Space-time coding techniques with bit-interleaved coded modulations for MIMO block-fading channels
The space-time bit-interleaved coded modulation (ST-BICM) is an efficient
technique to obtain high diversity and coding gain on a block-fading MIMO
channel. Its maximum-likelihood (ML) performance is computed under ideal
interleaving conditions, which enables a global optimization taking into
account channel coding. Thanks to a diversity upperbound derived from the
Singleton bound, an appropriate choice of the time dimension of the space-time
coding is possible, which maximizes diversity while minimizing complexity.
Based on the analysis, an optimized interleaver and a set of linear precoders,
called dispersive nucleo algebraic (DNA) precoders are proposed. The proposed
precoders have good performance with respect to the state of the art and exist
for any number of transmit antennas and any time dimension. With turbo codes,
they exhibit a frame error rate which does not increase with frame length.Comment: Submitted to IEEE Trans. on Information Theory, Submission: January

How Much Multiuser Diversity is Required for Energy Limited Multiuser Systems?
Multiuser diversity (MUDiv) is one of the central concepts in multiuser (MU)
systems. In particular, MUDiv allows for scheduling among users in order to
eliminate the negative effects of unfavorable channel fading conditions of some
users on the system performance. Scheduling, however, consumes energy (e.g.,
for making users' channel state information available to the scheduler). This
extra usage of energy, which could potentially be used for data transmission,
can be very wasteful, especially if the number of users is large. In this
paper, we answer the question of how much MUDiv is required for energy limited
MU systems. Focusing on uplink MU wireless systems, we develop MU scheduling
algorithms which aim at maximizing the MUDiv gain. Toward this end, we
introduce a new realistic energy model which accounts for scheduling energy and
describes the distribution of the total energy between scheduling and data
transmission stages. Using the fact that such energy distribution can be
controlled by varying the number of active users, we optimize this number by
either (i) minimizing the overall system bit error rate (BER) for a fixed total
energy of all users in the system or (ii) minimizing the total energy of all
users for fixed BER requirements. We find that for a fixed number of available
users, the achievable MUDiv gain can be improved by activating only a subset of
users. Using asymptotic analysis and numerical simulations, we show that our
approach benefits from MUDiv gains higher than that achievable by generic
greedy access algorithm, which is the optimal scheduling method for energy
unlimited systems.Comment: 28 pages, 9 figures, submitted to IEEE Trans. Signal Processing in

Multihop Diversity in Wideband OFDM Systems: The Impact of Spatial Reuse and Frequency Selectivity
The goal of this paper is to establish which practical routing schemes for
wireless networks are most suitable for wideband systems in the power-limited
regime, which is, for example, a practically relevant mode of operation for the
analysis of ultrawideband (UWB) mesh networks. For this purpose, we study the
tradeoff between energy efficiency and spectral efficiency (known as the
power-bandwidth tradeoff) in a wideband linear multihop network in which
transmissions employ orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM)
modulation and are affected by quasi-static, frequency-selective fading.
Considering open-loop (fixed-rate) and closed-loop (rate-adaptive) multihop
relaying techniques, we characterize the impact of routing with spatial reuse
on the statistical properties of the end-to-end conditional mutual information
(conditioned on the specific values of the channel fading parameters and
therefore treated as a random variable) and on the energy and spectral
efficiency measures of the wideband regime. Our analysis particularly deals
with the convergence of these end-to-end performance measures in the case of
large number of hops, i.e., the phenomenon first observed in \cite{Oyman06b}
and named as ``multihop diversity''. Our results demonstrate the realizability
of the multihop diversity advantages in the case of routing with spatial reuse
for wideband OFDM systems under wireless channel effects such as path-loss and
quasi-static frequency-selective multipath fading.Comment: 6 pages, to be published in Proc. 2008 IEEE International Symposium

Precoded Integer-Forcing Universally Achieves the MIMO Capacity to Within a Constant Gap
An open-loop single-user multiple-input multiple-output communication scheme
is considered where a transmitter, equipped with multiple antennas, encodes the
data into independent streams all taken from the same linear code. The coded
streams are then linearly precoded using the encoding matrix of a perfect
linear dispersion space-time code. At the receiver side, integer-forcing
equalization is applied, followed by standard single-stream decoding. It is
shown that this communication architecture achieves the capacity of any
Gaussian multiple-input multiple-output channel up to a gap that depends only
on the number of transmit antennas.Comment: to appear in the IEEE Transactions on Information Theor
Performance of virtual full-duplex relaying on cooperative multi-path relay channels
We consider a cooperative multi-path relay channel (MPRC) where multiple half-duplex relays assist in the packet transmissions from a source to its destination. A virtual full-duplex (FD) relaying scheme is proposed that allows the source to transmit a new packet simultaneously with the selected best relay, with the rest of the relays attempting to decode this new packet. Thus, a new source packet can be served in each time slot, as in FD relay systems. Taking into account the effect of inter-relay interference (IRI) that is caused by simultaneous relay and source transmissions, a Markov chain analytical model is used to characterize the decoding performance at the relays, based on which the overall outage probability of MPRC is obtained in closed-form expressions. The asymptotic performance analysis reveals that in low rate scenarios, a close-to-full diversity order is achieved by the proposed scheme while substantially improving the spectrum efficiency. In high rate scenarios, the decoding performance of relays is limited by IRI and the system outage performance experiences an error floor. Simulation results demonstrate the performance gains of the proposed scheme by comparisons with existing half-duplex and FD relay systems in the literature
