Modeling of a Liquid Leaf Target TNSA Experiment using Particle-In-Cell Simulations and Deep Learning
Liquid leaf targets show promise as high repetition rate targets for
laser-based ion acceleration using the Target Normal Sheath Acceleration (TNSA)
mechanism and are currently under development. In this work, we discuss the
effects of different ion species and investigate how they can be leveraged for
use as a possible laser-driven neutron source. To aid in this research, we
develop a surrogate model for liquid leaf target laser-ion acceleration
experiments, based on artificial neural networks. The model is trained using
data from Particle-In-Cell (PIC) simulations. The fast inference speed of our
deep learning model allows us to optimize experimental parameters for maximum
ion energy and laser-energy conversion efficiency. An analysis of parameter
influence on our model output, using Sobol and PAWN indices, provides deeper
insights into the laser-plasma system

The impact of employees' working relations in creating and retaining trust: the case of the Bahrain Olympic Committee
Introduction: This thesis investigates the impact of employees’ working relations in creating, maintaining and retaining trust in the Bahrain Olympic Committee (BOC).
Aim: The main aim of this thesis is to determine how the three groups of Organisational Trust variables, namely Social System Elements (SSE), Factors of Trustworthiness (FoT) and Third-Party Gossip (TPG), affect employees’ Organisational Trust (OTR) in the BOC and promote Organisational Citizenship Behaviour (OCB). To answer this main aim, a conceptual framework was created that focused on exploring the following research aims: (1) the interrelationship between SSE and FoT, (2) the effect of SSE on OTR, (3) the impact of TPG on OTR and (4) the effect of OTR on overall OCB.
Methodology: The study uses a mixed-method case study research style that included in-depth semi-structured interviews with 17 managers, an online questionnaire survey with 320 employees of the BOC and an analysis of the BOC’s Annual Reports from 2015 to 2018.
Results: The qualitative and quantitative findings indicate, firstly, that there is a significant interrelationship between SSE and FoT, establishing that SSE’s perception of organisational justice (OJ), including that FoTs benevolence and integrity as the most important factors in yielding employees’ trust in the BOC. Secondly, it has been established that SSEs have significant direct and indirect effects on OTR. Thirdly, negative and positive TPG concurrently occurred in the BOC and the prevalence of negative TPG poses more impact on OTR. Finally, this study’s findings demonstrated OTR’s effect in generating OCB, including that Civic Virtue was rated as the most preferred of the five OCB themes; this indicates the managers’ and the employees’ strong emotional attachment and support of the activities taking place at the BOC.
Contributions: Overall, this thesis substantially contributes to OTR literature, particularly in the context of the Middle East. It also proposes several insightful recommendations for future research and practical implications for practitioners in the field of Organisational Trust
Investigation of Radar Signal Interaction with Crossflow Turbine for Aviation Application
The increased adoption of wind energy is an important part of the push towards a net zero-emission economy. One obstacle that stands in the way of a higher rate of wind energy adoption is the interference that wind turbines cause to nearby radar installations. Wind turbines negatively affect the performance of nearby radar sites in a variety of different ways. Almost all types of radar are affected in at least one of these ways.In order to understand the degree to which an object such as a wind turbine interacts with radar, it is important to have detailed radar cross section (RCS) data for the object. In this work, a novel, low-cost, scale model radar cross section characterization system is presented with various advantages over traditional designs. This system was used to characterize the RCS of the novel Crossflow wind turbine. Additionally, work has been carried out on the characterization of metamaterial absorber coatings that can be applied to new and existing turbines for the purposes of reducing their radar cross section and the degree to which they cause radar inter-ference. The works presented can be leveraged to reduce concerns around radar interference from wind turbines, as well as to iteratively generate ge-ometries with lower radar cross sections for the aviation and infrastructure sectors, ultimately accelerating the pace of wind energy adoption and the move towards a net zero-emission economy

AN EXAMINATION OF THE SUFFICIENCY OF EMERGENCY PLANNING IN NEW YORK CITY HOSPITALS FOR VULNERABLE POPULATIONS NEEDING COMMUNICATION OR LANGUAGE ASSISTANCE
Background: While all populations are susceptible to certain hazards that may expose their vulnerabilities in a disaster, populations with no or limited English proficiency, sight limitations, and hearing limitations are especially at risk due to communication and language barriers that they consistently experience. Purpose: This study explored the sufficiency of emergency planning that vulnerable populations with communication barriers may receive in a New York City hospital setting. It investigated the emergency plans, procedures, and practices that hospitals have for these specific, at-risk populations. The sufficiency of these were measured in accordance with their ability to meet the appropriate regulatory standards in existence. By collecting demographic information and characteristics about the hospitals participating, this study tested correlations between these variables with the levels of emergency planning these populations are provided with while in these hospitals. Methods: This mixed-methods study attained valuable information on these areas by surveying and interviewing a population of NYC hospital Emergency Preparedness Coordinators (EPC’s), from a sufficient representation of independent and healthcare systems hospitals; publicly and privately owned; located in different NYC boroughs; and with and without Emergency Departments. Findings: The results of this study draw our attention to the disparities in emergency and resiliency planning for these underserved populations with communication barriers through a rigorous analysis of the various levels of pre-planning they are afforded before a disaster strikes in a hospital facility setting. The presence of a vulnerability characteristic, as well as type of vulnerability characteristic, were found to have effects on the level of sufficiency of emergency planning they may receive in hospitals. The qualitative results also provided an overview of the challenges associated with this type of specialized planning, as well as suggested practices to achieve it. Conclusions: The results of this study should have implications for all emergency management personnel in hospital facilities in terms of enhancing their planning to sufficiently address the needs of vulnerable populations in their emergency planning. Future research should seek to evaluate the sufficiency of the rigor and specificity of the requirements set forth by accrediting bodies for addressing the needs of vulnerable populations in emergency planning
