Tuning Windowed Chi-Squared Detectors for Sensor Attacks
A model-based windowed chi-squared procedure is proposed for identifying
falsified sensor measurements. We employ the widely-used static chi-squared and
the dynamic cumulative sum (CUSUM) fault/attack detection procedures as
benchmarks to compare the performance of the windowed chi-squared detector. In
particular, we characterize the state degradation that a class of attacks can
induce to the system while enforcing that the detectors do not raise alarms
(zero-alarm attacks). We quantify the advantage of using dynamic detectors
(windowed chi-squared and CUSUM detectors), which leverages the history of the
state, over a static detector (chi-squared) which uses a single measurement at
a time. Simulations using a chemical reactor are presented to illustrate the
performance of our tools
Efficient diagnosis of multiprocessor systems under probabilistic models
The problem of fault diagnosis in multiprocessor systems is considered under a probabilistic fault model. The focus is on minimizing the number of tests that must be conducted in order to correctly diagnose the state of every processor in the system with high probability. A diagnosis algorithm that can correctly diagnose the state of every processor with probability approaching one in a class of systems performing slightly greater than a linear number of tests is presented. A nearly matching lower bound on the number of tests required to achieve correct diagnosis in arbitrary systems is also proven. Lower and upper bounds on the number of tests required for regular systems are also presented. A class of regular systems which includes hypercubes is shown to be correctly diagnosable with high probability. In all cases, the number of tests required under this probabilistic model is shown to be significantly less than under a bounded-size fault set model. Because the number of tests that must be conducted is a measure of the diagnosis overhead, these results represent a dramatic improvement in the performance of system-level diagnosis techniques
Performance Monitoring of Control Systems using Likelihood Methods
Evaluating deterioration in performance of control systems using closed loop operating data is addressed. A framework is proposed in which acceptable performance is expressed as constraints on the closed loop transfer function impulse response coefficients. Using likelihood methods, a hypothesis test is outlined to determine if control deterioration has occurred. The method is applied to a simulation example as well as data from an operational distillation column, and the results are compared to those obtained using minimum variance estimation approaches
A Tractable Fault Detection and Isolation Approach for Nonlinear Systems with Probabilistic Performance
This article presents a novel perspective along with a scalable methodology
to design a fault detection and isolation (FDI) filter for high dimensional
nonlinear systems. Previous approaches on FDI problems are either confined to
linear systems or they are only applicable to low dimensional dynamics with
specific structures. In contrast, shifting attention from the system dynamics
to the disturbance inputs, we propose a relaxed design perspective to train a
linear residual generator given some statistical information about the
disturbance patterns. That is, we propose an optimization-based approach to
robustify the filter with respect to finitely many signatures of the
nonlinearity. We then invoke recent results in randomized optimization to
provide theoretical guarantees for the performance of the proposed filer.
Finally, motivated by a cyber-physical attack emanating from the
vulnerabilities introduced by the interaction between IT infrastructure and
power system, we deploy the developed theoretical results to detect such an
intrusion before the functionality of the power system is disrupted
Diagnosis of airspeed measurement faults for unmanned aerial vehicles
Airspeed sensor faults are common causes for incidents with unmanned aerial vehicles with pitot tube clogging or icing being the most common causes. Timely diagnosis of such faults or other artifacts in signals from airspeed sensing systems could potentially prevent crashes. This paper employs parameter adaptive estimators to provide analytical redundancies and a dedicated diagnosis scheme is designed. Robustness is investigated on sets of flight data to estimate distributions of test statistics. The result is robust diagnosis with adequate balance between false alarm rate and fault detectability
Performance analysis with network-enhanced complexities: On fading measurements, event-triggered mechanisms, and cyber attacks

For networked systems, especially large-scale systems such as multiagent systems and systems over sensor networks, the complexities are inevitably enhanced in terms of their degrees or intensities because of the usage of the communication networks. Therefore, it would be interesting to (1) examine how this kind of network-enhanced complexities affects the control or filtering performance; and (2) develop some suitable approaches for controller/filter design problems. In this paper, we aim to survey some recent advances on the performance analysis and synthesis with three sorts of fashionable network-enhanced complexities, namely, fading measurements, event-triggered mechanisms, and attack behaviors of adversaries. First, these three kinds of complexities are introduced in detail according to their engineering backgrounds, dynamical characteristic, and modelling techniques. Then, the developments of the performance analysis and synthesis issues for various networked systems are systematically reviewed. Fault detection and prediction with application to rotating machinery
In this thesis, the detection and prediction of faults in rotating machinery is undertaken and presented in two papers. In the first paper, Principal Component Analysis (PCA), a well known data-driven dimension reduction technique, is applied to data for normal operation and four fault conditions from a one-half horsepower centrifugal water pump. Fault isolation in this scheme is done by observing the location of the data points in the Principal Component domain, and the time to failure (TTF) is calculated by applying statistical regression on the resulting PC scores. The application of the proposed scheme demonstrated that PCA was able to detect and isolate all four faults. Additionally, the TTF calculation for the impeller failure was found to yield satisfactory results. On the other hand, in the second paper, the fault detection and failure prediction are done by using a model based approach which utilizes a nonlinear observer consisting of an online approximator in discrete-time (OLAD) and a robust adaptive term. Once a fault has been detected, both the OLAD and the robust adaptive term are initiated and the OLAD then utilizes its update law to learn the unknown dynamics of the encountered fault. While in similar applications it is common to use neural networks to be used for the OLAD, in this paper an Artificial Immune System (AIS) is used for the OLAD. The proposed approach was verified through implementation on data from an axial piston pump. Uncertainty quantification and its properties for hidden Markov models with application to condition based maintenance
Condition-based maintenance (CBM) can be viewed as a transformation of data gathered from a piece of equipment into information about its condition, and further into decisions on what to do with the equipment. Hidden Markov model (HMM) is a useful framework to probabilistically model the condition of complex engineering systems with partial observability of the underlying states. Condition monitoring and prediction of such type of system requires accurate knowledge of HMM that describes the degradation of such a system with data collected from the sensors mounted on it, as well as understanding of the uncertainty of the HMMs identified from the available data. To that end, this thesis proposes a novel HMM estimation scheme based on the principles of Bayes theorem. The newly proposed Bayesian estimation approach for estimating HMM parameters naturally yields information about model parametric uncertainties via posterior distributions of HMM parameters emanating from the estimation process. In addition, a novel condition monitoring scheme based on uncertain
HMMs of the degradation process is proposed and demonstrated on a large dataset obtained from a semiconductor manufacturing facility. Portion of the data was used to build operating mode specific HMMs of machine degradation via the newly proposed Bayesian estimation process, while the remainder of the data was used for monitoring of machine condition using the uncertain degradation HMMs yielded by Bayesian estimation. Comparison with a traditional signature-based statistical monitoring method showed that the newly proposed approach effectively utilizes the fact that its parameters are uncertain themselves, leading to orders of magnitude fewer false alarms. This methodology is further extended to address the practical issue that maintenance interventions are usually imperfect. We propose both a novel non-ergodic and non-homogeneous HMM that assumes imperfect maintenances and a novel process monitoring method capable of monitoring the hidden states considering model uncertainty. Significant improvement in both the log-likelihood of estimated HMM parameters and monitoring performance were observed, compared to those obtained using degradation HMMs that always assumed perfect maintenance.
Finally, behavior of the posterior distribution of parameters of unidirectional non- ergodic HMMs modeling in this thesis for degradation was theoretically analyzed in terms of their evolution as more data become available in the estimation process. The convergence problem is formulated as a Bernstein-von Mises theorem (BvMT), and under certain regularity conditions, the sequence of posterior distributions is proven to converge to a Gaussian distribution with variance matrix being the inverse of the Fisher information matrix. An example of a unidirectional HMM is presented for which the regularity conditions are verified, and illustrations of expected theoretical results are given using simulation. The understanding of such convergence of posterior distributions
enables one to determine when Bayesian estimation of degradation HMMs is justified and converges toward true model parameters, as well as how much data one then needs to achieve desired accuracy of the resulting model.
