Introduction: Localized Structures in Dissipative Media: From Optics to Plant Ecology
Localised structures in dissipative appears in various fields of natural
science such as biology, chemistry, plant ecology, optics and laser physics.
The proposed theme issue is to gather specialists from various fields of
non-linear science toward a cross-fertilisation among active areas of research.
This is a cross-disciplinary area of research dominated by the nonlinear optics
due to potential applications for all-optical control of light, optical
storage, and information processing. This theme issue contains contributions
from 18 active groups involved in localized structures field and have all made
significant contributions in recent years.Comment: 14 pages, 0 figure, submitted to Phi. Trasaction Royal Societ
Flame front propagation IV: Random Noise and Pole-Dynamics in Unstable Front Propagation II
The current paper is a corrected version of our previous paper
arXiv:adap-org/9608001. Similarly to previous version we investigate the
problem of flame propagation. This problem is studied as an example of unstable
fronts that wrinkle on many scales. The analytic tool of pole expansion in the
complex plane is employed to address the interaction of the unstable growth
process with random initial conditions and perturbations. We argue that the
effect of random noise is immense and that it can never be neglected in
sufficiently large systems. We present simulations that lead to scaling laws
for the velocity and acceleration of the front as a function of the system size
and the level of noise, and analytic arguments that explain these results in
terms of the noisy pole dynamics. This version corrects some very critical
errors made in arXiv:adap-org/9608001 and makes more detailed description of
excess number of poles in system, number of poles that appear in the system in
unit of time, life time of pole. It allows us to understand more correctly
dependence of the system parameters on noise than in arXiv:adap-org/9608001Comment: 23 pages, 4 figures, revised, version accepted for publication in

Noise reduction in coarse bifurcation analysis of stochastic agent-based models: an example of consumer lock-in
We investigate coarse equilibrium states of a fine-scale, stochastic
agent-based model of consumer lock-in in a duopolistic market. In the model,
agents decide on their next purchase based on a combination of their personal
preference and their neighbours' opinions. For agents with independent
identically-distributed parameters and all-to-all coupling, we derive an
analytic approximate coarse evolution-map for the expected average purchase. We
then study the emergence of coarse fronts when spatial segregation is present
in the relative perceived quality of products. We develop a novel Newton-Krylov
method that is able to compute accurately and efficiently coarse fixed points
when the underlying fine-scale dynamics is stochastic. The main novelty of the
algorithm is in the elimination of the noise that is generated when estimating
Jacobian-vector products using time-integration of perturbed initial
conditions. We present numerical results that demonstrate the convergence
properties of the numerical method, and use the method to show that macroscopic
fronts in this model destabilise at a coarse symmetry-breaking bifurcation.Comment: This version of the manuscript was accepted for publication on SIAD
