel by using only limited feedback and a simple transmitter architecture. The number of necessary users with respect to the number of transmitting antennas for optimal performances is investigated as well as the fairness issue, for which the use of NOMA is shown to be advantageous w.r.t.
